@@BIGxBOSSxx1 You'd think the people running the show would let them in on that. "Oh, btw usually in games this is like this for x reasons to make it more enjoyable and fun for the player/easier for the player."
Yea, but the stats let alone someone owning those guns is stupid. The volcanic pistol predates alot of the guns in the game but wasnt popular due to it being underpowered, the cattleman is underpowered in the game also. It should be the most powerful handgun of the game with the scholfeild after it, the navy revolver and lemat shoudlnt be as powerful as there are because they took smaller calibers but also took less powder same as the Schofield. The double action should be one of the weakest, so should the pistols
A bit of a shame that The Schofield wasn't covered. Not only is it my favourite of the RDR2 revolvers, it also keeps it's real name for a pretty dark reason. The reason that there's no licensing problem, is because the Schofield who invented it, shot himself with the gun that shared his name.
I know this is a 2 year old comment and I'll look it up myself as well, but why would that allow the name to be used without licensing? Did he die before he could patent it? Or some other reason? I'll update this comment with what I find :) Update: I couldn't find much info, but to reiterate and expand on OPs comment a bit, the Schofield Revolver was named after Major George Schofield who modified the Smith and Wesson Model 3 to be easier to reload while on horseback, cutting reload time in half (around 30 seconds to fully reload the Schofield variant). It became popular enough amongst the cavalry that Smith and Wesson patented the modified design, naming it after the Major. Compared to the Colt 45 it had a bit less power and recoil that made it easier to shoot accurately, but still kept it's stopping power. Eventually it was standardized to accept .45 Schofield and .45 Colt rounds interchangeably. Major Scholfield did indeed commit suicide with a Schofield in his full military gear in 1882, 3 years after his wife died and 9 years after the Schofield Revolver was patented. I couldn't find anything about why R* can use some names like the Schofield, Volcanic, and (I believe) the Rolling Block Rifle, but if I had to guess I'd think it comes down to either: the real names they use are public domain or they only paid for the licensing for those specific guns for whatever reason. "Gun lore" is kinda interesting sometimes I suppose
I wrote a book on claiming writing the book on something having no value. Because in the last ten years there are now more books published per year than there are humans, and they have lost all value.
@@user-nv7fx1gd7z SQUAD I’m pretty shure of it it’s the only game that I know of the shows weapons in detail with there real military designated names like the m110 sass
I like how this guy doesn't complain about everything, he explains why they're realistic or not realistic and even gives some reasons why rockstar couldn't do certain things (such as with the sawed offs cocking mechanism)
The reload speed is a major issue with online. You may not know this but rockstar sped up reload speed and changed third person movement to make the game more arcadey. Doing that in context of a game that focused so much on realism in small details, this sucked and contributed to a lot of players quitting the game. It’s not the only reason by any means. But it contributed.
@@Kira-ik8ld it was fine in single player. Those designers are real artists. They perfectly balanced gameplay necessities with believability. When RDO first came out, it was very different from how the online team butchered it.
One of the early Volcanic Pistols was so incredibly weak, that someone purchased one in order to "end themselves". The day after they shot themselves in the head, they returned the pistol to the store. There are "weak" pistol calibres, and then there is the Volcanic Pistol. Its in its own class.
Yeah, there’s only so much powder you can fit inside of a hollowed out bullet. It was not a good gun, definitely- but it’s still very cool. I mean look at it, it uses caseless ammunition and is called the “volcanic.”
@@fromthebackseat4865 rdr2 showcases what it easily could've been though, same with the LeMat if they were both paper cartridge firing en masse and if the Volcanic upped it's velocity. The volcanic is honestly revolutionary in design for it's time, it's just the power and ammo type make it little more than a souped up airsoft pistol irl.
Well, more like _"Someone told that story in print in an age of particularly florid journalism and no one can actually confirm it ever happened,"_ but yeah
Gotta give props to whoever wrote the articles for the volcanic in the gunsmith book. The explanation of rocket ball to Brass bullets seems logical to me tbh.
I sincerely hope you've seen a rise in donations towards the museum. Sadly, I can't afford to help out myself, but really feel like this show deserves some support.
@@jonathanferguson1211 Could it be the link/site in the description is broken (or even hacked)? It takes me to a weird menu, when I click donations, it seems to load something for a second and then reloads the same menu. If I click on "trusts and foundations" clearly loads a scam site
@@dunbass7149 no? John was meh. I never got attached like I did with Arthur. I didn’t think he was as badass and cool ect. I was fucking depressed when Arthur died lmao.
So refreshing to hear one of these experts actually understand it’s a game and so realism sometimes has to be bent to keep gameplay fluid. Love this guy and “ok pause…” is definitely my new catchphrase in life.
The double action revolver in rdr actually does have a precision penalty when using it in double action (you can see it better in third person or without aiming down the sights in first person) but actually you can shoot it single action if you press the aim button before every shot, and have better precision
wish they made to where you could squeeze the trigger to shoot in single action to simulate an accurate single action shot and tap to shoot double action. Then again it's rockstar if *they* didn't think of it they won't add it because of their ego. Just like they never thought to release a game that isn't unfinished or at the very least add patches to story mode to fix the recent bugs they created with the online update... mooks.
The thing about dual wielding it is yes its less accurate, but if you use Gunslingers Choice (tier 3 is most effective) it makes it the best weapon in the game fr.
Mad respect to the guy recording all this. They had to play sort of far into the game to be able to unlock all the guns and then drop their honor all the way down for the footage.
Kind of surprised not as many people talk about it. Then again, it wasn't one of Rockstar's greatest. Red Dead Redemption was definitely a big step up in terms of gameplay and graphics, but without Revolver, there is no Redemption.
“He’s cocking it with one hand, and I think that’s impossible” Hickok45: also it took me five months to realize he was talking about a volcanic revolver
"The Volcanic seems to perform like a handcannon in-game" Isn't that odd? Since I thought the downfall of the Volcanic was overall weak and expensive ammo. So in reality it was a massive underperformer if anything. Maybe I'm wrong about that though.
It mentions in game if you read newspapers or catalogs that the manufacturer in the story modernizes the design to use the same ammunition as other pistols or something like that. That's also why it's shown to use brass casings and takes 'repeater ammo'.
@@Themaxwithnoname It wasn’t the inventor that tried to do that in the story, it was just some guy who bought the gun to do specifically that with it. It’s also worth noting that he’s said to have got the .31 caliber version, which was the weaker of the two calibers you could get it in. And critically, that was an anecdotal story; it’d be incredibly difficult to confirm if that actually happened and if it’s actually true. It may be a true story, or it may have been an exaggeration, or possibly even have been a true story that was just a fluke because he got a bad batch of ammo or something. Was the Volcanic underpowered? Hell yes. Was it so underpowered that you couldn’t even shoot yourself with it? Maybe.
As for weapons Rockstar has cheated a bit with... I'd say the LeMat is one of the worst contenders haha. It's amazing to look at in real life, but it's frustrating as hell to reload.
@@LongTimeAgoNL LeMat is a pretty good gun in rdr2 suckw they don't put these additional weapons to the campaign like how all weapons from the campaign in rdr1 were put into rdr2. Rdr2 the LeMat Is nice to use cuz of its toggle fire with two shotgun shots. Unreal but still they were trying it out so its not just another pistol also in rdr1 they really had the guns correctly where they were supposed to be rdr2 bruh they downgraded alot of weapons..... Masuer semi automatic pistol was one of the best pistols in rdr1 aside from HP/high power pistol. The best lever action was Evans repeater in rdr1 cuz of it not having the stupid stats from rdr2. Rdr1 weapons got degraded so bad thanks rdr2. I like the game but still theres alot of issues with them firearms in the game.
@Mike Oskam I don't think that's it, because on some he didn't have a reference already. So I believe they were just missed. Honestly disappointing, I was looking forward to the 1851 cold navy
@@FNNIGGA445 I think you're right, and I've definitely seen multiple Springfield rifles in the Leeds museum, they probably recorded more and it just didn't make the final cut, shame.
Why they provided him footage of the character shooting HUMANS with the varmint rifle is beyond me. I wish instead they had mentioned to him the fact that the Varmint Rifle is included in the game precisely because this isn't just a bandit simulator but also a pretty damn good hunting simulator and you need that gun to get perfect pelts on Rabbits, Badgers, Skunks, and other "varmints".
@@ХристоМартунковграфЛозенски i accidentally shot myself in the thigh with a .22 once it felt like a wasp sting,it did hurt a lot more when i had to dig the bullet out though.
it surprised me a lot that coyotes and foxes needed a repeater,in real life its encouraged that you hunt them with .22 Winchester even makes special .22 rounds for them.
I was also pretty upset that the Carcano wasn't talked about. It's also REALLY criminal John didn't talk about the LeMat, aka the Revolver with a shotgun built into it. Who knows, maybe a part 2? I mean if TF2 got a part to, RDR2 should defiantly get one too! Maybe the Carcano and the LeMat will be in that one, you never know!
He has written more than one book :) He also kickstarted a book called Thorneycroft to SA80: British Bullpup Firearms, 1901-2020 which is published by Headstamp Publishing (i.e Gun Jesus among others
I love how you can truly see the evolution of how the Volcanic Pistol evolved into the Henry Rifle, which then evolved into the 1866 Winchester. One of my favorite stories is how Winchester, Henry, and Smith & Wesson all worked together at separate times to perfect a repeating gun that started as a pistol, and evolved into one of the most famous rifles of it's time.
I always found it quite impressive how accurate Micah was with his shots considering how fast he fires his double actions, let alone dual wielding them
Need to do Hunt Showdown, a great mix of highly realistic Wild West weapons and weird botch job anachronisms like the Mosin Avtomat (I’d love to know if that’s feasible or not)
@@moistewater9437 the Huot Auto Rifle was also featured on Battlefield 1. Hunt: Showdown features Huot's action and drum magazine fitted into a Mosin-Nagant's stock.
@@Colter94 It is true that I never played the games, but wasn’t John the protagonist from the first game, and Arthur Morgan the protagonist of the second?
@@owencarey2954 alright so first of, massive spoiler warning if anyone reading this wants to buy the game. Arthur eventually dies, in chapter 6, Arthur knows he´s going to die so he tries to help as many people as possible and kinda redeems himself. After that you play as John who tries to leave his gang past behind and start a new life with his family. You spend the two chapters building Beechers hope in which you live in RDR1. So you get to play as both of them, I´m sorry that this explanation was a bit long, but I just love this game.
I feel like Rockstar did a good job at keeping them as realistic as possible, while also keeping in mind playability in game. And honestly I feel that the compromises that were made were to smooth the experience to allow a fun variation of it. Like how the hammers magically are cocked once they come back into view.
@skOsH Hunt is kinda of like tarkov with a lot of its own elements and a completely different time period, defo watch videos on it jackfrags did a couple of you want to see a big RU-vidr play it, it’s so tense and incredibly satisfying when you exfill
What makes me like this guy (other than his expertise obviously), is the fact that he understands that games have to be balanced for the sake of good gameplay. I see a lot of experts, especially older people, that doesn't understand why gaming companies doesn't go all-out when they have the resources to do so with ease and they don't understand that most games are not made for the purpose of being super realistic, like Tarkov for example. Great guy!
@@angrypancake4358 Well the lemat did exist, however it was a percussion revolver. The lemat mark 2 ingame fires bullets. The hunters do a lot of gunsmithing and modding, sawing off barels, adding blades and scopes.
Great video! One thing on the pump shotgun that bothered me so much, though, is that you never rack the pump right before you shoot. That messes up your aim and puts more stress on you right before the shot. You rack it right after you shoot so you're ready on the followup and can concentrate on aiming. It felt so off.
@@eddie_23 Hunt guns are way above EFT when it comes to models and handling. And especialy when it comes to sound effects. Hunt has the best sound in gaming, period.

Pausing - When he talks about the Volcanic, he makes no mention of how in game it appears to be ejecting spent casings, when the Volcanic used caseless ammunition.
Also, I dunno if it's just me but I feel like Rockstar is mocking the irl counterpart of the gun by making it OP in game, contrary to how the gun was in reality
Now I'm not an "expert" with firearms, but I know that from research, the M1899 Pistol is the FN Browning M1900 which uses .32 ACP. That's a pretty bold sidearm to carry around in the Wild West.
All that rod is, is a speed loader. They made very few of them during the civil War for the Cavalry to reload on horse back. He opens up the buttstock, and dumps the rounds in using the rod/tube.

@@thewolf6943 You are not alone as when I was younger I thought all revolvers were magnums, but I thought that for years until I see playthroughs of Resident evil 2 having the SAA has a seconding gun that uses 9mm, I thought it was strange until I got like RDR at some point some years ago, then I decided to go on a internet hunt and learn that revolvers were the first/earliest brass cartridge guns, not only that a number of brass cartridge guns existed around the civil war era. Just that the Musket was percussion cap, imagine if you fully upgraded your starting weapon in a game, that is the musket.
I know this had been said countless of times before but I feel like we need to stress on it more: I fucking love this wise man's knowledge of games and game design ON TOP of weapon knowledge, such a remarkable person...also huge thanks for starting and actually maintaining this series Gamespot!
So glad to have actually been to the Royal Armouries in Leeds, some of the most interesting weapons in one place. Used to go there once a year, until the pandemic atleast.
@@endornaut They are! It's probably the best and most realistic portrayal of late 19th century firearms. There's also some very interesting fantasy weapons!
I own multiple modern firearms but I love my older firearms that were pass down in my family. My grandpa passed down a few Marlin lever actions and a colt single action Navy model. They are simply beautiful! I’ll never sell them.
The only complaint I have with that game really is that, the guns you have always has the same serial number where you can see it. It would be nice to have two or three versions to play with, maybe a clean or dirty one. Just a minor gripe really, more variety in weapons, or even different conditions of the same weapons would be nice. besides not having the tech to play the game without lagging too much thus dying all the time. I have a question tho for veterans, with or without sleeves?
The Last Hard Men with Charlton Heston and James Coburn also. Great list of movies you’ve comprised. I forgot about The Professionals and I’m disappointed in myself because I love that movie.
Rare guns featured in Red Dead 2 there's quite a few of them but my personal favorite in Red Dead 2 when it comes to rare guns is the lemat revolver and the trapdoor Springfield

The broom handle Mauser, or one of its descendants, became the basis for a very famous sci fi weapon. The prop department of Star Wars turned it into the DL-44 blaster, the side arm Han Solo carries around… and kills Greedo with.
Could be nice to see a video about: -hunt showdown for more or less the same era -rising storm 2 vietnam -insurgency sandstorm Great video in general, keep up the interesting work
3:00 your not wrong actually the double action fires faster with hip fire and is less accurate while the single action is slower and way more accurate and slow on the reload in game Also the main use of the varmint rifle is to not ruin the skins and bodies of smaller animals like birds and rabbits cause a bolt action or rolling block would probably ruin a rabbit skin
That's something that I think Tarkov does well. Topping off the gun with an extra bullet when you load one into the chamber. I wish more games could pick up on that.
I think he's being streamed some clips by a dude who records this stuff in the games. That's why he asks to pause. I might be wrong since he reaches for something every time he says "pause" so, well, maybe he does it himself
I actually read the book that Jonathan wrote on the c96 carbine, the mauser, and it was very informative and I was surprised how enjoyable reading it was! Anyway keep making the great content!
