In an attempt to cancel Firefly, certain FOX execs waited until the last second on a Friday to reject the "Serenity" Pilot. This gave Joss Whedon and Tim Minear only the weekend to write and submit "The Train Job" first thing that following Monday morning. If they failed at submitting on time -- The Pilot would have been the end of Firefly due to a "breach of contract".

Glad you are enjoying my favorite series. About Jayne dropping on the train… The people on the train would not see the ship above because there are no windows in the roof of the train. This was the first episode to actually air and I was unsure about it till the end where Mal kicks the guy into the engine. The convention for shows at the time was that the heroes did not just murder people like that even if it was the prudent thing to do. On another adventure show, the guy would be a reoccurring villain that Mal would fight over and over again till a season finale. Firefly did the pragmatic thing and had Mal get rid of an insane man who is a deadly threat to Mal and the crew.
@ALG3228
@ALG3228 Месяц назад
And then doubles down on taking the practical, if brutal, route when he shoots the fed agent in the (real) first episode. (Reavers are coming, I don't have time for your nonsense!) Did you see it when it aired? I only came across it later, but it's hard to imagine the experience of seeing it the way it aired originally. To be fair, a lot of reactors comment on how much information there is in the double episode, and a lot of them have trouble tracking all the characters and world-building. (It's fun to watch people's confusion when it starts with the war, especially if they know it's a space-cowboy show. Lol!) It's definitely a show to re-watch and catch all the things you missed the first time around.
@highlander31527

@@ALG3228 In all fairness, the fed in the first episode HAD shot Kaylee. And was threatening to shoot someone else when Mal came on board. Seems like if you cross Mal more than once causing harm to his crew, the second time is likely to be fatal.

I'm still skeptical. Air pressure at those speeds is pretty high, he could've easily gone sailing off. The ship and train had constant propulsion to push through. But, train heist, so i let it slide. @startingQB

I half agree with that. I think Jayne is judging Mal by past actions but not understanding the context/reasoning behind the decision. Like stealing the cargo without asking what it is. Because the crew needed money. But he wasn't there to see Mal when he found out it was medicine. So when Mal decided to return the cargo, Jayne was actually confused

Welcome to the first aired episode. Fox was unhappy with the actual pilot "Serenity". Thought it was slow. Wanted to jump right into the action. Didn't think it'd hold the attention of their perceived audience for 2 hrs. Gave Joss and Tim the weekend to come up with the second pilot, "The Train Job". The intended pilot, "Serenity", was the final episode that aired, after it was announced that Firefly had been officially canceled. Wasn't fully hooked myself until Crow went through the engine. Up until that point, the series more ordinary than I was expecting. Gregg Henry is one of those actors who's been in lots of series/movies. He and Nathan Fillion reunited for the James Gunn movie "Slither", a sci-fi, horror, comedy, B-movie homage that received generally favorable reviews though it flopped at the box office. (Plenty of scenes in it to react to.) He also has a small role in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. And he guest starred for an episode on two other series that Nathan Fillion has featured in (since Firefly): Castle and The Rookie.

Mal getting it from the guy in the bar at the start was a great scene when the Alliance guy turns and gets it in the kisser from Zoe full on. It was quite amazing that Whedon wrote this episode over the course of a couple of days, and it turned out to be a really good episode. Mal of course does what he does, but when it comes to it we seem to know he will do the right thing to help others. A creepy ending when they say do we think we flew millions of miles for some band aids, and they show the pic of Reaver who they are really after. Think that the first episode was probably better, but this is great considering how quickly it had to be put together.
@ALG3228

Idk, I don't think you're right about Mal keeping turning in River, in his back pocket, so to speak. I think once they joined his crew, they became HIS crew. In many ways, he is still the Sargent, like Badger says. Like with returning the medicine, it's part of Mal's "code." In the army, you don't choose the people under your command, the people you get are the people you get, and they are your 'crew.' So I question whether it's in Mal's head that he will use River as a bargaining chip. But I think you're right about Jayne looking out for #1. Keeping her around to get money out of it would definitely be what Jayne would do. I think you're bang on with his limited loyalty but looking out for himself first and foremost (i.e. I didn't turn on you because the money wasn't good enough this time around). And I think Mal knows exactly who Jayne is. He's the muscle, he's a good shot, he's useful and part of what comes along with that is keeping track of if he will betray you while looking out for himself. The first episode did a good job of setting that up. I'm really enjoying your reviews! Also, a little clue about what River is saying (2x2, hands of blue) - go back and rewatch the end of this episode again. ;)

The war between the Alliance & the Independents is very much inspired by the American Civil War & the Independents (the side Mal & Zoe fought for) are based on the South (the Confederacy). That is to say, the Ku Klux Klan guys. Mal & Zoe fought on the same side as racists & slavers. This isn't a cut & dried, "good guys & bad guys" situation. A lot of good people on both sides & a lot of bad people on both sides.
@ALG3228
@ALG3228 Месяц назад
Wow, that's a stretch. He was inspired by a novel about the Battle of Gettysburg, but that doesn't mean it's based on the Civil War. Yes, they want to be independent (or breakaway) and have self-determination but it's a giant leap to say that it is somehow aligned with slavery in the sense of the Confederacy or Ku Klux Klan in our real history. It's heavily based on Western tropes but it inverts the idea that usually the law represent the good guys. Whedon has likened the Alliance to the US government in the sense of the possibility of a shining democracy, but also to be meddling like entering the Vietnam War when we didn't really have a right to. Mal et al are markedly against the slavery they see with Badger and in Shindig. They just don't want to be regulated (the sense of the Wild West). I agree with the moral ambiguity on both sides, but not because it's based on our history in any literal sense. The outer planets have overt crime (including slavery in some cases, or kidnapping, or petty theft, mobsters like Niska, etc.) sometimes done by people who have a moral code and compassion as well as good guys like the Sheriff (who arrests people, but shares his cigarette with someone behind bars and doesn't arrest Mal when the medicine is returned). While the Alliance has moral ambiguity/turpitude in the way it both cares about helping a transport ship in distress (the Cry Baby, and Bushwacked), and cares for some in spectacular style but not at all for others, but also forces people to comply, and ignores suffering unless it impacts the Alliance's interests (not caring about the medicine being stolen and experimenting on children for it's own ends).

Geishas aren't prostitutes, that's a common misconception. I think that a more suitable comparison is to the hetaira of Ancient Greece. The Greek word even means "companion".

Since you are a Buffy fan, let's talk the idiotic anti-Joss Whedon claim. Let's assume they are true, both versions you may hear. 1) He made a woman writer cry.. A writer came up witha stupid idea and he yelled at them. So what? Is the point that women are too delicate for the job?:) 2) Casting couch for minor bits. Is the actress not a consenting adult? The actresses had no say and did not willingly offer to do "anything" while fluttering their eyelashes for the part, right? :)

1) That's not professional, no matter how brilliant of a TV writer/producer you may be. 2) The casting couch aspect, since the "Me Too" movement sprung up, is looked down upon nowadays. If an actress doesn't get a part because she didn't slept with a producer, it's the producer's fault. The troubles of JW are all on him because he didn't bother to curb his worst tendencies. So what if he had a overly feminist mother and an elitist father? So what if he didn't "get some" while attending an ALL BOYS boarding school in the UK? We all have baggage, but not all of us make it an excuse to be jerks while attaching us to a social issue like feminism. So yeah. I'm glad he's not working because he came off as an entitled asshole and talent shouldn't be hide that.

Not to put words in his mouth, but it seems the original poster might be an apologist for Harvey Weinstein types. Not a good look in 2024.

No one has said that what he did was illegal. He’s just an asshole & a creepy asshole at that & consenting adults are now choosing not to work with him any longer.

Wow, this is gross. And sexist. And misogynistic. It ignores the power dynamics involved between a multi-show showrunner/producer and unknown actresses or even female writers who have less power. You act and get paid, no one should have to give up bodily autonomy to get work. That is not a consenting arrangement. My understanding is that not only did it happen, but it was the ongoing nature of this behavior that made it especially bad. Even some of the male actors have talked about the way he bullied them and others on set. The abuses of men in power in Hollywood are well documented at this point (you might remember that Harvey Weinstein is in prison - and yes was convicted after the original trial was overturned) and the fact that Whedon hasn't really worked in the industry since he was outed should give you some clue.

@@ALG3228 Thank you. I'm sick and tired of nitwits like the OP defending a hypocrite. Despite his quirky word play, they are better writers/producers in the entertainment industry, past and present, who are better at dealing with social issues than Whedon. He was more invested in "getting some" while having a chip on his shoulder. It's a miracle he got work done, but he made more enemies than friends while doing it.

Mal imposes his leadership because it is his nature and the crew knows how competent he is. Zoe, who is a very skilled and capable warrior and yet is the most loyal to Mal of all, that tells you a lot about what kind of person Mal is. He was like a hero among his people in the war, he is skilled with any firearm, he is stoic and very clever at planning strategies or improvising. His rudeness with some of the crew is like a mask that he puts on to hide his thoughts or intentions, after the war he lost faith in humanity or God. So to protect his loved ones he doesn't trust those who are outside his close circle and he remains distant at least until he's sure he knows that person well enough.

He also "imposes his leadership" because he is the captain of the ship, and that's just the way it is. It is not a democracy.

@@MrCzerillo Obviously, I only explained why the crew did not revolt against the captain. It's not just because he's the captain, it's because his first mate "Zoe" is loyal to him and also Mal's reputation gives him authority.

Should let Dakara find this out for herself. That's the fun of this show.
