*LINKS BELOW will help you skip around and give some details*
This is an extensive tour of world famous The Fire Island Pines and Cherry Grove "gay resort" communities, beaches, and forest. Fire Island is a narrow strip of dunes a few miles south of Long Island NY. 30 miles long, it is less than a half mile across at its widest point with several small summer-only towns and state beaches along it. Filmed July 2015.
I grew up in Sayville, NY which with a rail line from NYC and Sayville Ferry Service is the main connection to The Pines and Cherry Grove. Sayville is relatively accepting with thousands of gays passing through on their way to Fire Island and for decades a famous gay bar (it moved), but for the most part locals avoid "Gay Fire Island". I first went to the Pines when as a teenager i was offered a summer job at The Pines Pantry grocery store. All of us who worked on Fire Island loved it. Entire town in a party atmosphere all the time, and you see what it looks like. Not all the jobs are for unskilled kids, some workers come back year after year.
I live in California now, made this during a visit to NY.
As a dreadlock weirdo, in suburbia i get a lot of funny looks from people. On Fire Island I can get away from the "squares" and relax until people i am in NY to visit get off work. As you can see in the video, this is a beautiful place to walk around. Most vacationers on Fire Island are from NYC, my weird appearance doesn't even register, they're used to much weirder.. Comedy, add that i'm not gay and i'm practically invisible.
People in Sayville tend to view gays as "ok whatever, we really don't care"/ Fire Island has been gay for so long we often forget how hard they had to fight to be there and still often struggle with being hated. Although it is expensive to own here, almost anyone can get to Fire Island. If you can't get there you can at least visit this way... That this kind of Freedom exists, that these folks went from being beaten and arrested at a tiny club in NYC for the right to exist (search Stonewall riots) to this...
The Pines and Cherry Grove are what i call Victory.
Special Thanks to Rich Coyne Fine Carpentry- a few years older than me, growing up in NY we lived across from each other in Sayville. In 1988 Rich was produce manager at The Pines Pantry and helped me get a job there, without him i would never have been to the Pines let alone make this video. He's a trained artist as well as fine carpenter, this is the guy to call for custom work. I put his sign/work in the film, link in list below will take you there. You can find more history and info of Fire Island on the internet, and I can try to answer any other questions in the comments, and if you visit shop at The Pantry! Thanks for taking a look!
1:00 enter Pines Harbor / town center
6:20 Pines Pantry
6:45 Pavillion rebuilding and see wood "silvering"
8:08 walk across Fire Island in 3 minutes
11:00 Ocean view and beach girls
12:00 Pines "town"
13:00 bay side area walk
16:55 looking at Long Island from Fire Island
19:00 walking the "Meat Rack" with a vague route description. This trail is the best way to walk between the Pines and Cherry Grove. It's also a world famous anonymous gay meeting spot. It's a nice walk, and no one will bother you if you are obviously traveling.
30:00 walking west into Cherry Grove
31:30 Belvedere Guest House For Men
33:55 we'll jump over downtown and then reverse course and walk east into Cherry Grove
37:10 selfies rant, part of why i make this video, nearly every video/photo online of the area is a selfie that doesnt show any scenery including when i asked people who went!
39:00 Ocean at the Grove
41:20 looking east at the dunes between Cherry Grove and The Pines
43:05 Poison Ivy PSA
44:00 Cherry Grove from Sunken Forest how to
45:00 Cherry Grove to The Pines route help
45:50 forest to The Pines route finding
51:20 Pines harbor area
57:10 beach and walking around Pines
1:02:40 Rich Coyne's ad sign and info. I ran into him in 2013, but couldn't get him on film this trip he was away...

Truman Capote wrote 'Breakfast at Tiffany's ' in 1955 while staying at the Carrintonton House in Cherry Groves. The house was built around 1912. It's the old weathered building in the dunes just before getting to the Grove.

My first time to FI Pines was in 1983...yeap... 1983...super cheap rent at the time because everyone was scared of AIDS. I rented Egon von Furstenberg house, (Diane Von Furstenberg's husband), his master bedroom had four hooks in the the ceiling beams in a square, and his closet was loaded with whips, harnesses and other leather accessories. At night me and my gang of friends went around to all the walks and changed the names, like Tune Walk we painted it LanaTuna Walk, Shore Walk became DinahShore Walk, we had so much fun the next few days. The Pavilion night club at that time was tiny and made of concrete. Ahhhhhh Memories!

I worked as a nanny (back then called mothers helpers) from 1970-1974 on Fire Island. We lived in ocean bay park (I think that’s the name). Every Wed was my day off and I’d “walk” to the Pines. Went to the Botel every Wed. Partied with some Very Fine guys at the Pines. I am female and was ‘in love’ with Every guy. Gorgeous men.! Back then it smelled of Eau Savage cologne and white musk. Ohhh how I miss those days. Thank you for this video.

For my partner and I, Fire Island has become one of our most beloved places to spend quality time during the summer season. Thank you for sharing this really informative and detailed video. We have enjoyed the paths through the rack....strolling down the walkways in much the same way as you describe them. Everything we learn about the Pines and Cherry Grove serves to enhance our stays.

Hi to you my friend! I went to Fire Island when I was 17 and still had not "come out" yet...though i went with an older gut I had met in a toilet when I was cruising! I'm from Montréal Canada...and as I recall...so much cruising and the people were so friendly! Gotten old now but this still remains in my mind as one of the best summers i ever spent. Wish I could return to see what it looks like now. Your video i enjoy so much! Wish i could get to know you more...Love and hugs to you! michelamgelo from Montréal.

This was by far the very best video I've ever seen of the Cherry Grove and Pines areas of Fire Island! I used to have a week-long timeshare at the Ice Palace hotel before it burned down, (the ruins of which you show at the 34:30 mark) so the past two years have been the first years since 1990 I haven't been on the island. Your video pretty much shows everything, and it's kinda like being able to vacation there again through the magic of video. I had to laugh during the part when you were in the woods between the Pines & Grove because that's exactly how it feels every time I try to go through there too; "which way do I go?" Thanks for explaining why the wooden structures and boardwalk are that silver/gray color there! Through all the years I've been going there no one had explained that before, and I'd just presumed that was the natural color of the wood they were using out there. Only nit-picky thing I would've liked to see would be a bit of the Sunken Forest and Sailor's Haven area too, but I get it that you were only concentrating on the Pines & Grove. It's STILL far and away the greatest Fire Island video I've seen. Thanks again so much!

Hey! I just saw that you ALSO have a Sailor's Haven/Sunken Forrst video on your channel! You're the best, man!
@potatothorn
@potatothorn 8 лет назад
hahahaha !! yeah, i got you covered- this one was particular to the pines-grove community... Sunken Forest deserved it's own film. I just got back from a week over there, I only shot a little more video this time. The Hotel property is up for sale and still empty but the residential home directly across (west) from it is being rebuilt they were test filling the pool/ funny that's the first part they built. Glad you enjoy these vids your comment is exactly why i make the film, to take you back there.

Just a few tips for people who haven't been to the Grove or Pines, and plan to visit. The best time to catch the ferry across Great South Bay is at sunset; the view is extraordinary. If you're traveling between the two communities, and aren't going to the JGMP (Judy Garland Memorial Park), a/k/a the meat rack, for sexual encounters, then walk on the beach. The woods get extremely hot, humid, and buggy, so you're better off hoofing it near the water, on the hard sand. As you can see in the video, the paths in the JGMP are labyrinthine, so why take a chance on getting hopelessly lost, if you're simply traveling east/west, with no intention of a tryst?
@potatothorn
@potatothorn 7 лет назад
good advice about the Ferry at sunset!! i sort of agree about the hard sand near the water, especially at night... but also would say that if you learn the Direct route (its not that hard) the trip through the woods is also nice IF there is a light breeze ... definitely true about the bugs, i bring a lot of spray myself.. I usually do beach one way and woods another way... comedy, as a hippy, i use the woods for something else... people are very cool there. Thanks so much for watching and giving this great comment! also thanks for noting the actual name of the woods i forgot about the Judy Garland name for it

@@richcampbell6808 well as a straight guy all i can say about it is it looks really nice... i believe it is clothing optional and the sort of place where you might meet someone in the bathroom but at the same time very upscale.... beautiful building.... but if you want a more traditional motel the main hotel in town is also recently updated since it was burned by a fire in around 2016. now it is all new... personally having my mom's place across the Bay i only go to fire island on day trips but i know the hotel Ciel or whatever it is called now in the Pines is another good option. Depending on your $$$ once you are there start asking around about what is a "share" for next season / you'll want to go back for longer ! enjoy and let me know how it goes!

I like all the boardwalks. It's too bad we had to build our whole country around cars. Are the stores and bars open in the winter?
@potatothorn
@potatothorn 8 лет назад
+Canyon Overlook no everything is closed from November to April, really the towns are active May to September. Pines and Grove combined have only about 30 year round residents, about 6000 in summer plus day trippers! In the winter there are almost no boats, ferry goes across twice a day on the weekends only, so you could only get over there for 3 hrs unless you have a house.. Basically the only people there in winter are the contractors who run security service for the homes. During the summer there are about 12 boats per day each direction. Comedy, i have a photo of one house with fake palm trees, i call it the $5 million difference. Winter keeps the prices a lot lower than the west coast beach homes.

What an excellent video. Thanks for posting it and doing a great job on the walking tour. I'll be staying in Cherry Grove in July for about 5 nights. So I have a question for you. If I want to go to a party at the Pines and it's about 1am, how do I find my way back to the Grove when it's dark? You seemed to go through a lot of woods so will I get lost or are there some signs? Again potatothorn, great video. The best I have seen so far. You should be a tour guide. I hope you will answer this. Thanks.
@potatothorn
@potatothorn 8 лет назад
+tim02538 Thanks so much this kind of comment is why i made the video so glad you enjoy it.. I would suggest walking through there in daytime first that will help a little. Make sure you start from the main walk in either town, from the Pines it will pretty much be your only option- July, 1am, there will probably be a fair number of people going back and forth through there all night, funny thing is about half the people will also be more or less lost but you'll get there, dont worry..It really isn't that far. You might even find a party going on In the woods, sometimes people bring a sound system out there. There aren't any real signs, but sometimes people put up little ribbons to help you. As long as you head forward you'll be ok. Bring a flashlight and stay on the trails- the trails twist and turn, but you will not need to duck under anything or push through bushes other than those tall reeds at the Grove end. Every time i got off course it was because i thought the trail went through a bush or under a branch/ nope/ stay on the wider trail. Watch from 21:45 to about 23 min- I end up in that open sand area by accident, it doesnt really matter. The dunes will stop you from going towards the ocean, and the thick reeds will keep you from going towards the bay so you just have to know which way you came from and go the other way// The Dead End trails are all much smaller so you can tell them apart. Usually the worst that happens is instead of the nicer trail you might get off course and onto the main sand road which is less fun to walk on, but no big deal. It's only about 20-30 minute walk from downtown Pines to downtown Grove, with most of that being on the boardwalks. Have a great trip and thanks again, let me know if you have other questions. I'll probably make it out there in August this year myself.
@CapeCod69
@CapeCod69 8 лет назад
+potatothorn Thanks a million for the fast response. I will take your advice and try it during the day first. I was just concerned that I would get lost in the dark and fall into the swamp or end up at the meat rack which I guess wouldn't be that bad. LOL I bookmarked your video and will watch it a few times before I go in July. I was out there back in the 70's and you were able to nude sunbath at the beach. I hear the past couple of years it has been outlawed. Is that correct? You're great for responding so fast. Thanks again for the offer to answer any more questions. Have a great day. Tim
@potatothorn
@potatothorn 8 лет назад
tim02538 no problem// im on the internet more often than not and i like spreading good information.. so you know, the woods IS the Meat Rack, you will walk through it..but the "action" is down the dead end trails for the most part. It's not a big deal just people cruising each other on the trail. You wont fall into the swamp as long as you have a light and stay on the trail plus there will be other people going the same way so you can get help finding your way. The Beach is technically Park, every few years the Rangers say in the news they will start ticketing nude bathers but they never do. The Key is just go to the strip of beach in between the two towns, that is the informal nude beach. While i dont go naked, i like that area for swimming because it means i can change out of my bathing suit on the beach no problem hehhe. To get there just go down to the beach and from the Grove head towards the Pines, the nude beach is the section with no houses, very easy to find someone can point you that way easily. If you zoom in on a map, you'll see the two towns and a little blank area between them, that's the nude beach and also where the woods are.

You are just a wealth of information. I love to nude sunbathe so I checked out the area you mentioned and did see it on GoogleMap. Thanks you again a million times. And I wont bring food with me. Instead I will take your advice and shop local. It may be more but I'm sure it's worth it. Tim

tim02538 that is great and thanks the Pines and Grove workers appreciate it, you will find the groceries are very good quality. Pizza is great in both towns, restaurants are excellent but definitely not cheap.

glad you enjoy it!! shot with a sony handycam hdr-cx405 , cheap like $250. most people use gopro because it is smaller and more durable i like a sharper image and zoom myself. sadly this looks a lot better before youtube compresses it but not bad huh// i was just back over there last week only shot a little video but we love Fire Island// hopefully ill be back again next summer

potatothorn I have to get one of those. The resolution and FPS looked great. I have never been to Cherry Grove but it looks like a nice little hideaway. I enjoyed the long boardwalks though the trees. Very relaxing looking. I have only been to Kismet and Ocean Beach. I take my own boat. Can you dock at Cherry Grove on a private boat?
@potatothorn
@potatothorn 8 лет назад
ProPainC63 dock space in the grove and pines are Premium, not sure you could ride up without reservations BUT many people anchor off of sailors haven, in the shallows and swim or raft in.. it's only about half mile walk from there to the Grove. It is a raging Gay Party on the weekends so be prepared for huge crowds at the bars and stuff but during the week it is very quiet... you can get this camera with all kinds of extras for just over $200 now, or get the newer model for around $250... great deal really // glad i could help thanks for the questions - and go over there !!

// Can you dock at Cherry Grove on a private boat?// sorry for the slow reply.. Yes you can, but getting a space may be REALLY tough to do.. HOwever- many people anchor a little ways off shore all around the area, and then raft or even just walk in it is very shallow

I still own property on Ocean Walk (and throughout the Pines), but the great times of the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s into the early 1990s that seemed like they would never end are gone, baby gone! Sadly, the BOBO crowd (Bohemian/Bourgeois) have long left Fire Island long ago, when long term New York natives like me had the pick of the best houses to stay for the season. Now, I own five homes in the Pines (and four in Cherry Grove), but I hardly go back there anymore. In August, 2015, I returned to the Pines for an overnight stay to see the essential Sandra Bernhard perform her 'Blessed' show for one night only at Whyte Hall, and the atmosphere that used to be so guarded and exclusionary now resembled what appeared to be a Moroccan street bazaar on the main boardwalk and harbor. The times they had definitely changed. But, alas, the only permanent thing in life is change-but, I will never forget what idyllic times that I was so fortunate enough to be a part of with each summer season: the friends (old and new), the mix of international types, the mystique, the parties, the decadence (that began so innocently), the egos, the machers, the hoi polloi, the day trippers, the grifters, drifters, tea dances, invasions, persuasions, distractions, attractions, encounters and pretenders, the sound of the ocean from my home in the morning, the brilliant sunsets at close of day, the fashion, the passion, the great food, the attitude, the California dudes, the late night soirees, the fairies, the disco, the bonding, the parting, the returning, and so it goes. . . But, worst of all was when the season ended, and loneliness replaced the island ports of call until the following Spring, when the cycle would begin all over again. But, oh how I miss those friends who've gone to glory, and the ghosts of the Pines and Cherry Grove who live on in purgatory. On a quiet summer evening, I can hear the haunting sounds of their faint laughter, followed by those rattling chains that signal their eternal (and otherworldly) vigilance over their terrain from another time, another place. . .

I wonder if you could just swim across from one side to the other without taking the ferry.
@potatothorn
@potatothorn 6 лет назад
six miles... so you would have to be a pretty strong swimmer... but the currents are not bad and there aren't many sharks.. lots of people take small boats, sailboats, and occasionally in winter people walk across the ice!! (i made it about half way once)... that's dangerous though, most people who walk across get stuck in the dark and have to be rescued by Rangers on fire island to get home

@potatothorn 6 лет назад
thanks! i use a sony handycam, cheaper one hdr cx-405// newer models are even better, and my more recent videos i use a better editor and adjust for exposure some, so even better... i dont visit Fire Island often, but i have a few other videos on here plus some from San Francisco, there's a short update from last summer that is decent... most of my videos are hiking related or my hobbies, but i do put out a Fire Island update every year or so. Probably not till 2019 though, i have other plans this summer.

My last two cameras were Sony Cyber-shots, which lived out their lives. Now I have a Canon PowerShot, which isn't as good as Sony. Two flaws with that: the sound quality is too muffled, and the batteries die down too quickly. I never knew how to add all the videos together like you do making it one long video. If you check out my Playland videos, you'll see what I'm talking about. I narrate the beginning of the video then end it with the final narration. The next camera I get will be a Sony. I'm sticking to them over Canon.

now you can get a "camera" that does video just as well if not better than this... the biggest problem with this camera, it does not take an external mic/// what i advise for anyone making video is make sure the camera accepts an external microphone, then you can get good quality audio recordings... ill take a look at yours and good luck with your next camera!

Limerick Cottage that you acknowledged was the site of a murder in the 1970's/80's. The piano player at former club, The Monster (177 Ocean Walk-which you passed) was bound and gagged to death during kinky sex. They never caught the other party.

sorry i only visit Sayville when i am out there and Davis park can only be reached from a patchougue ferry... maybe some day i take the ferry and then walk to the pines but i just got back from this year's trip/ ill post a short video eventually but i only went from sunken forest to the pines. I have one other video where i hike from ocean beach to the pines, you can see some of the other towns in that one....

Why pay "a few thousand dollars" for a co-op when you could just sleep on the beach and live out of your backpack for a week or two?
@potatothorn
@potatothorn 6 лет назад
that's an option if you know how to avoid the Rangers, Police, and insects but won't work for everyone...However a LOT of people do pull that for one night over the weekend.... you can actually get a wilderness permit and camp legally down the beach aways for practically free though.... but if you have a literal ton of money, why not blow it on a beach house and let people crash.....(another easy way to stay if you are even a little bit good at making friends)
