Collapse occurs at (44:33) All firefighters made it safely out of the collapse under their own power - some members were stuck under the collapsed ceiling and needed the assistance of the FAST Truck and Rescue 1 to clear some debris to get them out. A good outcome in a very tense situation.

Thank you for sharing these videos. While I was in training for correctional deputy, we got to attend a private session the local FD put on for the class. We did the standard extinguisher drills using different types of fuels, materials, and retardants. It was one of the best extinguisher drills I’ve ever taken part of. The burn trailer was absolutely insane to be in with the flash overs they could create. Then we got the part of corrections personnel attempting to rescue inmates who could become trapped by flames/smoke. At that time, the state I was in was phasing out the use of SCBA systems due to the growing numbers of fatalities from officers going back in to save inmates. We still trained by wearing a full tank and mask setup, only the masks were blacked out. We had to traverse through a maze of cardboard boxes only high enough to crawl under, locate a 165 pound dummy, and drag it out. It was a two person team with the second person holding onto the first person’s pant leg. On the way out, the roles were reversed so the leader now followed the second guy while pulling the dummy. The tanks had a 30 minute run time, but we were only given 20 minutes, because most people start breathing harder in those situations. Only 3 out of 7 teams completed the course in the 20 minute time frame. When everything was done, the fire commander explained that the point of the test was to show that had this been the real deal, 12 people would most likely have died (8 officers and 4 inmates). The amount of courage it takes to run into a situation without knowing what you’re going to find is crazy high. Mad respect to everyone who does this.

This is a perfect example of how difficult it is to fight a fire deep inside a large building. If you notice there was little indication of any fire until they started to cut and break to locate the fire. Once they began that the fire, wherever it was got more combustion air and it appeared the fire took off.

Whoever was videoing and the person showing the flashlight on the marquee area sensed that something had changed. And it had. The cure has found an exit above the ceiling and below the floor above, which was the heavy black gray smoke pushing out if the left side where the firefighter had shown his flashlight on it. And they were right. Luckily it was the bottom floor. If a floor above or even further had dropped, circumstances would likely had been different.

I can't even imagine living above a restaurant now like so many New Yawkas do. You never know when something like this will happen. I wouldn't want to live in any high-rise building. We have a few here and IF something should happen like a fire, the ones living above it can't get out. Look at what happened with the World Trade Centers. But....if you want to live in NYC, that's about all that is available. We lived in a few when my father was with NYPD. Then we moved out to the Island when he was transferred. I was glad! :-) FDNY and NYPD - none better!! Excellent filming of this incident. Kudos to you!

You should have seen the East Village gas explosion in New York City. It looked like the Blitz hit it. When Car 4 arrived it was a Fourth Alarm fire. Soon as the dispatcher told him that he had to Fourth ALARM fire he ordered a SEVENTH ALARM with additional Tower Ladders and Engine Companies. It was a surround and drown operation.

Fire is so sneaky, FF's have to keep 360-degree vision to avoid being ambushed by it. Training is critical but being smart is critical too. How they care for each other is awesome, so much determination and love for their brothers. Just goes to show how dangerous a job it is, but it doesn't phase them, they continuously communicate and keep track of all FF's and that is what saved them all. Clap clap FDNY.

I find it interesting that the majority of these restaurant and store fires always start in the very early hours of the mornings when they're closed?
@azul8811
@azul8811 2 года назад
A small smoldering fire can go undetected and travels in concealed spaces and voids. Eventually an occupant on the floors above may smell or see a smoke condition and calls it in. These buildings are old and may have had renovations over the years, including multiple dropped ceilings in the stores. There are plenty of places for fire to “hide” and travel. In any event, the Fire Marshall will try and determine the cause & origin.

Great to see the hydrant IFO the fire was hooked up to and a 21/2 gate placed on 21/2 side of hydrant. That allows you to get more water without having to shut down hydrant. (I tried to preach that for most of my years, instead of just putting on a cap.) Wish lads would wear eye protection with those saws. One stray chip. So much simpler to pop the pins on those windows and drop them. Use the lights on the rigs to light up street sides.

As a child, I had basic fire-fighting training at a fire-station and later, further training in factories and nursing-homes. Of course I do NOT have the technical expertise and experiences of these brave firemen and I do NOT criticise the way they worked. But considering domestic coal-fired heating fire-places in houses have baskets to put the coals on so those fireplaces have a better draught, it made me wonder why these firemen needed to cut the shutters on the two food premises because I would have thought that would increase the draught feeding the dangerous fire they were fighting. thus making it worse. The video gave the impression that the Dragon restaurant was the source and the firemen were able to access it through an open door. I hope a fireman can explain that to me please. I am so pleased they all got out safely and thank them for their service.
@LinenAssociate
@LinenAssociate 2 года назад
You are missing a piece of the puzzle. The firefighters DIDN'T know where the fire was until about 40 minutes into the video. The only clues they had was smoke in the beginning. So they cut open the shutters to vent the smoke in the Dragon and opened the shutters on Dominos to explore for possible signs of fire intrusion.

Or more importantly you open up a big hole so you have an exit route and can effect a rapid rescue. The first door opened didn't allow any air in- that would be the job of door control on the Chinese restaurant door. Ditto the Pizza door. Fire fighter safety comes before preserving the restaurant. I'm not sure what they saw that caused them to break the windows on the Chinese restaurant- Perhaps there was a demising wall between the two rollup doors and they wanted an exit for firefighters.behing the middle roll up, Lack of a clear escape route on occupancies like this has contributed to the death of multiple fire fighters.

I always notice casual bystanders and, worse yet, people passing through these scenes. It seems to me there should be some equivalent or even a literal police line to protect the scene, numbskulls from getting in the firefighters' way, etc.These folks shouldn't have to maneuver around random civilians on sidewalks in order to perform an already dangerous, stressful job. I can't imagine myself walking down that sidewalk, carrying a sack of groceries, and saying to myself "yeah I'll just walk through here, no biggie"🙄

Yea I was surprised by that as well. Back here if there was a fire like that we would have been arrested or yelled at to leave.

In London (UK) the police stop all traffic and pedestrians from walking through the fire ground and from experience it can be annoying when 'joy public' is walking through totally oblivious to what is happening.

Great work. One question. In several shots and at least 47:24 there's this basket at the end of the boom with flashing ligths. How do those flashers help firefighters to do their job? It must be like going in to a disco with strobes...

So, does the main Chief work some of these fires or does he just serve administration purposes only? I am genuinely curious.

The size and complexity of the operation determine the levels of Command that respond. There is a Staff Chief assigned as the Citywide Tour Commander each tour and I believe he responds upon the transmission of the 3rd alarm. At this fire the Citywide Tour Commander was at the Command Post. But to answer your question. The Chief of Department does respond to certain fires. Tragically, the COD was killed on 9/11 while in command.

It seems that the fire is running ahead of the FF,s and they can’t catch up with it.

That's why it's not good to live in a building where restaurants are on the first floor?around the corner from me on Lexington Ave between 100th & 101st there's nothing but restaurants a whole row of them and on top of them are 5 story buildings if one of those restaurants catch fire it's going be nothing but pure hell around that block if the fire department doesn't get ahead of it in time..
