Football traces it's roots back to Rugby (or what was called Rugby at the time). It makes perfect sense that throwing it a long way wasn't part of the game.
Here is a little history lesson for you. American football comes from the popular sport of Rugby. Rugby balls are still shaped like that and they can be thrown forward as well. But in the actual game it’s illegal to throw the ball forward. You should go out and meet your local rugby club and interview them. They might let you practice with them. It would make a great RU-vid video.
