Firefighter Forcible Entry: Pulling Hinges from a Metal Door and Jamb

This video is intended to answer the questions of when and how would you pull hinges from a metal door and jamb. It's important to mention that when forcing entry we should start our approach from the lock side FIRST. Attacking the hinges should be a LAST resort due additional obstacles and security measures that can be hidden from view on the inside of the door - Including padlocks, slide bolts, security hinges and door closers - All of which can be located on the hinge side of the door.
Beyond this, FFs should also consider bringing both a set of Irons as well as a circular saw (with steel cutting blade) up to the scene. Having both available will increase your tactical options and allow an efficient transition from Plan A to Plan B, etc.
This video is NOT a recommendation for attacking hinges - It was produced to simply give the viewer a perspective of the time and effort needed to accomplish this task. The best advice I can give is to become proficient with the use of the Irons - When properly implemented by knowledgable and experienced operators they will be effective in defeating many if not most of the doors you will encounter.
Train, Stay Prepared, Be Aggressive, Make the Save - SURVIVE!

Thanks everyone for your comments and feedback - To clarify we DO NOT recommend pulling hinges; If you watch the ENTIRE video it should give you a perspective why. YES a rotary saw is a great tool and one that we recommend bringing up to the building as it may be your first choice and/or best option, but remember this - The "IRONS" won't run out of gas, can't flood when starting, are easier to carry than a saw and can work in a smoke filled environment where a saw may not.

Not a firefighter, rather im a locksmith. Forced entry videos are super interesting, as it uses methods that would be unthinkable in my trade. But it's really good to know that those attacks are possible and used (even if rarely). I have been to lock outs where i have had to cut hinges off, which sucked, but i have never needed to use a halligan.

Good stuff Dale...We trained our people on this technique years ago as an option in the DCFD at a Civil War era hospital with much thicker hinges and longer screws than we have today. When we got to the point where the Halligan couldn't pry out the hinge, we took another Halligan and placed it's forks behind the original and drove this bar too. It worked quite well. Give it a try next time you drill if you haven't alrady. Like all your videos and follow you

@DALEGPEKEL
@DALEGPEKEL 5 лет назад
@@BrBCatsOnFireLuL - Absolutely another option, but only if the hinge pins allow for this - Many commercial hinge assemblies have flanges/caps on the bottom of the hinge preventing tapping out and pulling the pins. Other assemblies have a small hole which in some cases allows the use of a nail (ideally a fluted masonry nail) to tap the pin up from the bottom so it can be pulled. We carry nails on our helmets for just this application as well as for chocking doors and using on magnetic door locks to prevent the magnet from re-locking after it's been opened. Thanks for your comment.

If your pulling the hinges on a metal door, striking the door next to the hinge will dent the door and start to pull the hinge screws out of the door. A potential plan "B" is to move the halligan side to side once the fork is in place over the hinge, one ff on each side of the halligan, this will do some major damage to the hinge screws. Great video Dale!

A company called Carolina Roller makes this thing called a travelers hook. It costs 1$. I learned about this tool watching penetration test videos. Defcon videos. The travelers hook will not work if there are drop bars or added dead bolts but on some doors it is possible to use a travelers hook to simply move the latch bolt out of the way and defeat the door within 5 seconds. It may be something to try first on some doors in the future. Super light small and cheep tool. Also it would work right away or not at all so it wouldn't waste a lot of time on a useless attack. Mainly useful on doors without added drop bars or dead bolts.

Good afternoon gents, have you ever tried striking the hinge on the side not from the top, as in hit it so the hinge goes backwards into the door? In theory there would be enough movement to loosen or shear the screws? Have a great day.
@vorkev1
@vorkev1 9 лет назад
on doors wear the hing will not come loos wedge the gap in the door and use this to try to pry the door open the door will not open but will loosed the screws a little and give a tad more room then going back to attacking the hings should not make it ezer and faster to remove. also you can hit a hinge from the sides to help loosen it up

Does anyone know if it particularly matters if the curve of the bevel is curving into or away from the jamb? Curving away may make it go onto/behind the hinge a little better but if the tips curve INTO the jamb I could see how it gives a little more elvergae with the ends biting into the jamb.

Quick question, would pulling hinge pins be viable? while some can be a security type, I have to wonder about run of the mill hinges, because at my house, those pins love to wander out of the hinges...
@DALEGPEKEL
@DALEGPEKEL 6 лет назад
Yes pulling the pins is definitely a viable option and we have used it as a non destructive or "Gentleman's Truck" technique to get in - As you mentioned as long as they are removable. Many have a small opening in the bottom of the hinge which allows us to use a fluted masonry nail to tap the pin up to start the process and than once the flange/head of the pin is exposed we can grab or knock it the rest of the way out.

As somebody that worked in construction and not firefighting. The first thing i thought was a Sthill saw or Grider to cut straight to the pins fist. Then it was mentioned at around 08:30. and so I was just wondering what the method is to start? Once you decide you're going for the hinges and not the lock side, do you start with the saw/Grinder or is the axe and Hallagan bar the first stop with the power tools being a secondary? As it looks like you're using a hell of a lot of energy braying the hell (quite successfully I might add) out of the hinges when 4 cuts to the pins and then prying the gap then bigger would look possibly easier and quicker? Of course i understand the need to know how to do this should any number or reasons for the saw to decide you're getting work out should occur. I was just wondering what the order of tools is? Again, this is just the observation of somebody who has done similar but for different reasons and we just do the easiest thing, nobodies' life is in danger, and we just don't like the effort of sledge hammers and chisels, so the grinder or saw would be the first port of call. Any replies are appreciated from people with more or deferent experiences. I'm just here because i think this kind of stuff is really cool to know and see how it works.

IMO That's a great way to go, except it is still true the irons won't run out of gas, drown out, or fail to start in a smoke filled enviornment... not to mention they're lighter!
@karlblake4596
@karlblake4596 3 года назад
What would the time difference be between sheering of the hinges to cutting them of with a gas saw?
@karlblake4596
@karlblake4596 3 года назад
What about if you had an emergency with a heavy duty door equipped with mortice deadlocks, after hinges have been removed would the door pry out from the jamb as easy?
@DALEGPEKEL
@DALEGPEKEL 3 года назад
Longer dead bolts take a little more effort - You pry away the hinge side of the door first and than once that clears the jamb you start work on the latch/lock side. I've removed doors with deadbolts that had an 1.5 inch throw using this technique - Not in an active fire situation, but during investigations. It's a viable technique to reduce or minimize damage when a key holder isn't available.

What is the reasoning behind starting with the top hinge? You're reasoning is sound, just wondering about the reason regarding the other opinion.
@DALEGPEKEL
@DALEGPEKEL 8 лет назад
The guys that promote starting with the top hinge say it allows smoke and heat to escape out the top of the door while you're working as the door can start to drop out of the frame as you work your way down the jamb - I'm not a fan as it can create an added flow path before you're ready to advance, not to mention it can compromise your position before you even gain entry.

After hearing about the Texas school massacre and the cops not being able to get in class because steel door was locked, how long would that take a firefighter to get through? Thanks
@DALEGPEKEL
@DALEGPEKEL 2 года назад
Depends on how the door was locked - Type of and number of locks as well as how the door is constructed (thickness of steel and type of edge seam on the latch side of the door) - An "average" steel door with a single dead bolt would take 30 seconds to a minute with a knowledgeable and properly equipped entry team. If it was just a panic bar or latch lock with a 1/2 inch throw, it could take less than 15 seconds. I've forced many steel doors alone in less than a minute using just a set of Irons (Flat Head axe and Halligan bar) and quite a few with just the Halligan. Most police depts or SWAT teams are not as proficient at forcing outward opening doors as they are inward - Inward doors can be forced with a battering ram breach technique as you often see in a residential setting - However exterior doors on commercial and assembly buildings are designed to swing in the direction of EXIT (or outward) and require a different set of techniques than forcing an inward opening door.
