I have been lucky enough to do this, together with my late father at Nene Valley Railway.When my dad was driving he blew the whistle at every cow we passed!Oh happy days ❤
I came back from the Model Engineer Exhibition and I just had to order another set of plans...no choice but to go for an old favorite the Black Five. And joy of joys not the valve gear but on line they on offer at quite a reduction. Met my dear wife on line, no not the Mid Hants, South Devon, Severn Valley or West Somerset but Dating China!!! Now I can say "Isnt everything made in China these days!!!" David in Reading half way between Didcot and Alton!
I know you posted quite a while ago, but for me it just kinda looked like he threw the coal in at the same speed and location, didn't see really see him go for the sides or anything like it. Although, i cant tell, i'm not a fireman myself (even though it'd be fun to learn). Are you able to elaborate how you can see him firing even?
@@julius6889 as for the firing he would be putting each shovel full in a different place as you want an even fire all around the grate not just a pile in the middle. But as its a Black Five he is letting the coal run down to the front as they have a slanted firebox. Hope this helps
Maybe a silly question but what is the point of the baffle that can be flipped in and out of the fire box opening if the fireman controls the draft with the door opening and grate?
The baffle is a way of controlling the secondary air through the firehole door, the other way is using the doors. You can't fire through doors that are cracked open but you can fire over the top of the baffle plate.

Firing over the flap should be done at speed. Starting off the back corners should be filled with a few down each side and the front. With the cost and scarcity of coal in 2021/22 you can only use as little as possible to get the job done, so it doesn't apply now.
Nate Butler probably because we’re driving with just a keyboard and a mouse. I would think it’s a completely different experience when you’re driving and firing the real deal.
Try the version by Bossman Games. It's much more realistic. Still a breeze if you know what you're doing, but it takes more thought and foresight to drive and especially to fire. Still steams good though!
as a fireman who also plays train sim i can confirm it is 100 times easier , theres a lot too firing that would just be to complex to develop into a game. not to mention the power you would need out of a CPU, some of the advanced locos definitely get it a lot better but its still not the same
Nice! This may sound stupid but I will ask anyway. What is the main big handle in the middle for and the control taps left and right and the little rotating one on the lower left and the ones above please.
So like at 34 seconds on the video, the 3 brass taps. From Top right to left is the steam heating valve, then the Live injector steam valve, last one being the exhaust injector steam valve. The brass knob in the middle of the cab under the regulator is the blower. The handle with the wooden part next to the AWS box is the sanding lever. The handle at the bottom left of the regulator is the brake valve and up and left from there are two more controls. The big brass dial is the large brake ejector and the smaller one with the wooden handle is the small brake ejector
