Firewire Machado Seaside Review: Hype or Holy Grail?

I finally got my hands on the iconic Firewire Machado Seaside! But at 5'9" and 37 litres, this board was a bit bigger than I usually ride. Was I in for a disappointing experience? Quite the opposite!
In this video, I share my first impressions of the Seaside and highlight its surprising performance. I also discuss why this board could be a game-changer for bigger guys like my friend Pedro, who want to downsize from their mid-lengths.
Whether you're a seasoned pro or a weekend warrior, if you're curious about the Machado Seaside, this video is for you!
This review features a surfboard generously provided by Surfers Lab in Sagres for a three-day loan. The review is not influenced by the loan, and Surfers Lab didn't even ask for a mention in the video. Thank you for the Support🙏 🤙 www.surferslab...

Nice review Mike, really enjoyed it. I tested the Seaside from 5'2 all the way up to 6'0, and that board through the scale is so user friendly it's really remarkable. I'm only 145lbs (66kg roughly) and even the 6'0 version I rode was super easy to control. I got a really good off the lip on a shoulder high wave. Obviously it goes way better closer to a proper size but it just scales so well. I tell people it is the most user friendly board out there. I gave mine away to a friend who was struggling with all her boards, she absolutely loves it. I hope firewire never gets rid of this model. That would be a tragedy for sure.

@@ThomyeSurfs Thanks 🙏Wow, impressive, isn't it that you could chuck the 6.0 around? It surprised me that it was so good in the lip, as I had the impression that it wouldn't be. I want one😂 but I need to sell some😂🤙 That was super kind to give yours away🙌

@@tezf6883 I had a really good surf on the Cado the other day! I preferred the way I could approach the lip on the Seaside, and it feels more predictable. 🤙

Noooooooo!!!! Don’t do it!!!! Until you try the Too Fish… Haha 😅 I had the SeaSide. I sold it. It Rips! It Shreds! It’s Predictable Surfing!!! But the Freedom you get on a Too Fish is so much more FLOW, SPEED and FUN. I hope you get to try one soon 🤙🏽. Another GREAT VIDEO BRO 😎 🏄🏽‍♂️

Thanks, Kyle 🙏, I can't buy more boards at the mo. Not until I have sold some, luckily, the universe helped me out in the form of a super kind Surf Shop🤙 they are not even bothered if I mention them in the reviews🙏 I have a FRK swallow to try. It looks super high-performance should be interesting; let's see if I can get it going😀🤙

Epic! You’re riding that awesome. I rode the 6’1 Vokcanic in longboard waves and it was super fun. That size looks perfect for you. I think only problem oversized is it bobs hardcore when your sitting on it lol but when up and riding feels good - was stoked - I had same fins too. I bet with the album/nvs twins it be sick too.

That went surprisingly well for you. I’d expect the 5’5”-5’6” to be your sweet spot though. I’d get 5’6” or 5’7” personally.
@surfingtipsandtricks
@surfingtipsandtricks 11 дней назад
That's right, oversized, but it went well; I wouldn't buy the 5’9 for myself; on the first day, it was great because there was a lot of paddling and the waves were bigger, I felt the extra volume on day 2, but still surfed very well 🤙
@trestlesrocks
@trestlesrocks 11 дней назад
@@surfingtipsandtricks certain boards are so user friendly that it’s not even bad to be oversized. What you lose in some ways you gain in others. If the fun factor is there you’re winning.
@surfingtipsandtricks
@surfingtipsandtricks 11 дней назад
@@trestlesrocks I have had a string of injuries and after surfing the Seaside II definitely think that I maybe need to consider upping my volume a little. 34L maybe. The Revo I bought is 31L and it just isn't fun for me to paddle. Which is pointless as we spend most of our time paddling😂
@Craig-t2g
@Craig-t2g 11 дней назад
@@surfingtipsandtricks Its interesting that the smaller (more correctly sized sizes) actually paddle and feel better. ie my 5'5 Too Fish paddles better and chips in better than my 5'8 Seaside did (i am a it bigger than you at 81 kgs). I think because the bigger sizes just get bucked around a bit in chop, and feel bit too on top of the water.

@@surfingtipsandtricks big facts!! I used to surf 29-30 liters all through my 20’s and most of my 30’s at a weight range of 185-195lbs. It was only a few years ago after some time out of the water because of starting a family that I started pushing my volume up into the 32-34 range and it was all gains. Now anything much above that does start to feel a bit corky in high performance boards. But now that I’m dabbling in these alternative shapes who knows. I want to try a mashup as a higher performance compliment to my Cado. Thinking the 5’8”(my typical volume) or 5’9”(a little above), but still really uncertain having not tried one before.

Was waiting for this one! Thank you! I have an oversized Seaside, too (5’7, which is 3l-4l more than my go-to short board). I find it easy to paddle for sure, but slower to turn and sometimes harder to control. Any advice?
@surfingtipsandtricks
@surfingtipsandtricks 10 дней назад
I know what you mean. If you oversize a board, it's inevitable that it'll be slower to turn and harder to control. But I found that it would turn surprisingly quickly if my foot was right on the tail. 🤙
@stevenyao8660
@stevenyao8660 10 дней назад
@@surfingtipsandtricks Thanks for reply! I also find that although it has faster planning speed than regular shortboards, the first 2-3 pumps could be harder and respond slower. So if I need instant 2-3 pumps to get to the next section(unstable beach break), it sometimes stuck. Seems no problem for you in the video though.
@surfingtipsandtricks
@surfingtipsandtricks 10 дней назад
@@stevenyao8660 Yes, I agree. I think that might also be the oversizing. When I surfed the Cado a few days before at @5’6”, it didn't have that resistance on take-off. I think that in the clips (Seaside), some starts are better than others. I feel the resistance that you are talking about. There is a temptation to try to force those boards. If you watch Rob, he never seems to have to pump or force the board; obviously, the waves are better. For me, it felt like I was surfing a 7’ midlength compressed into a fun little rocket🚀 It is tough to get the volume combination right. There has to be some trade offs🤙

I’d advise your mate Pedro to stick with his mid length for a few more years. Length of board doesn’t matter too much for doing turns, even mid lengths turn well, but experience and competency are way more important factors.

@surfingtipsandtricks 11 дней назад
Thanks, Jason, I understand what you are saying, but Pedro has been surfing for over ten years. He has had a string of injuries, including back surgery just months ago, and is just getting back into his Grove. His normal board is a 6’4" shortboard thruster. He wants something to surf in small waves. I was pushing him towards the Sweet potato, but he's not keen. The day of those clips, It looked much better than it was. I was struggling to get going on my Evo. He was doing good on those micro weak waves. I think he would have real fun on the Seaside 6.0🙏🤙 P.s He surfs big Madeira, scary waves🙌
