In a major milestone for the Royal Australian Navy, the first of the new Arafura-class offshore patrol vessels, Arafura, has been officially launched in Osborne, South Australia.
The event was attended by the Governor of South Australia, Premier of South Australia, Minister for Defence and the Chief of the Royal Australian Navy.

firstly, it's not a corvette, not a destroyer and not a frigate..... its an offshore patrol vessel - its designed to meet a need that the RAN has to undertake extended long range border and fisheries protection patrols sometimes in pretty shitty weather, providing support to the smaller patrol vessels (currently Cape Class) that are manned by Border Force personnel. We have tried using smaller vessels for this over the last 40 years....they havent been easy roles to fill with "patrol vessel" size ships. Australia has a huge ocean economic zone where the principle threat is Indonesian fisherman in wooden boats or illegal arrivals in an array of mostly fishing vessels. Against this threat, the 40mm chosen would have been perfectly fine for the task. Unfortunately, not for the first time.....those selling things overstated their ability to deliver what they said they could. The TWS (Typhoon Weapons System) which is the interim weapon is one we know, and accurate and reliable. I'm sure in the future there will be options to change out weapons as there always is......but these are designed for fisheries/customs surveillance and boarding, not NGS on the Jiaodong Peninsula. Having spent time on Fremantle and Armidale class boats.....I'm glad to see a much better platform for a role that's misunderstood by many.

The Freo and Armidale classes were always inadequate and undergunned for the role, this class has the ability to take better weapons and should be fitted with them. Its a mistake not to do so.

Fantastic achievement by all involved. The sailors now have a vessel worthy of the task. Possibly could do with a larger caliber main weapon but I'm being picky (the arms locker could always fit in a couple of Javelins I suppose).

To stop illegal migration, poachers and drug smugglers? Lol that's way overkill. Even a 25mm autocannon will sink a commercial ship. It will have additional 50 cal machine guns. Overmatch for even a crew of terrorists with assault rifles. If the flight deck supports a navy helicopter or armed drone that's an additional threat.

They are big enough to be a corvette but completely lack any meaningful weapons. With the current climate these ships need to be able to launch missiles. A missed opportunity.

No, It's an OPV with Mine warfare configuration. It can be refitted with cannons and missiles if necessary like Brunei's. But to save cost for their primary mission, missiles and cannon are not necessary. There's always contingency configuration for wartime with this ship. FYI, OPV is not designed for warfare in general but mostly maritime laws enforcement.

Agreed! While it would be possible to fit them out with the very capable NSM (low RCS + IIR Seeker sea-skimming ASM with land attack capability), the range of this weapon is modest, while a Chinese surface combatant would carry longer range ASMs. The Arafura is a bit of a slow-poke in comparison in terms of flank speed, and with no provision for multi-layered ASMD, it would not take long for it to be hunted down. If it carried an MQ-8C UAV equipped with sonobuoy pods it would be useful assisting a Hunter class frigate to deploy a multi-static sonobuoy sensor network, and could provide an airborne surface search sensor for OTH targeting for missiles launched by other platforms. And a hydrographic survey capability and a USV MCM capability (carried out at a distance!) would be useful for an amphibious landing group ... but as a surface combatant ... nah! Although it may well be called upon to serve as a minor warship in difficult circumstances, it is not designed for that. The Arafura is a ute but should serve well for constabulary duties ... which is what it is intended for.

Cost, manpower and mission focus. There are other ships that are capable to handle such threat with that matters in peacetime. Different navy requires different needs. Brunei's similar OPVs are a mini Corvette. Because it fits for their needs, they don't have a big Frigate to begin with due to manpower issues. So putting missiles to make their OPVs multipurpose vessels are one solution. This OPV is configured with Mine warfare system BTW.

I notice a disturbing littoral-naval trend. Seems to be infecting Canada, Ireland and now Australia. The continuing tendency for lighter main deck gun. Perfect example HMS Aradura. Initially planned for 40mm Marlin auto cannon. Yet downgraded to a 25mm varmint cannon. I suggest this is government appeasing an ineffective shipyard. The shipyard desires to NOT handle such heavier gun (thicker steel cutting and welding, heavier cranes not needed in modular commercial vessels) So in effect places such as Irving shipyard in Canada, doesn't want to build it as per blueprints. Complicit navy downgrades thier main gun to appease the cheap shipbuilder. And navy bean counters love this merely because the militaries formerly involved in Afghanistan can consume previously bought & paid for, Huge war stockpile 25mm Bushmaster cannon. I think this is true. Other evidence this might be true: Why isn't the Canadian navy insisting the Harry DeWolfe class vessels come with a forward multi gun mount in a single turret?????? Name me one western navy with a twin 25mm cannon last 20 years brand new equipment????? Wag the dog folks. Tail wagging the dog.
