Note that River says "my brother IS a trauma surgeon in Capitol City..." -clearly placing these before Simon breaks her out of the institute. This is when she's writing coded pleas for help in her letters (see Safe). I love these clips; they really give you a sense of how thoroughly they broke River, and Summer Glau does a terrific acting job!
Simon said his family heard about this "Program" in the first episode. This is the program his parents put her in. Simon eventually breaks her out after these events. Then they end up on serenity at the start of the series.
Well, Simon has her broken out. In the pilot, he said that he was contacted by people who told him that they could get her out and get her to Persephone for him to pick up.
It might be a little early to suggest this but... In 2007-2008 there was a writers strike in Hollywood. This strike produced some good and bad things. The bad was that the writers strike sparked an avalanche of "reality" TV shows. The good is that it gave Joss Whedon some free time to have some fun. Joss, Jed, and Zach Whedon wrote, scored, and filmed a little show called "Doctor Horrible's sing-along blog". It was filmed in 6 days and released for free on the internet in 3 acts of 15 minutes each. Dr. Horrible is played by Neil Patrick Harris, Captain Hammer is played by Firefly's Nathan Fillion. The 45 minute show scores 8.5/10 on IMDB and has 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. Please, please do a reaction to "Doctor Horrible's sing-along blog".
Interesting side note, Whedon says he made more money from Dr. Horrible than he did from the Avengers. They wrote a script and music for a sequel but the strike ended and they all had to go back to work. ;)
Re timeline, yes the River Tam sessions occur before the time Simon breaks her out of the Academy. Side note: I had a photo-op with Summer and I took it with me offering her a fountain pen. Later, I had a chance to have her autograph it with, "I'll need to write it down . . ." 😉
You are correct. This is what River went through before Simon rescued her, thus it's pre-series. It's not really spoilery, but imo not something you'd want to watch before War Stories. Love the Nathan Fillion blooper scene! So hilarious. You know they must have had some good times filming this show.
Ok just watched. The blooper was hella funny. As for the River Tam Sessions ... in my opinion you watched the correct one. (There are 2 ... one of them shows the sessions in order. This one starts with the last, then goes back to the first and moves onwards.) At any rate, EVERY TIME I have watched this it just breaks my heart what the Alliance did to River. Great Reaction again Rob & Trin
I've never seen that bloopers scene with Nathan before. It's so perfectly on character for him. Not the character Mal but Nathan Fillion's character as a person.
YES!!! I am always conflicted with watching these before Serenity ... however, its not spoilers so alll good. Gonna watch your reaction then get back to commenting :) ... I have always loved the River Tam Sessions.
These 'River Tam Sessions' take place before the beginning of the series itself, and at the beginning of the motion picture, we see a flashback of Simon getting River out of there. That's why they're on the run during the series. Simon literally gave up everything. His practice. His lifestyle. His relationship with his parents. A luxurious future. The deal his father made with The Alliance was if he gave up River to The Blue Sun corporation, then Simon would be guaranteed a secure and stable future. Simon of course wasn't consulted. Some flashbacks and other scenes about this are detailed in episodes like "Safe" and "Ariel."
Dr. Mathias is an unnamed character in the first part of the movie; you'll see. Also, that blooper and the "trap" blooper in the movie is amongst my favorites ever; you'll see.
The River Tam sessions were before the series began. There are lots of bloopers out there. My favorite is the introduction scene of Wash in OUT OF GAS. Nathan and Gina were wearing a mustache as well. After the movie, you should watch the Firefly documentary "Done the Impossible". It is a documentary about how the fans came together and petition for the show and the movie. I am not sure it is a show to react to, but I feel you will find it interesting. Titan books has put out a series of Firefly books. They were intended to be after the show ended and before the movie. I am not through them all yet, but I am enjoying the one I have completed.
So, when you finish the movie you guys need to search for The Life of Shepherd Book. There are two videos; different but the same story. There is also a video where a Chinese actress watches clips and tries to translate the Chinese dialogue into English. It's pretty cool. Cheers
I don't think it would be a spoiler to say the Doctor Mathias that's mentioned in the River Tam Sessions actually appears in the movie. It's not a big part, but he helps to explain what they did to River for audiences who hadn't seen the TV show.
That blooper is good. There is at least one compilation of bloopers available on RU-vid that contains some better ones. but I think they are mostly from the movie so you'll have to wait to watch them.
13:09 This is evidence that the show was suppose to be more than 1 season. Timeline wise it is before Simon gets her out. But we was suppose to see it in a series of flashbacks in season 2 or 3.
I know I'm incredibly late to the Firefly reactions that you both filmed - I've literally just binged the entire playlist. Thank you. Thank you for loving it, thank you for laughing, crying, and being shocked at the cancellation with us. I'm certain that my fellow Browncoats have given you 'the tea' about the plans Joss had, the longer term plot arcs he had in mind, and various other bits of show knowledge that has dropped over the years at comic-cons, interviews, and panels. I'll work through the Sherlock playlists next, and add a recommendation if I could. Battlestar Galactica (the 2005 reboot), beginning with the mini-series. It's 4 seasons, 3 are quite long, one was shortened by a writers strike. The mini-series was outstanding, and saw the show get picked up. Season 1 won a Peabody Award, and deserved it. Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonald anchor the show with mind-bogglingly fabulous performances, and the (at the time) unknown youngsters that surround them clearly learned a great deal! Of note is the fact that Richard Hatch returned (he played the OG character of Apollo), to play a character written specifically for him if he agreed to it. He did, and it was simply ... wonderful. To close - I'm super happy to have (finally - better late than never right?) discovered your channel, and look forward to more. Cheers
I have watched this series a couple dozen times and never seen the River Tam Session, they confirm a lot of what we already know but still, really well acted.
So glad you saw The River Tam Sessions in release order. Some may argue it isn't important and chronological order is fine. I disagree because seeing the doctor pull a pen out of his neck in the beginning sets up the story flow of the sessions. They were meant to be viewed right before the movie. NO SPOILERS: The movie does an amazing job of pulling double duty. Not only is it written for Firefly fans to enjoy, but it can also be enjoyed by those who have never watched the series. With that said, watching the series first is by far the best way to go for fans.
Speaking of horror movies, I hope you react at some point to Cabin in the Woods. It's made by the same guy who made Firefly, and it's a great movie you'll enjoy more than you expect to.
ahh a very nice addition to the adventure.... Over the years since I finished watching Firefly and Serenity, I found myself searching RU-vid for "Firefly Panels" at various conventions. I could watch them for hours and hours. The stories they tell, the behind the scenes stories. Oh man, it's so good. I highly recommend checking out some Firefly Panels. I don't know if makes for a good reaction video, but it soothes my Browncoat soul....
Mal (Nathan) does that too in one episode of Castle, I dont recall wich one (number and season), but was about an actor who got murdered and the director of the movie he was making start to film everything on the police station to make a documentary of the death investigation... and in a scene he does that. I think he gets down on ground and craw to the other places whitout being seem by the camera, I not sure, but its funny... On Castle he does that and also de detective woman who works with him does that also, while the camera is interviwing the captain, is like Nathan pass behind captain from left to right.. and again from left to right.. and again from left to right.... it was funny. The River Files was a promo they made with Summer Glau and Josh Weldon (the creator) only, they websode those 4 videos and sent to internet to make the promotion of the movie or the series, I dont recall wich one. Probably like you said, after series to promo the movie.
I only learned about the River Tam sessions in the last few months, and when I watched them I didn’t really think they added anything that wasn’t implied by the show. The series made it clear that she’d been lobotomised, and we saw how messed up she was. If anything, the only additional piece of information was that she had been given murder missions, but we knew from War Stories that she could handle a gun and was capable of homicide. So I didn’t really think these pre-movie teasers were necessary, and they were clearly shot like a Japanese horror movie, which gives the wrong impression if someone thinks Firefly is going to be like that. Bushwacked was the only episode that had cleat horror vibes. As for the blooper, Nathan was brilliant. They all must have had a blast on set because of his shenanigans in particular. I’m looking forward to you both enjoying the full blooper reel when the movie is done.
Actually, she was *not* lobotomized. What Simon says in "Ariel" is that a lobotomy to correct brain damage is the only reason he knows of to cut into someone's brain, and he's not aware of any reason to cut into a healthy brain - but they had gone in and stripped her amygdala, again and again and again. A lobotomy affects the pre-frontal cortex, not the amygdala.
I waited to send that funny outtake until you had seen "The Message," so it would be fresh from just seeing that particular episode. My favorite part is Alan's surprise reaction - Ha! It's as if he's saying, "How in the world ..........?" - So, here are a couple more clips you will surely enjoy ..... they're both with Nathan and Morena (even though the interview is promoting the movie, there are no spoiler alerts). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bqUIBGoDRGA.html and ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HcTlAluw8XE.html
There's a really dark one in Serenity that's absolutely hilarious and he'd obviously spent a bunch of time preplanning that he similarly executes with a completely straight face - obviously don't go looking for it now because spoilers but on to remember..
Hey Rob and Trin...you have not actually finished the series yet. There are 2 more episodes, Episode 13 "Heart of Gold" and episode 14 "Objects in Space."
If you want (/need after watching R. Tam Sessions) a fun bloomer reel here's a link to an extended one; ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1mve-E23trk.html
Nathan Fillion has no respect for the dead. He'd probably be a cut-up at his own funeral. Summer Glau is wonderful in everything I've seen her in, but, at the same time, I'm hoping that her career's progressing beyond playing broken people. I'd much rather see her happy.
Well personally, I think you made a huge, even EPIC mistake ...not on the Nathan Fillion clip but on the RTS. It's just MY opinion, but knowing any more about the subject BEFORE the movie IS a spoiler, and removes a lot of the mystique. It will affect your next 2 episodes as well. Whoever told you to do this is either sick, sadistic or an idiot. They are suggesting this because THEY liked the sessions, but they already know the series and movie, so NOW they think they are cool to watch. However, these sessions were NOT available when the series was out. Additionally, the movie came out (i.e. released) on September 30th, 2005, although there was an earlier screening for the Edinburgh International Film Festival on August 22nd, 2005, but the River Tam Sessions weren't released onto the Internet until between August 16, 2005 and September 5, 2005, so certainly after the series (2002) had ended. I doubt if anyone really knew about them or that they were meant to be released at all, especially for the movie, as that would have again, spoiled some of the very things they were going to expose in the movie. No, this was a BAD idea. You are SUPPOSE to be guessing throughout the series, always wondering what happened, which allowed them to sprinkle in little bits and pieces throughout the 1st season. Instead, you are seeing some of River's abilities long before you should.
Can you please end this faster no offense to this show and the fans , but I just wish you put 2-3 walking dead reactions every week , there are like 100s of amazing moments I want to see your reactions too. Not just that , your reactions are getting amazing response also
I would never rush TWD for anything with more views so ofc I will not rush Firefly either. Really want people to know that if we enjoy something (just like TWD) we will commit to it and do all the content we possible can. We will be on 2 episodes a week before you know it 😊😊
@@Chyll07 okay sorry dude , I have never even heard about this show , firefly or whatever it is okay, I am pretty sure it's not on any of the streaming services in my country. Never heard about nor it has any famous actor so don't care, but i don't mean offense to people who like it
