LaPetiteInes95 Don’t worry. though I never failed my SEP.. after 7 years in the Airline and I was sick due to back problems, eventually I couldn’t take MC anymore and had to do Ground job as per the company ruling and HR in my country. Then what happen , I did pretty well on ground and eventually the company needed me to be on ground. issues came later when I had to pick a few good flight Attendant for Private Jet as the owner seems to have problems with one after the other. .. In short I was asked to discuss with the pilot in charged of that company , conclusion the pilot wanted me to do that one flight so I would know what they are looking for... cut story short the owners family and the guests liked me and they requested for me over and over again ... I ended from a Charter Flight Attendant to a Personal Flight Attendant and lasted for about ten years.. YES things do happen for a reason, have faith and do what is right.. All the best to you. ..

People need to think carefully when they move to foreign countries and especially to countries where human rights have always been an issue (how can living in Dubai or Qatar be a dream for some people, I still wonder...). I am working in Asia and chose my country carefully and sadly things are happening so I am being cautious with future plans. There are zillions opportunities in the Middle East and in particular in the UAE and Qatar I could have applied for... but no, you will never see me in this part of the world because in situations when you need support, you will be abandoned like you never existed. You have no protection whatsoever and like mentioned in the video, your life can change drastically or dramatically... One note though... The process for working in Emirates is hard but so is for any job when relocation is involved, competition is ferocious and tough. It is tough and I feel for the crew but hopefully people will consider what I wrote above more carefully in the future... Good luck everyone

I think the reasons some people choose to work in the Middle East is because they don't care so much about how they are going to be treated there as long as they got jobs and earning more than they could in their home countries, then they are fine
@m.p.r.6999
@m.p.r.6999 3 года назад
@RCH PE so you think everyone who chose to work and live in the Middle East are not in their right minds/crazies? No, people who illegally drink alcohol in the Middle East aren't executed (death sentence), they are fined and imprisoned. And speaking of blasphemy, it is a bad thing, whether you are a Christian or a Muslim or whether you belong to any other religion. Don't disrespect others and their faiths just because their beliefs are different than yours. Mind your own business, respect other people cultures and their faiths, respect their laws and you'll be fine.

With the exception of a major European airline. They had to release some of their flight attendants as well, but at least offering the firm opportunity to be re-hired when demand goes up! Alternatively they offered part-time work or unpaid leave up to six months. All this is the result of tough negotiations between the airline and the major flight attendant's union! BTW: employees rights are much stronger here than in the UAE.

The competition in Brazil IS INSANE. I went back to Brazil to do the interview I didn’t pass the 1 phase, I was so so nervous, and there had at least 300 people, but I heard one year before when Emirates opened again to new joiners it was 1.500 candidates in the open day. After 6 months I apply again but here in US, and OMG, only 60 people, it was waaaay better and even much easier, not so much pressure, I felt much less pressure and rush, and I got it to the assessment day. I always say for any Brazilian that can try in another country, do it! I really think we get much more time and attention to show our capacity, since the interviewer is not load of work with so many people at the same time to analyze.

Great video. However I want to point out that Dubai or any Gulf city is only as expensive as you make it to be. You are not forced to have a pizza for $19, you can cook at home, or you can eat at cheap Indian places where you can have a whole meal for maybe 5 Dirhams. I think too many people fall on the debt trap or want to buy fancy stuff, there are plenty of people in the Gulf happily living on 2000 dhs a month and still able to send more than half of it back home

These cheap Indian places in Dubai must be well hidden. I could only seem to find burger and pizza joints, or expensive steakhouses last time I was there. In other gulf cities I didn’t have to venture too far to find them.

Touhid Anwar True, majority of the people coming from West and European countries spend a lot on expensive food, partying and save little to nothing and later they cry. Cabin crew at Emirates receive a lot of perks and their accomodation is paid. Not everyone likes Indian food but there are other cheap options for food but they think they are too posh to sit with the labour class and eat there.

For the well-being of all Emirates staff I think you under educated everyone on the issue of debt in the UAE. It’s important to cover the topic of debt for those who are losing jobs. Crew who have financial commitments with banks in the UAE and cannot meet bank obligations will find themselves in serious trouble due to UAE laws. What many countries would see as a civil matter such as an unpaid credit card is considered a criminal matter in the UAE. If you have any debt in the UAE it must be paid back before leaving or you’ll be stopped and detained at the airport. Once an employer has terminated you, all the authorities are alerted. I heard UAE authorities are checking with banks on expats with debts as they know people will be trying to abscond. During the 2008 crisis expats just left and negotiated with the banks safely from their home countries. Those who thought the most honorable thing was to work negotiations with the banks while still in the UAE found themselves in worst circumstances. The difference now is there aren’t flights so it’s not so easy to just get on a plane and leave. All the evidence is there from 2008. Sharing because it’s important to make sure you are well informed for your own safety. Also really surprised authorities are allowing you to post this level of private information on Emirates firing strategy. I wouldn’t highlight anything relating to private investments staff have been making as you’ll flag attention to focus on Emirates staff. I trust you are safely outside of the country. People have been jailed for far less. Be careful!!
@WishCasting
@WishCasting 4 года назад
Hi Terry! Good point. I purposely didn't cover it since I really don't know much about it. Most information we provided is scattered and available on the news already, we just added our own relatable experience to it. There's very little information we added to what Dubai media outlets are already saying. As far as I know, you get jailed only if your deposit check towards the bank (signed and given when opening the account or taking a loan, not sure here) gets bounced. You have 3 months to pay a bounce fine and the debt back. Meanwhile anyone can go home and settle from abroad (yes, if flights were made available). You can negotiate fines and debts from abroad much better, by hiring lawyers and not having to spend your nights in jail. I'm sure there's a lot of info out there. We're fine, we resigned 2 years back. This video is to support the crew who are now being discontinued and need empathy as much as possible. Thanks for the comment! Let's hope aviation goes back to normal swiftly (it'll be hard for a while I know) and let's hope today's mistakes serve us a better future tomorrow!

Very well said. This video speaks the truth. I say this because I was once cabin crew for Emirates. The hard work and dedication of EK crew is magnificent! I've had the best years of my life in Emirates and became a stronger person. My heart goes out to all my friends and EK colleagues. It's normal to be scared. But all I can say is "COURAGE!". I am praying for the best outcome out of all this. Also, we should not forget the many hundred and thousands of expats in the Middle East who are starving (some even committing suicide - not reported, of course) at the moment without any support from the governments and their own embassies. 🙏🙏🙏

Wait! You have not been fired, you have been laid-off. You are laid-off when you are not at fault (i.e., staff reductions due to the particular economic situation) and therefore re-hirable, while you are being fired when you are "at fault" (stealing, absentee, etc.). Clean slate brother. You are up for re-hiring with another airline as soon as the dust clears!

@lindana08797
@lindana08797 4 года назад
The information and quality of the video are impressive. One more thing that people might no keep in mind is the lack of communication from the company towards its employees. The way the have delivered the news - or lack of, actually- is also what has all the crew losing sleep at night. They have not come forward to their employees announcing what to expect. No one knows how many crew are expected to be fired, how long will this continue for, even the criteria that they are using to choose the ones that get redundant. Most of what you have said in the video, although accurate it is still rumours because the company has not made any official announcement to us other than they would fire crew. And even this was not informed to its employees first. The crew continuously have to find out about their employer actions through the news or rumours, because they don't communicate. It's psychological torture for many. It definitely needs to be managed in a better way.

This is true Michelle, I'm ship crew and I'm one of those who are always treating themselves and shopping like there's no tomorrow. I was about to go home on vacation when the lockdown started, I had a 5 day cruise planned to Mexico, 3 days in NYC and then flight home. Luckily cruise, flight to NYC and hotel was refunded, however the flight from JFK to DUR might money gone if SAA goes belly up. With no sign of when the industry will open up again in North America, the financial devastation that will follow in two/three months will be scary if there's another extension to the pause. However I'm lucky that I'll have a job after the pause without having to apply again, paying off my credit cards will be a pain but at least there's that security at the end of the day and no more "life is for the living" going to be saving like crazy now.

This is such a great video really balanced and comprehensive. Love the sound quality too! I am ex EK crew when we had a small amount of aircraft. I agree about the Supervisory roles even in the old days we had Pursers (as they were previously known) who we all knew what we were in for in the briefing room. Power hungry, bullies actually.. most of them were women surprisingly and in todays world would probably be sued with their behaviour. I have to say the majority of crew 99% were amazing and I am still friends with them over 20 years later.

Sara Larsson is EK pay really low? They pay way more than junior union FA in US. They don’t have to pay rent as well. Their per diem, is also pretty high if they fly. Living cost can be low if you want to. All the domestic worker there got paid much less and survived. This is the reason why you need to save for rainy day. Some people need to put things in perspective. FA in south east asia make much less.

Jkjkjk there is a thing called dignity that money can’t buy. Also US citizens find it hard to work for a foreign company that doesn’t value workers rights, even with all our issues in the US we have labor and unemployment laws that can have some level of protections like Retirement funds and social security. Plus it is very hard to divorce yourself from the US tax system and obligations as an America citizen even when working and living abroad. Working for Emirates in Dubai, we will still have to pay income taxes and other bills connected to the US. Can you imagine receiving minimum wage take home pay and paying American taxes on top of it plus paying for your US Student loans, credit card debt and other bills in Dubai from your merger salary? When you see Americans working abroad, they’re mostly working for an NGO which pay comparable USA salary, US State department, military defense industry, millionaire business man/ company executive/highly skilled (tech, pharmaceutical, oil) or have a spouse abroad with ties to said country for immigration purposes especially when a family is involved. Most Americans abroad are retired not young 20/30 year olds seriously looking to start their careers when compared to the colleagues from poorer countries.

I am in hotel industry and do my Globe travel regardless. I decided not to go for Emirates, due to time frame and my personal commitments in Melbourne. Somehow I manage to gain a employment in dubai in 2018, lived there for a year felt dubai wasn’t the place I would want to live... and I’m glad Emirates didn’t happen for me upon being in dubai for a year... then again I would always enjoy being a Emirates passenger, also being a skywards member. What a attention to details presentation. loving it ..... I am pretty much agree with what you have said and mentioned on this particular video and very diplomatic and loads of facts and evidences ..... I have work for Emirates for the passed 24 years. Emirates still a baby when baby ... no one know about Emirates. I stated with Emirates with THREE B727 and ONE A310 and ONE A300. I have to be honest though ... i had a such a fabulous and amazing time Emirates. The redundancy protocol has been changed comparing to the beginning because of social medias feedback. I can't judge or say anything negative about Emirates ...because i left 2012 and as far as i know ... Emirates has been very kind to me. ONE thing that i am absolutely agree with you is, people have to move on and never know whats tomorrow will bring you "Hello Tomorrow" ..also i have also offered lots of advised for those who are been redundant .... Because of Emirates, I have a very good job with LH group and still flying and doing Recruitment and Training and Check Flight .... in my mid 40's i have decided to leave Emirates ... i will stuck in Dubai forever otherwise and it will be too late to venture outside Emirates. People have to think there are so much to offer after Emirates. Perhaps, you should also adding extra facts in your next video that redundancy and pay cut not only apply for Pilots and Cabin Crew, managers are also fall into redundancy (to be fair)... Good luck and keep up the informative and interesting and professional presentation.

Multi billion dollar debt, every year is more like it. It was all a facade propped up by the UAE. I worked for emirates from 2009-2016. Those were the days. Then it was getting too much. We were constantly flying. I was so exhausted and if I called sick I would get my manager to call me to the office. I have great memories, but I would never work for emirates again. We were pure slaves! Forget about the glamour there was none! As soon as the seat bell sign would go off you would be a waiter for the rest of the flight. There was some good perks. But dubai itself is a crap country to live in. I lasted that long cause I needed the money. The average crew flies these days is 1 or 2 years. They just couldn’t take the pressure. Towards the end of my contract on every flight there was at least 6 crew who had resigned also. We were all fed up. Now with this crisis forget about it! All they would get is Asian Crew cause they will work for that little money they won’t be able to attract western crew members anymore.

UAE in general is getting so tough. I am a citizen and it's hard on us to graduate from certain university or to work in certain companies because of the pressure and stress. I dropped out of one of those universities after thinking about the years I will spend, my friend is still there and cries herself to sleep every night from stress. This is for us citizens to be able to compete with world standards, with forgine ppl who work here and we also learn from forginers to be better at what we do. Studying and jobs are getting harder and harder each year. I can only pray for expats in this country. I hope UAE get better. Criticism is what we need at this point. We can definitely do better for everyone who wants to work and live here. I believe us and expats are the same, both of us work to better the standards and name of this country, I wish better things can be done about this. To ppl who say every airline does this, Emirates is the best in the world, you shouldn't compare it to other airlines because it can only compare to itself at this point. Everyone who work and live here should be able to feel safe when a pandemic like this hits, you are just as precious and important as we are to this country, and I hope UAE does better because it can do better. First of all, I feel bad for the cabin crew who were fired. TBH, its not just Emirates, I believe every airline in the world are going through the same thing. In the video I saw a logo of our national airline Air Seychelles, they too are going through redundancy. I also know people from there as I work at the airport also.I was once an employee for that airline, so I can relate. I know what they are going through. Its tough and finding a job has become really difficult. This pendemic has become a nightmare for the entire world. Back on topic, I love Emirates Airlines and I've been lucky to fly with them as a passenger. My dream is to one day work with Emirates but not as a cabin crew and preferably in my home country. With regards to issues that gets escalated to management, I know one airline thats much harsher, not everyone will agree with me as maybe they do not know or are simply ignorant or blind sighted, but Qatar Airways is that airline. I got the chance to work for them but did not pass probation. I went through a similar problem. That day I felt as if my heart shattered into a million pieces when they told me my services were no longer required. I know how it feels. Luckily I managed to find another job at the airport and not with an airline. TBH even if I work with passengers I miss working with airlines. I hope this pandemic has made people realise especially the supervisor that there are better ways to solve issues without escalation to management and that they will be more empathetic to others in future. I wish all the affected pilots and cabin crew the best of luck with their future endeavors and hopefully everything works out. I also hope once everything gets back on track that Emirates re-hires some of these people if not all.

I'm from India a third world country, how would we be treated then ? I think it's best if I just focus on getting a front office job in the US, yes ofcourse we got to spend a large sum of money for the possibility of me to get there but then it seems a better decision for me mentally and physically long term. After all money and new destinations are well and good but a stable career is more of my cup of tea

Now, I'm living with my family and friends, working as a Supervisor in one of the best hotels in the world, and getting paid WAYYYY more than Emirates' "First Class Cabin Crew" is getting in a month. I Feel bad for those who really worked their butts off and beat the odds to get into Emirates (especially the newly recruited ones) to be getting USD250 a month, or worse - getting chopped off... No bitterness BUT!! Best of luck, Emirates! Won't be long 'til your company is history.

When they say "the best airline in the world" ,they mean from the passengers point of view, not for the workers ! it can be the worst airline in the world for the staff..

We flew Emirates to Spain before the Pandemic (March 2nd) and they were no different to Singapore Airlines, nothing special at all imo. Then as countries BEGAN to go into lockdown, and I'm talking like mid March, Emirates cancelled our return flight home which was meant to be March 31st, without any notification what so ever. We just happened to check our itinerary and saw it had been removed. They completely shut down to the public in every possible way, leaving thousands of passengers stranded world wide. So we will never be choosing to fly this horrible airline again. When we did get home it was with Qatar and I must say they were brilliant...amazing food, service etc and they continued to fly passengers home throughout the pandemic.

Exactly the same with what I've been thinking. Qatar Airways is just like that. It might be number one airline for customers, but for workers... You know what I mean.

I am an American flight attendant and our company is furloughing thousands of us. Business is business. I want my company to survive and if that means cutting us then so be it. What I hope for is a drop in coronavirus cases and for everyone to take procedures to protect themselves, seriously. The world thinks this pandemic is a joke but look at the global economy. All of us are hurting!!! Do your part, protect your health and try to minimize traveling unless it is for emergencies. The reason why this virus outbreak occurred was due to traveling... in the future, I do believe tourism will suffer the most. No matter which way to put it if there is no cure for this virus there will be no hope to prevent this from spreading. Countries will start becoming more strict when it comes to allowing people in. Let's be realistic and focus on our health first.

They are going to rehire people when things get better and better! But will aviation be the same after this? many people think not. I used to think that Emirates was a wonderful company. But the more I read about it, the more I know I was wrong.

Their hub model is going to shrink somewhat thanks to the availability of long range flights bypassing the Emirates.. So their market will shrink and they won’t need as many planes and crew...

Aviation in general is a tough industry to be in, I started flying myself in the late 90s and worked out quickly it's not the life I wanted to live. I've watched several friends (pilots) go through divorce, miss birthdays, Christmas with family, only to end up unemployed and while it used to be a very rewarding career financially that's definitely not so much the case any longer. I do hope everyone impacted gets through it, just remember things always get better!

I really feel for the workers who lost their job or got sever pay reduction (I have experienced the same in this pandemic). I do, I really do. But my question here is... what did you expect? Do you really think Emirates cares about their employees? They are a capitalistic company. They only care about money. It's the what they sell, the idea of luxury, whether it's their planes, lounges or the promises of a good life if you work for them. But when you decide to work in a country where there are no labor laws and for a company that doesn't allow unions, in order to earn more, you also have to accept the risks involved. So I feel very bad for everyone but I feel worse for those workers who don't even have the 50% of salary or that have to work in the UAE cause they have no alternative, not as a choice, not cause they wanna "travel and see the world".

you don't pay any tax so i guess you should know the consequences. it s a business in the end and if they assume the planes are gonna be empty for 2 years why wold you keep 21000 cabin crew? you give them a place to live and pay their utilities for the whole time they are there. personally i didn;t find an airline that doesn't treat you as a number. i rather be crew with ek and get all the perks than break my back on a low cost in my country.

God bless all the people struggling to get by. It is sad for the individuals, and also for the company trying to survive a difficult situation. We all have aspirations, and when these are thwarted it seems so unfair. Try to refocus and attain success in a smaller situation with baby-steps. Keep positive as much as possible. God bless us all.

This is an interesting video but sadly your price of living is way off. Phone/Internet is lower than quoted, as is eating out when you consider the platinum/facecard discounts. It is an appalling amount of money to be expected to live off, and it is excellent you are using your platform to get it into the public domain, but your credibility would be greatly enhanced if you quoted accurate figures throughout.

thank you for your input. Prices for internet both home and mobile were taken by Etisalat.ae (check the prices, they are the same). Usually a Margherita pizza (basic pizza) on zomato (app we used to use in Dubai for home delivery), would cost around 45~55 AED. Dining out at a nice Italian pizzeria would cost you up to or more than 75 AED ( ristorante la bussola is an example). Nobody is saying you have to go to such expensive places but, you may understand by these prices (easily found online and prices I was used to when I lived in Dubai), it is indeed more expensive than living for example in Portugal or Italy or Spain or Germany, or Asia. Trust me, even when you want to buy computer equipment, you always have to deal with a 25% increase in price compared to the USA. This is my personal experience. Maybe you had a different one. Given the situation, everyone should definitely follow a more humble and down to earth lifestyle. That's the only way to cope with such a low income momentarily.
