In fairness, this was a natural gas/propane fire on a "couch". It wasn't going to go out, no matter what they did. When the reporter did it, they simply turned the gas off.
Agreed! With what looks to be a 2.5lb dry chemical extinguisher they stood no real chance against a gas fire that large. That said, give me an appropriately sized CO2 or Halon/Halotron extinguisher and that gas fire would be out in 10 seconds tops. Of course the purpose of the exercise should have been to demonstrate proper technique, not extinguish the fire (it's the news network that spins the story making it look like everyone is doing terribly when the gas is never shut off for them)
It is extremely important for all home owners to have and understand how to use, an ABC rated dry chem fire extinguisher. But this training session is completely controlled to make it look like the people were doing it wrong. They were doing it right.
fire doubles in size every 30 second my fire man :P good idea to teach people how to use one although even that news presenter was slightly further away than id be and they obviously turned the gas off for her but not the others
Dry chem extinguishers also suffer from an issue where they propellant sits atop the crusted particulate and sometimes when you pull the pin, you get nothing but the propellant coming out. To prevent that, before you discharge the extinguisher, take it by the neck, and smack it back and forth, striking on the edges of the bottom (not pounding it flat down on the bottom but with a 20-30 degee angle between the bottom and the ground). And hit it pretty darn hard. You need to get any crusted particulates broken up and mixed in with the propellant. The extinguishers can take a brutal pounding so don't worry if you really whack it. Three or four whacks on each side in quick succession, then open your valve and attack the fire. If you forget, you may just be blowing smoke.....
This is fine with decent quality extinguishers that use metal pickup tubes, however, a LOT of the cheaper ones (like the ones they were using in this video) have plastic pickup tubes that can crack / break off if you hit the thing too hard (pathetic I know...)
You should rotate your extinguishers ever 6 months to prevent caking. Turn it upside down, smack the bottom like a ketchup bottle, then let it sit upside down for 24 hours,
I remember I almost had to use one back in November 2017 when the heating element of the oven bursted, though to the luck of my family and I, having the oven door closed drowned out the flame, but the apartment was filled with foggy smoke and the stove had to be entirely replaced.
I call bull on this. Everyone but the lady who was too far away should have easily put most of that fire out. Yet the flames weren't even lightly affected despite the base being hit.
Pull Pin....aim for the base of the fire.... walk closer while sweeping side to side...and when you THINK you have it out, NEVER turn your back and walk away....BACK OUT still facing the fire.
Fake news, lol. You can hear them turn the gas off when the reporter does it. The lady that was “too far away” was actually doing it perfectly, aimed at the base of the fire from 6 feet away
Everyone's talking about how the fire won't go out with the others, but will with the reporter....They're just trying to prove a point and give a proper demonstration with the reporter being the "hero". Yeah, it's lame, but they're just trying to make a story.
and obviously a fire extinguisher is to stop the original flames from spreading, I can't imagine a dumbass thinking he can put out an entire room with a fire extinguisher
C'mon we know they shut the gas off when that woman reporter did the demonstration. That fire went out way too easily compared to the other people's attempts.
It’s not to smart for people to put adds on these types of videos if you don’t know how to use one of these and there’s a 30 second add those few 30 seconds could be fatal
But.. that was a gas burner. Of course it’s not going to go out. And her attempt wasn’t a success either you could literally hear them turning off the gas lmao
Ok, I should have said "even as sarcasm" rather than "even as a joke" so you can understand my point; there **are** people who would not get that you are not talking seriously.
