There is nothing more precious for a surgeon than to see a smile on the face of their patients after the surgery. Especially when prior to the surgery, they were convinced that after the anesthesia wore off they would be in terrible pain. But in the real scenario, they are not only happy due to the absence of pain, they are happy with the strength they can feel at their operated hip joint.
The pain from Avascular Necrosis (AVN) is absolutely gone, and it is a pleasant surprise of the highest degree for our patients, as AVN often stops them from doing day-to-day activities. This is the first thing we hear from our patients after the surgery. Knowing that they can leave AVN behind and move on in life really makes our patients happy.
But what do we achieve in the first 24 hours of surgery?
First of all, the patient’s toe movements are tested to check if the sciatic nerves are all alright and unaffected by surgery.
Secondly, patients are allowed to bend their knee and hip as much as they can, after the surgery.
Thirdly, we allow our patients to take side turns while lying down. It not only helps their comfort but also makes them more confident in their movement.
Fourthly, we also instruct our team to help the patients walk, as soon as their strength is back. In some rare cases, when the patient’s bone strength is strong, we even allow them to walk without a walker. But we make sure every patient is walking in the first 24 hours of surgery.
Fifthly, patients are also encouraged to sit on chairs and independently stand up from the chairs. This helps them to use toilets independently.
So to sum it up, the first 24 hours after surgery is not full of pain. It is full of happiness and smiles.
