In this episode, I am changing it up a little and doing some maintenance and modification to our Fireside Outdoor Pop-Up Fire Pit. This is one of our favorite pieces of equipment in our whole camping kit and it gets used quite a bit. So much so, that we have needed to replace the mesh screen.
I also do some light and easy fabrication to allow us to cook better using some cast iron bbq grates that we have in our kit.
Fireside Outdoor is not a sponsor of the channel, we just love and use the product so much that it warranted some love. My hope is that this is helpful to anyone else trying to get more out of their Pop-Up pit. While they do offer a grill/grate option I thought this might be useful for anyone wanting to use something you may already have. If you are in the market for a different option for having responsible and more efficient campfires, consider checking them out here:

Ohhhh, it reminds me of a router sled I made years ago. The tabs were a great idea to get a nice fit without the danger of one end falling off the ledge and causing 'issues'. Smart upgrade my friend!

Thank you! Just tried it out this weekend and it worked beautifully. It'll be in an upcoming video.

Nice upgrade, and I dig the shop/fab video as a compliment to the adventure videos. Two of my favorite RU-vid genres! Now I just need to get the camera out more when I'm in the shop.

Awesome! Glad you liked it. I'll do more shop videos in the future. Turns out you've given me some great ideas on that front. Cheers!

Very cool! I also have that fire pit. The only downside for me and this happened on my last trip out on the deschutes is that so much air come through the bottom that even with a small fire I get nervous. With any wind sparks fly further than expected. I was out for the salmon fly hatch a couple weeks ago and some wind came up. Let’s just say it got my attention! Glad I found your channel! 🤙

Yeah, I totally agree. I had to give up on a small fire that we were having in it the last time we were on the Deschutes for the same reason. Better safe than sorry.

@@prolificnorthwest Mine failed on it's maiden cook this evening lol. I did a clam and shrimp boil and it couldnt hold up to the weight and heat. The front brace warped and bent. It seemed like it would work well with something like a steak but the lowes angle pieces aren't thick enough to support weight. I wouldn't put a dutch oven or a cast iron pan on it.

@@buscampers oh no! We’ve done a cast iron Dutch oven on ours before without any issue. Sorry to hear that it didn’t work.

@@prolificnorthwest I'm going to span it across the bottom of the pit on top of the mesh as support for cast iron pots and pans.

When you get back from a trip, take the mesh out and wash it with dawn and let it dry. Then pack it away without ash on it. The acidic properties of the ash deteriorate the mesh. Doing this will greatly increase the life of the mesh. And just wondering why ya just don’t get the grill kit from fireside? Works great.

Thanks for the tip. I went this route because I had all of these things on hand and rather than spending more money, I thought I’d try this first. Also, I like cooking with cast iron. That’s all.

Fantastic production quality on this, first time watching and was very surprised to see how low your sub count. I hope that many good things come your way brother

Harbor Freight F-Style clamps are the way. They may not be for squaring off cabinets, but they sure as heck hold a guitar neck laminate together just fine.
@prolificnorthwest
@prolificnorthwest Год назад
Yeah, clamps are about the only thing I get from Harbor Freight that I trust. Oh, tarps too!
@richmosley2519
@richmosley2519 Год назад
Yup! Tarps and clamps (just not the trigger-ratchet style, they can't hang with big glue-ups.)

I don’t know the exact number, but probably 80-100. Almost always burning red alder.
