Marth only needs a little help on the original Famicom one, he's borderline Broken there. Super Famicom Marth is still pretty good, but now is easily overshadowed by other units like Sirius and Palla. Shadow Dragon is where he's at his worst thanks to the game having the weapon triangle and far too many cavaliers with lances (This is also the game where Caeda is at her best, as that amount of cavalier units PLUS her Wing Spear... She's a flying killing machine).

As Sebastian says, it is more a mechanic matter. Marth in SD suffers from the design of the game, or rather, the adaptation of the original game to the new mechanics. In SD, they took the original game and added many things, but that affected some characters, including Marth. With Caeda happens the opposite. The existence of the Wing Spear (a counterpart of the Rapier, but as a Spear), gives her a great advantage although in Stats she is lower than Palla. At the story, either Marth or Caeda are the "best warriors" in the army. Both are good at fighting, yes. But Navarre, for example, is the best swordsman (something common in FE: Navarre, Ayra, Larcei, Shannan, Mareeta, Misha, Rutger, Marisa, even Lon'qu, all have better skill than their game Lords). Marth's great strength is that he is a great leader, able to guide the people of him, make them do their best and give them hope. In fact, he was the tactician of the army. On the other hand, in NM the game is better balanced in this aspect. Stop having so many spears, and Marth is much better But saying that Marth can't do anything without Caeda... Well, it's stupid. If you remove the wing Spear, SD continues the same. Only that instead of Caeda you will use other characters. Even the (stupid) meme "Caeda recruits a half cast" is a lie: she recruits 5 characters of 50+. And even 1 of them is shared with Marth (Lorenz, they both knew him) and another is basically Anna sending her boyfriend to fight. In Retrospective, the most important thing that Caeda did was that she recruited Navarre, the best swordsman of the continent... Well, that, and be Marth's constant support. Because being with her makes him stronger (emotionally speaking). In fact, Caeda didn't even have to be in the war, it was not hers: but she decided to join to be with him (just like she said in her support with Celica) On the other hand, without Marth all of them had died at Medeus' hands. He directed the army, was their leader and who gave them hope... and he was the only one able to defeat Medeus since only he could wield the Falchion. Without his leadership capacity, they could never have reached the end
