Ok ... so i got this 10 year battery First Alert Smoke alarm about 2 years ago. There are other smoke alarms online: ( amzn.to/2Yy71uH ) It starts beeping low battery after 1 year for one unit and 2 years for another unit. Not really happy at all especially if i cant return it. I may just take it apart if i cant return it. Stayed tuned for future updates!

I own a lot of rentals and purchased around 45 packages of the 2 pack detectors at Costco in Feb 2015 model #P1210. So 90 total detectors. I'd say 1 in 8 did not beep at all right out of the box and were exchanged right away for new packages. Then over the last couple years around half have started beeping for no reason. Company has claimed that units need to be cleaned of dust and that's what causes them to go off for no reason. If you call the number on the back of the detector they will send replacements. I have also had an issue with the detectors not going off with smoke present. I was alerted to this when a tenant caused a stove fire and the detector in the kitchen did not go off. Fortunately, the hallway did go off. We then put the remaining detectors at other properties in a bucket of smoke and found a few more did not go off with smoke. Why were these issues never a problem with the 9 volt battery detectors? I can't believe this product has not yet been recalled. It was brought to market too fast.

Mine died a few days ago, bought 11/2015. Wife threw it away and I picked it out the garbage and called first alert after reading the comments in this section, and the warranty person had me go through a couple of trouble shooting instructions. It was dead as a door nail. They are sending me out a replacement. Thank you first alert for standing by your product! And they are not charging me a shipping fee! Bought the two pack at Costco.

Same issue and now the replacement they sent is doing the same thing. 10 year smoke detectors should last longer than 1 year.

Marty See it’s in our bedroom and gets no direct sunlight. I tried all their tricks they told me about dust, etc and didn’t help. Will probably go with a different brand or just get another one from SimpliSafe and add it to our system.

Hmmm. Mine went off tonight. Pushed the button to turn off the constant tone. After reading these comments I can't imagine why anyone would get a replacement from First Alert.... with so many failures. Hope I got it at Costco.... Mine also says it was manufactured Feb 6, 2015.

The low battery indicator is one single chirp every 43 seconds for 24 hours. Press and hold the test/silence button and it will silence the unit for 8 hours. If you hear three chirps every now and then, your unit is dusty. Wipe the dust off and then blow around the unit. The battery itself should last nearly ten years. I would guess if you're reading this, and haven't owned the unit for ten years, dust is the issue, not the battery.

I too was having the same problem as you and the rest of the posters on here. I have 5 other alarms from Kidde in a rental property and all of them were easy to install. Screw bracket, mount alarm, twist to activate and hold down test button to test and they were ready. This First Alert one wouldn't work straight out the box, kept mounting and re-mounting, twisting to activate and nothing for over 20 -30 times. So i decided to throw it in the thrash, then watched your video and decided to tinker with it. I didn't want to move the Deactivation switch because it said that if thats done it would Not Work again. I deactivated it and it Started working immediately. Anyways, I can tell from other commenters that this one is going to have many problems so I'm staying away from First Alert from Now On, but thanks 4 helping me troubleshoot.

Had similar alarm going off - low number of months - model produced Nov 2016, installed 2017 alarming 2019. I ended up deactivating unit as even outside in clear area was locked in 'alarm mode'. I called the 800 number and since I had deactivated the unit, they are sending a replacement. Interesting - the response did mention a couple of items a) Information - 'Spiders are active at night' - their experience is that a small spider may 'take up residence' in the unit causing the alarming, and or b) Question - 'How often did we clean (using a hot air drier on low or compressed air cannister) our units?' Common House dust often settles in and causes issue. Recommendation was to clean them monthly. Since we change out our air filters monthly, I guess we will add this activity to the smoke detectors for a while to see if we do in fact get to the 10 year mark on sister units installed at the same time which have not yet alarmed out. The only comment I have to offer here is that I have one unit in my garage wood working area which to date has never been 'cleaned'. If it alarms, I will try some compressed air on it prior to deactivating ---

Bought a First Alert on 12/10/2017 and put them up right away. Here it is July 21, 2018 and the thing went off in the night and scared us half to death. Checked for smoke and all but there was nothing wrong. Cleaned the cover like it said replace battery and it still goes off. We have taken it down and will contact first alert about it. Thank god I saved my receipt. I called the hardware where I bought it and he said any problems perhaps he could help. In the past when we bought this mobile home brand new we had first alert hardwired and battery back up fire alarms five of them all through the house. We came home one day and every alarm was off in the house and we couldn’t figure out why. I contacted the person that ordered the mobile home for me and then we found out that there was a recall on them as well. What has happened to first alert? They used to be a real good company in the past I don’t understand what has happened to the product. They have gotten cheap just like everything else. My father used to say old was better knew was not.

The deactivation button is supposed to be "halfway". Between the Off position and under the tab! When you turn it clockwise into the bracket, the switch goes halfway to turn it on. Here are the positions: Deactivate (Will disable it forever) On Off (for transporting)

Yes, very helpful. Brand new and wouldn't work! Was about to take mine back - but BOTH wouldn't work?? that just didn't seem right, like I was missing something. I read and re-read the instructions. Very simple - just put the alarm on the bracket to activate. Mine actually come with a clear tab to pull out (similar to devices that come with batteries installed and have a cover over the batter to pull off), and was about to pull the first one out, but after reading the installation directions again, I thought - 'Oh, I'm glad I didn't pull that out or I would have deactivated it.' Then after reading your post, decided to re-read what was printed on the pull-out tab, and it DOES say "Remove and Discard Before Activating Alarm". But it is hard to read because it is clear and you can see the printing on the alarm body under it. Again - THIS IS NOT IN THE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS!

Same Issue. I purchased P 1210 smoke alarm because it had 10 year battery life. I had purchased and installed on 1/15/2017. It went bad (started chirping ) on January 1, 2018. Less than a year for 10 year battery. First Alert needs to test the alarm before claiming 10 year battery life.

Same issue. Made in 2016-SEP-08, had up from 01/08/2017 until 12/31/17 at which point it's gone off several times today. No one's cooking, there's no logical cause I can find for the alarm to go off, etc. I see a battery inside with Chinese writing all over it, typically the sign of a cheap battery purchased in bulk, not a "ten year battery." Battery model is CR1...? I see the contacts were soldered to the ends of the battery which is not a smart idea. The heat of soldering them ( even if brief like on an assembly line ) can be damaging to the chemical process in the battery itself. This was foolish on First Alert's part. They saved money on basic prongs at each end of the battery? I hope they drive to work in cars with no brakes or seat belts, you know, "to save money."

I agree this product is terrible. Costco please get rid of this and go with another manufacturer. First Alert somehow has a corner on the market. In addition I am 56 and I had to get out a magnifying glass to read the useless instructions. These are going back, and I recommend no one buy them. I'm writing a bad review on Google.

Sterling, I just pulled mine out of the box, brand new and wouldn't work! Was about to take mine back (Costco or Sams) - but BOTH wouldn't work?? That just didn't seem right, like I was missing something. I read and re-read the instructions a dozen times! Very 'simple - just put the alarm on the bracket to activate.' NOT! Mine actually come with a clear tab to pull out (similar to devices that come with batteries installed and have a cover over the batter to pull off), and was about to pull the first one out, but after reading the installation directions again, I thought - 'Oh, I'm glad I didn't pull that out or I would have deactivated it.' Then after viewing your video, plus reading the comments on your post, decided to re-read what was printed on the pull-out tab, and it DOES say "Remove and Discard Before Activating Alarm". But it is hard to read because it is clear and the printing on the alarm body under it also shows under it. Again - THIS IS NOT IN THE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS! When I pulled out the tab then put the alarm on the bracket, there is a triangle that pushed the switch up (in the direction that says "DEACTIVATE") and activated it! In any case, perhaps your switch got pushed away just a little and got 'confused,' lol. Not a matter to leave to chance, though. My instructions say that, "Products under warranty may be returned to the manufacturer for replacement." And to contact "Consumer Affairs Division at 1-800-323-9005." Also, address to return is: 1301 Joe Battle, El Paso TX 79936. But if purchased at Costco, I would save the hassle and just return it to them and say it is still under warranty but doesn't work. Who knows, maybe there is even a recall on these stupid things! Hope this helps you or someone else.

I just returned one to Costco today that had woke me at 2am with no reason. Got a refund (had to take both back) and bought a new set. Installed the first one and nothing......no light or test alarm. The second one seemed to work and showed a test light briefly. Moved the switch on the non-working unit to the center position and got a blinking light and a test alarm to sound. Apparently, their instructions are not clear and they need to be rewritten. Of course, since this is not the exact way that the manufacturer suggests installing them, you have to wonder if they will work correctly when it is important that they do.

I realized that in order to test the unit, the detector has to be secured to the mounting bracket first to engage it. I made the mistake of always trying to test them right out of the package with the mounting bracket separated from the alarm. I called the company and they told me what I was doing wrong.

noticed that you might have to slide the "deactivate" switch completely UNDER the overhanging plastic nub to make it "deactivated". that seems to correspond on the verbage that states once it's slid there, it can't be un-slid out and is hence deactivated so no one picks it up and thinks it's still good. see what happens if you slide it completely under the nub if the alarm still goes
