The Marie H. Katzenbach School for the Deaf is a unique educational environment for students in New Jersey. Although the school has been here since 1883, many people might not know a lot about us. A schoolwide video was the perfect answer to promote everything Katzenbach has to offer. As we created the storyboard for the video’s concept, we wanted to show all aspects of our school and what makes it so accessible for New Jersey’s deaf and hard-of-hearing students. We chose the Katy Perry song “Firework” because it reflects our belief that each and every student has the ability to shine in the Katzenbach family.
As the video opens, an elementary school student arrives at Katzenbach for the first time where she is greeted by a Security Guard who signs, “Good morning” to her. An important thing to mention about Katzenbach is that ALL staff know or are learning American Sign Language. Students have the ability to communicate with everyone on campus from academic staff to cafeteria workers, maintenance, and even housekeeping. The video takes the viewer around our campus showcasing a day in the life of a Katzenbach student as they navigate through our academic and vocational programs, as well as our extracurricular, and residential activities. It concludes with a collaborative celebration of staff and students, hand-in-hand, representing what a close knit family we are at MKSD!
After a busy two years, the video premiered at our ASL-English Bilingual Celebration on Oct 12, 2017. The video shows that Katzenbach is truly the least restrictive environment for deaf and hard of hearing students as they have total access to two languages in all aspects of their education. Our hope is for others to learn and spread the word that Katzenbach provides an exceptional education for students who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, and multiply disabled.
