In the time period this ship was from this is actually a very respectable armament

The cannons are only meant to scare off small pirates, not to fight off navy ships

most VOC vessels also had a crew's worth of armed men + we had a tactic to if all seems lost to hit our powder stores with a torch or other flame to send the entire ship to the locker

To work on the swedish ship you have to have a nautical education of some kind. or you can pay to be onboard for one part of the trip

@@ezekielx5 if by amazing you mean being herded on a ship with hundreds of others with no personal space, working around the clock, receiving draconic punishments for the smallest offenses like not working hard enough for even a few minutes, horrible water and food all whilst being severely malnourished at the best of times not even getting into what worse times during battle and similar looked like then sure, amazing experience.

tatum ergo not a fluyt, this was classed as an east-indiaman. Fluyts were smaller, less armed, had a larger hold and were mainly used for trade in the north, while these were used for spice trade.

@@Bear-cp9yx Original plans? They didn't use plans back in those days. But the VOC did have charters specifying certain characteristics that their ships had to have. To make this reconstruction of the Batavia (the word reconstruction is preferred because making a replica is impossible, we don't have enough exact info about the orginal), the remains of the original wreck were studied in so far as they survived. No images/paintings of the original Batavia exist, so for the decoration and some other aspects they had to guess. They did look at contemporary vessels for inspiration of course, including the Swedish Wasa ship, which survived in almost perfect condition and was built by Dutch shipbuilders.
