Don't forget that a pressure vessel is a Bomb. I moved my Basement Air compressor 26 years old to a isolated location where if it grenades, it does not take out plumbing and water softener. Got some oil inside of the tank as well.

The one you have, and the others are filled with powder, 15 years ago i made one out of an h2o (water) filled stainless steel 2.5 gl model and added shut offs on the air line, it was over date and de-commisioned. It still serves me well today. But you need to consider how much air you can put in it because from one vessel to another (the tire) you can only get out whatever it takes to equalise pressure between the two. Many h2o extinguishers have a device installed that a tire inflator will fit.

I made super soaker water guns out of aluminum fire extinguishers for my nieces and nephews, they loved them. Take the pressure gage off and screw your 1/4 in air nipple into that hole, 1/2 full of water and 150 psi air. Instant favorite uncle, but be prepared for kids in your shop fill'n air and water all day.

You can fill the tank through the extinguisher hose by putting a pressure line at the end and opening the valve as it is filling the tank. Once the tank is full release the handle and detach the compressor hose from the extinguisher hose.

@sixtyfiveford I am a fire extinguisher tech. I maintain fire extinguishers daily and have rebuilt and refilled thousands of them. Great video. Unfortunately the 5# buckeye is a bad pick for this. Just because the downpress lever is so poor compared to other brands. The downpress lever was modified after design to add a struck dimple on top above the pin to increase the throw length of the lever. Before this it regularly did not press the valve pin down far enough for discharge. On top of this the hinge rivet is very poor quality aluminum and will distort after 3 or 4 uses. This increases the height of the fulcrum from the load (valve pin). If a code fire extinguisher is not used it only gets discharged every 6 years for its scheduled maintenance. This allows some companies to make unreliable continuously discharged parts. Your pick, the 5# buckeye is the worst of them in this. If you look at the rivet you will see it is now bowed. You may have made a few volume mistakes. Twice the pressure does not mean twice the volume. You can get from 100 to 200 psi with half the volume. Also a 10# content fire extinguisher can not carry 3x a 5#. But great video man.

Robert maybe you can advise me here... I am planning on doing this, but adding powder inside so we can use it on a theater stage. Do you think it will work? Also how can I empty a new pressurized one safely? I don't want to spray all the chemicals just to empty it.
@205Raven
@205Raven 2 года назад
@@debraquantmeyer7483 the powder you put in it needs to be very fine and dry. Fx don't normally use compessed air. They use argon. Compressed air I am sure can work but oxygen tends ro get powders wet at high pressure. If u put a fill valve in it, just pressurize it the same day you use it. As to the safe powder recovery. We use special hoppers we discarge in. I once had a 50 # denim recovery sack I shot large fire extinguishers in. Denim seems to let the air out but catch powder good. Perhaps an old Jean pant leg with a not. Hope this helps. A disposable BC powered fx may be a better pick. The powder in a bc is just sodium bicarbonate.

You can put a air compressor Chuck on the end of that hose put some Teflon thread tape on it keep it from Lincoln and have a male mail fitting to plug between your air compressor and your fire extinguisher to fill it then you just take the double male fitting off after you fill The fire extinguisher then you have the female fitting on the end of the hose on your fire extinguisher to plug your tire chuck to fill your tire up I have about four of them that I have done that too then a couple of them I made as air tanks and made them into a air gun they shoot 45 caliber slugs rifle barrel that I put on the hose it works good for target shooting I have put a nuff air in it that it will go through a 1/4" seat of plywood

I was going to mess around with an oxygen tank last year but it was still pressurized and the pressures are scary. An empty one though I would just buy a valve amzn.to/2yxdv1N and hook an air line to it. This is assuming yours has the cga540 valve. I would fill it with a male to male adapter. This is how I run my propane air tank.

I am in the process of doing this. I used a schrader valve and the rubber didn't quite fit perfectly, so it's leaking air. Any suggestions? I just put E6000 glue around the spot where the rubber sits on the metal and am hoping that fixes it. Other than the tiny leak it's working and I think it will work at a prop, but I haven't tried adding any "powder" yet. Baking soda as suggested in another comment may work nicely.

I've made a few diff. ones, problem was I only had 125 psi compressors. I have a old stainless water ext., when super soakers got big I turned it into a refillable air & water SUPER soaker, drenched the kids quick, but emptied fast. IF one is going to use an old fire ext, as an air tank and leave it in there trunk, writing on it is no good, paint it another color, no one will bother to read when in a panic.

On the smaller plastic FEs I fill the aluminum tank with water. approximately 3/4 full and then take your rubber tipped blow gun stick it in the nozzle. And then carefully back fill the tank by operating the tank valve and blowgun. I throttle my air pressure to 60#, which is about a good balance for the water/air displacement. you can get a blast of water to about 20' and nocks down a fire impressively.

The larger one you have is an aluminum shell. The smaller one you actually used has a mild steel shell. So I wouldn’t trust the 10lb extinguisher you would like to use, unless you find a steel shell most notable being Ansul, America, or Buckeye brands. Pyrochem is Ansul with a different label.

WARNING! Clamping on fittings or taping in the thread into the tank means you should not go above 80 PSI. You know how many fitting get shot off of hoses? It's not going to pass OSHA regulation for sure. Buy a small compressed air storage tank. Thay are not that expensive and used you can maybe find one for under $20.

I have something for you to try. Pipe thread tape. Wrap it around damaged or dry rotted o-rings. We did it when I used to work at a pool place. PTFE is heat and chemical resistant. The only thing is PTFE doesn't have any spring by itself but putting it over the rubber o-ring. That won't matter. It can also keep o-rings from grabbing and pinching while you are putting things together.

I've got an old stainless steel extinguisher that holds a lot more air. The better choice though would be a 3,000 psi paintball tank with a regulator an hose. Years ago before NOS kits and tanks were so common, we were looking for ways to put NOS on a motorcycle. We took one of those small fire extinguishers and pressure tested it in a tank to see where it would fail. It never did completely fail but it swell up significantly after about 3,180 psi. We then filled one with air at 2,100 to see how well it held up to temp changes. We left it sit in the hot sun one July day and it was fine. The issue we has was that at those pressures the handle was nearly impossible to depress. Also, as an inflator, at those pressures, unregulated the hose would have failed instantly but we knew that and didn't even try it. We ended up machining a custom inner/and outer valve with a regulator and high pressure hose. We could charge nearly as much into a small tank as in a full size bottle at about 1,700 psi. We ran two bottle in two stages. Eventually they outlawed non-certified bottles like those but we did it for about four years back in the 80's. Track techs got a bit nervous when they saw a 1,000 psi max marking on a bottle charged to near double that on the gauge. the way we thought back then was that if it blew, the rider wouldn't feel a thing, at least not for very long anyhow.

The BC rated fire extinguishers are just baking soda. The ABC like this one is also a white powder(2 types of fertilizer) that they dye yellow so you can differentiate them. I did refill one 15+ years ago but any moisture in the air causes the baking soda to clump and not spray nicely. It did work though.

Black Lightning That's a 1/8 inch NPT tank valve. I wouldn't take a chance on one of those because most are made from cheap pot metal, and the threads are not really NPT and will leak air. You will need a "R" bit and a respective tap for it on eBay - POU1/8NPTW/DRILL 1/8" Carbon Steel Pipe Tap R High Speed Drill Bit Set, Series If you go this route - better and more bullet proof is a tubeless tire schraeder valve which is much easier to install. Finally it is best to fill the tank from the hose with a fitting.

Why not just buy a air pump you plug into the cigarette lighter or a self contained one and jump box

How much air pressure do you put in the propane tank?
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 5 лет назад
100-120psi of dry air is what I put in. Propane tanks are pressure tested to around 300psi if I recall. Propane gets to 200psi when the tank is a little over 100F and to 300psi if left in the sun and the tank reaches 140F. There is a blow off valve that will exhaust propane if it reaches these temps/pressures.

theyre rated for more than your compressor and they have a built in relief valve so fill em as much as your shop air will allow

Portable air never lasts long enough. Great idea anyway. Maybe for MC tires.

I just use a smaller scuba tank with but only keep it around 2,000psi. Don’t really like keeping it in 100° temps in the vehicle at 3,000psi

Great project Moe. I was going to try something similar with a small portable green oxygen tank. I figured it had to be able to handle the pressure but I dont have the skills to do it so I tossed it out. LOL. Not to mention all the fittings would have to be changed and retrofitted.

Back in the sixties you could buy a small air tank as an option. Came in an emergency road side kit. When the first spare savers came out they were collapsed and came with a tank to inflate them. Got any scuba friends? Might make a good mini dive tank. 5-10 minutes.

I know you mentioned the lock on air chuck, but what inflator tool with the guage do you use? I've tried a few in the past and none of them have been real accurate.

I finally broke down and bought a commercial Milton one and couldn't be happier: amzn.to/2ZuKvUj . I've used one from Harbor Freight for years but it would always go off on the readings and had other issues.

I worked for a shop a long time ago this guy would have his fire extinguishers serviced every 13 months. When the fire department would come to do the fire inspection, he would tell them the guy can't service the fire extinguishers until next month. He did that every year so he could get one extra month for free.

I worked in a wood shop and we would lock the doors if we saw the Fire Dept doing their yearly rounds to the local shops. Got tickets for having sawdust on the floor of a wood shop(fire hazard)
