This lady Taelor In stl area has ripped off many venues and has even taken venues planners away from legit hard working people. She scammed another band here and trys to go to other areas across Midwest and scams many bands.
Rick Beato co-wrote a hit song that had like 38 million plays and he received a royalty check for $300!!!! Back in the day you could have sent your children to college and retired a rich man. Today the shysters get the gold and the creators get the shaft!
@@mistermusic140 I'm glad my bands have always done well on tshirt sales cus one shirt that you print yourself is equal to over a million streams apparently.
I've been writing songs for 50+ years. My advice to all songwriters is to copyright every song you create. Keep the demos and anything related to the creation of your songs . Don't let the crooks steal your work !!!
Every song is copyrighted the moment its put into a fixed format each in recording form, lyric form, etc. There is no registration or legal filing that has to be made. FIXED FORMAT being the key
@blltz4410 technically yes, but legally speaking you still should always copyright your work thru official registration. That's how you legally prove you are the original copyright owner.
That just enables one to bring suit. The copyright holder still has to sue the offender and have the financial resources to do it. The entire system has to change.
@@neoboomernostalgiacore y'all got a really good sound....hope things work out for you guy's. This is similar too Napster in a lot of way's. Lar's from Metallica got PO'd and led the charge; speaking out against people stealing what they worked hard for! Cudo's to him! Artist put a lot of time, money, and dedication into song writing. Yes, they deserve to get paid handsomely for their efforts!!!!
I just clicked on this video because I love music and this band is really good . And I can understand why they are POd about someone stealing their songs ! And I hope whoever did this has to pay every dime they made back to these boys with interest.
I just checked and Spotify removed Marico Charlotte I think. Actually, Old Capital Square Dance Club is now the first result when you search for Marico Charlotte (the rip off artist)! They did the right thing.
I don't think Spotify is really capitalizing on anything here. They lose money when paying a fake musician. They don't gain anything. It would be in their best interest to find ways to prevent this from happening.
I can sympathize... as a voice actor, someone stole my voice and fed it into AI and is now using it on their youtube channel with thousands of subscribers and views. RU-vid did nothing about it and continues to ignore it even though its clearly me.
First off I want to say thank you to everybody who tuned in for this story. Whether or not you like my band is irrelevant. I’m actually enjoying the negative stuff more than the positive. Just be warned you’ll probably end up in song lyrics. So hate away. I love you and nothing you say or do will change that. 🤖 🤖
Yeah man. You’re the first to compare a heart to gold in 2024…… I’ve never heard a ding shout heartache either. Or beer or pickup trucks. So innovative I first heard country sings like this last month. I’m retardrd
@@Heretic_Hero it is crazy, but perhaps even crazier is that that I.P. lady said “a nickel every time somebody plays it”… who tf is paying 5 whole big whopping cents per stream?!
This was a great chance to highlight a local bands work.. at the end of the story, saying their name again or giving links would have been “the right” thing to do. Instead of pretending you are with and part of Beyoncé or Taylor swift… Other than misaligned priorities and feigning interest, I liked this coverage.
As a musician myself, I am definitely biased, but I think a lot of people in the comments seem to be missing the point. Regardless of what you think of the band's music, they got ripped off. It's clearly not about the money lost for them - everyone knows spotify pays jack. They seem like a bunch of good, honest fellas who just wanna spread their creation with the world. It's akin to a painting, story, or invention being passed off as someone else's when they had nothing to do with it. Makes me worry for the bands and artists around me. I understand that Rock and Roll was built on stealing or whatever, and that there's only so many notes on a fretboard or in the chromatic scale. However, this is blatant theft. Happy that these dudes came out about their story and that spotify seems to have resolved it.
The small indie band should be able to take the profits from these thieves the scam artist. There's no way they can take down all the fake music so at least let them profit from the music that they created.
Spotify "free" streams at max 160 kbps & 320kbps for "Premium". Here's some info regarding audio resolution from Sony electronics website... "CDs resolution (1,411 kbps) is over 4 times higher than that of MP3s/Spotify (320 kbps).... the higher the bitrate, the more accurately the signal is measured. Bitrate has a direct impact on sound quality. When an original recording is compressed into an MP3 file, a lot of information is lost. A lower bitrate could translate to a softer bass response or weak-sounding drum cymbals, or it could blur the attack and decay of a plucked guitar string. A lot of the details that artists and mixing engineers work hard to put into a recording are diminished or disappear entirely in an MP3/Spotify file.
@@paoloaccomando5249 yep. Believe me we’ve explored our options and here and the best thing to do is make music and continue. We’ve been around nearly 20 years and have never cared about money.
@@neoboomernostalgiacore You aren't alone. Many other small artists are facing the same thing. I've heard not good things about CD Baby. I'm so sorry you're going through this.
@jessemcclary104 Did you do a regular CD Baby account or a CD Baby Pro account? Curious, as I'm researching different companies and stumbled upon this news video. Thanks 🙂✌️
Man hate these guys were ripped off but at least they found one solid fan here! Wish I would have heard them sooner! Hang in there Boys, I have a feeling your “PayDay” is around the corner.
When you WRITE a song, your lyrics are IMMEDIATELY yours by law, and the melody is your IMMEDIATELY by law! These guys are unaware and are likely NOT on a P.R.O. (ASCAP, BMI, etc.) for all their streaming royalties. They also should do RU-vid Content ID on all their tracks they upload, when using a Distributor, to RU-vid. Stealing songs like that, is absolutely illegal and punishable by great fines in America. But if you don’t care to get on a PRO (performance rights organization) and Content ID your songs, and register your lyrics with the copywrite office, you’re susceptible to these scammers
I used to work for a big corporation that existed for the purpose of scamming bands and artists. These corporations are called "rmajor labels" and they've been doing it for a long time. I hear the small ones can be just as bad, unless it's called Dischord or some similar rarity.
Content ID doesn't work fr this because of how it's sped up and the stems get pitch shifted different. It's not made to be listened to, just to register as "musical" to the ID and not as identical to the content ID.
In a way we already have that. Thats where the ISRC & ISWC codes come into play from your music distributor and Performance Rights Organization (as well as your copyright if registered with copyright.gov). In a court setting the main things a legal team will look for is who published the piece of music first via the ISRC / ISWC and the "Likeness" of the altered content. At the end of the day, assuming that the artist produced the piece of music themselves, the artist maintains the original recording copyright even if not registered to the other agency's listed previously.
Wow! Sorry this happened! BTW Your Music 🤠🎶 is great! I'd come see you guys if I were in St Louis! It happens across a lot of Platforms and You Tube Channels! Not just music 🎼🎶 I like your resilience! You guys will win in the long run!
Wow... Old Capital Square Dance Club sounds amazing. It's amazing that there are local bands that didn't make it big who sound just as good famous bands.
this is actually a massive problem with specifically Spotify, because their business module is simply that they incentives labels and artists to upload more so Spotify can reap the benefits. So there's not only stolen songs, but fake songs and artists. Currently the big issue is AI images with the same song over 10,00 tracks and artists. Spotify does not invest in an outreach team as far as im aware of, artists submit music with little to no contact and the deal is done. You can image where and how this can be manipulated where there's not double checking when it comes to uploading to a fortune 500 company's public catalog for the whole world to see and pay a monthly fee alongside
I'd heard the fake band theories before AI, mainly about the ambient electro stuff where an "artist" would have tons of listens and placement in playlists but no information or presence anywhere else. Automatically generated slop is only gonna get worse and keep taking more money from real musicians.
@@AnnoyingOrange420 not only will it take away money from real artists, but kill the app and because it's so big, every other music app that's not iTunes, will be looked at as a scam
It's getting out of control. The Spotify channel for American Dad! Cast has a *random Indian song* with a fake cartoon that says "New 2024 Series Good Morning America" ...
I am an independent producer and artist myself as well as a degreed audio professional from Full Sail University. There are a few flaws with this covered story to note, streaming royalty rates as of right now are between $0.003-$0.005 per stream as set from the royalty courts. Also, Spotify's response is a generic response that can be found on their website FAQ's and was published well before the incident being covered. Although this still does not take away the bigger issue at hand as far as music being stolen from this group of artists, I feel most of us would appreciate a more accurate investigative story. The bigger music streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, and RU-vid Music does do a pretty decent job of detecting altered content however these services are typically on a month to two month delay before issuing royalty payouts or DMCA takedowns.
It makes sense. Think of any song with less than a thousand listeners. Change the title and sound a bit, and nobody will be the wiser, the chances of one of those thousand catching it, or the artist, is slim to none. There's so much music its impossible to keep up with what is new, much less rehashed or just a ripoff.
I appreciate both of what you’re saying, but to me the best case scenario would be if the streaming landscape changed just a little for independent artists. I have a full time day job, so I’m not dependent fully on music
Yooooo, I checked Spotify and Marico Charlotte removed all music and when you search the band name, the first result is Old Capital Square Dance. That’s gnarly!!!
It's copyright infringement. If I can't download a television episode or a movie without paying for it, then these people shouldn't be allowed to rip off musicians. Protect the artists.
@3:35 “You can make a nickel every time someone plays it” What kind of intellectual property law professor is she? Imagine what she’s teaching her students 🍿🤡
I wish they would crack down on all the people who illegally sample . I’m not talking about the people who sample properly I’m talking about the hacks that take a song and just add some reverb and a hi /lo pass and call it a sample without changing anything to the song.
I agree with your first point, but the degree to which we've normalized "proper" sampling as a valid choice ethically and creatively has laid the groundwork for all of this abuse. Many popular performers are just autotuned blathering over someone else's sampled backing track. We should never have accepted that. Low standards hurt all valid artists.
What is astonishing about this and important to note is that it is not just the song, but the recorded performance that is being stolen. This is different than someone re performing a song as passing it off in part, or entirely, as one's own material (eg., Jimmy Page claiming Jake Holmes' Dazed and Confused as his own). What's so bad about this is that the thief is stealing not only from the songwriter(s) but from every musician on the track and anyone involved in it's production.
🎼💸🤖🎶💲🤖💲🎵🤖💸🎼 Thank you for sending my youngbots to bot school!! In all seriousness...I like what I heard, I am going to look your music up and support where I can. This is an ugly story. Keep moving forward, hopefully Spotify finds a way to get this under control.
The oddest thing about all this is that HOW IS THIS BAND NOT Popular in the main stream, they are amazing, so much better than the crap thats out from poular people. Dude writes amazing stuff!
Also when you search for Marico Charlotte it takes you to the old capital Spotify page. I would have to imagine that the KMOV story and inquiries had something to do with that.
gossh i've seen this happen to so many people, and seen so many stories about and examples of this. a few years ago, this same thing happened to Cary Huang's brother, and the process to get his music back was quite lengthy and painful.
I want to feel for them, although at 0:52 the flag disrespect is weirding me out a bit. Plus, they could clean up their vocals kind of a lot. Otherwise, word to their mom and them! They rawk! ❤
Ai has already killed music, notice all these new “artist” releasing their “NEW SONG” on ig and TT? Its Ai, thats allllll it is, and i do mean all of it, the instruments the vocals the song writing all of it, all you do is record yourself speaking and Ai takes the cadence. If a artist does not have a live video of any kind, singing playing anything, then its 100% fake, they used Ai.
@@Metalheadreaper87 yup! There is not gonna be a end to this, they don’t even write music anymore even with ai, they just go for that little 10sec jingle for the reels, and lets face it those are ear worms and they are meant to be. I miss bands, like real bands with real members, now everything is just “insert someones name” singer song writer garbage piles. I feel for this band, frustration must be relentless, they have that good Guided by Voices vibes too,
That sucks. I hope they find a way to get you the compensation you deserve. On a positive note, how awesome are the shell pink Tele and bass (hard to tell for sure, but appears to be a P/J bass)?
What if there was a toa for submitting songs to Spotify that said “you agree that the submitted song(s) are your own, if it is not, a charge of 10x your revenue will be made every hour until the end of the year.”
Cheating, stealing, and lying seem to be the new norm in every form of entertainment. The internet moves so fast that the fake band likely made their money, will disappear, and steal from the next. When money is involved some people will go to any extreme to get it.
I’ve been getting a lot of questions about the black and white flag that’s behind me, so I just want to clarify. It’s not a “boot licker” flag as I’ve been told. We bought that thing like 15 years ago and I always thought of it as a homage to the “stankonia” album cover by outkast.
Our next gig is may 25th at the broadway oyster bar! I wish we were playing this weekend. I’m ready to play a rock and roll show! Thanks for your support!
Tidal, the highest paying streaming service pays $0.01284 per play. All other streaming services pay much less. This lady talking about 5 cents a play has zero clue what she is talking about.
I like how they barely mention the actual Band’s name but mention the rip off artist’s name on several occasions giving them more publicity than the original
It’s not even limited to music. I’ve had graphic design work stolen and sold by others on tee shirt websites. But, as was reported, I’d have to continuously file takedown notices with each and every website I find my designs on. It’s a huge issue.
A nickel a play? Lady it's more like .0001 per play. 50,000 plays of one song lost them about $5.00 in royalties. Either way this is why we have publishers who actively protect our "product".
Great band. That dude in St. Louis is a good song writer. He should be in Nashville writing for big names. Then he'd have connections and freedom to bramch out.
Thank you for checking us out and your kind words. I’d love to write songs for others. I have a ton of unused songs that I’ve written with others in mind to sing so that would be amazing. ❤
Oh wow, that's crazy ! I was looking up the documentary "loose change" and this band showed up on the play list but it wasn't what i was looking for, or was it !?
@@neoboomernostalgiacore I hope it bites you where you pee from The lead singer looks like Nirvana, more than one of you drive truck and please don't ever put yourself in a convo with the replacements! And yes you do play all the time in South City bars
Almost didn't click on the video. I thought it was a type of creative self promo funny idea. But then when I realize the story was real I understand the sad situation of the band. Hope things get solved and them get their fair share.
