A New York City firefighter broke a car's windows to access a blocked fire hydrant. He then threaded the firehose through the car and attached it to the hydrant. They were fighting a major four-alarm blaze in the Bronx that destroyed multiple businesses. As for the owner of the car, reports say he's racked up 33 fire hydrant violations in the last two years. The violations totaled more than $9,000.

Parking is difficult to come by in nyc, ppl generally do NOT give 15 feet, they just don't, I rarely see ppl give 5, much less 10 feet, but ppl definitely try to not be directly in front of it. That firefighter was over the top. Fire fighters don't run plates, so I wonder if he was extra like that because of the neighborhood. One would think that he wasted time breaking 4 windows when it would've been faster to throw the hose over the top, or just break 2, but all 4 door windows?

It really doesn't matter if the firefighters COULD have snaked the hose a different way, the point is they don't HAVE to. So the lesson to be learned is simple - don't want your windows smashed out, don't park anywhere near a hydrant. This isn't rocket science.
@TwoPlusTwoEqualsFive32
@TwoPlusTwoEqualsFive32 24 дня назад
Also those hoses need to run in as straight a line as possible to get maximum flow. The more kinks and turns the hose has the worse the water pressure would be. So while it could be "snaked" around the car it would slow the water down. You can try it with a garden hose, add a bunch of kinks and loops to a garden hose and the pressure will be much lower.

No, the firefighter did NOT _HAVE_ to do that, he CHOSE to do it out of spite. Moreover, he WASTED TIME breaking the windows instead of just going straight to the fire-hydrant. 😒 The law says 15' as a BLANKET rule, it's not a scientific necessity; clearly in this case, they COULD have used the hydrant without 15' of space. 🙄 People think the driver having 33 violations means he's a serial scumbag, but they're ignoring more statistically-likely scenarios: there's a fire-hydrant in front of the guy's house or work or something and they keep ticketing him as a dick-move despite there being enough room to connect a hose (also, people assume the violations mean firefighters had to actually _connect_ a hose 33 times, but that's not true, cops just saw his car was near a fire-hydrant and gave a ticket; this might have been the only time a fire-truck was actually around). 🤦

As a career firefighter with more than 20 years service, I have a rather strong opinion on this. This was 100% unnecessary and nothing more than a big show of power. Yeah, it looked cool in the movie "Backdraft", but not cool in reality. I have a huge issue with blocking hydrants, but that connection could have been made over or around the car. This was simply "I'm a bad-ass" theatrics, that makes the firefighters look as bad as the person who blocked the hydrant.

It’s the length of the hose. It’s looks like it could have been close to short. I’ve done training for volunteer fire fighter training before and you make those calls pulling up. You know it may fit under the car or it may go over the car, why waist time trying alternatives, when you can definitely go through the car that shouldn’t be there. It’s not about saving time it’s about being effective.

It wasn't the best option as going through the car's frame and bending 90 degrees will obstruct flow more than if they were to go over the hood. It looked like the firefighter knew he would be able to break the windows without punishment and then decided on prioritizing that instead of actually putting out the fire in the given situation.
