Arborist ascent with Ronin Lift battery powered ascender and review. Overall with a few minor refinements this could be a great product. I like the easy ascent leaving you fresh to begin working the tree. Obviously this isn't for every tree, but on the large ones it would help. For everyone wondering, I followed the manufacturer's instructions and still encountered some issues covered in this video. Manufacturer instructions have been updated since this video and changed a bit. Much better info available for new users. A great product for a reasonable price.

I appreciate you posting this video. I was contemplating selling my Wraptor and buying a Ronin, but now I don't think so. Even though the Wraptor is gas-powered (need ear protection) with no means to descend with it, mine has worked flawlessly. The risk of possibly chewing up (or melting) my life-support rope is a risk I cannot afford. Thanks!
@stihlgotit
@stihlgotit 5 лет назад
I always back it up with a separate climb line, but yes it can be a little unnerving to know that possibility exists. However they have since revised the instructions and it is not really an issue now.

The slipping of the rope as seen in his second ascent is lack of knowledge of how to adjust the unit. Rope diameters are all slightly different. The large red knob at the bottom adjusts the back tension. If slipping is detected, IMMEDIATELY STOP, rotate the knob counter clockwise until snug and resume. Allowing the the rope to spin can melt the cover of the rope which is obviously dangerous, and the melted rope can migrate into the unit requiring a service.
@kevinfailla1978
@kevinfailla1978 4 года назад
It was obvious from the start that you didn't tighten the tensioner, but you STILL kept trying to go up. Instructions are very clear about if it slips, you have to tighten the tentioner.
@stihlgotit
@stihlgotit 4 года назад
Wrong, when it first came out it said not to over tension. They specifically said only use as much tension as it take to ascend. Which is where I had it. I made the first ascent then the second never moved the knob. I got this on pre-order. They came out with a revised set of instructions after I posted this video. They were in contact with me shortly after the video and revised loading and tension setting instructions accordingly.

If it was me, I've stick an actual rope grab above it like a CMI rope walker and not that prusik, because you're liable to suck that prusik into the housing if it gets pinched right; and that becomes a nasty situation. 4 years later how do you feel about it, and what it does to your ropes over time? Any marring, or causing the ropes to fluff? (I'm sure you've realized the hard way you need a 32-max rope, not normal ropes) Or did you just decide to sell it off?
@stihlgotit
@stihlgotit Год назад
This was the pmi rope provided with the unit initially. It was a 32 strand. The Ronin works fine. They contacted me shortly after this video with revised instructions and I haven't had any trouble since. I don't use it much, mainly for cottonwoods. Super wide canopies with 80' plus open ascent. I use a rope runner on a second line now and abandon the access line once I'm up so the Ronin can be lowered.

As the rope sheath is being degraded from ascending without disengaging & holding the brake open, the tension is lessened, due to the rope continuous degradation. If the tension is set properly & hold open the brake just before or at the same time you start the ascent, you may find positive result. Note that the tension screw knob works the opposite of what you would intuitively assume, out ccw for more tension, in cw for less.
@stihlgotit

I've got a Ronin. It is a little finicky. If you ;need to move your tie in point, the options are not attractive. Mostly, you use a throw ball to advance the TIP. Then descend to th;e ground, and walk out enough additional line to account for any higher TIP, release the anchor point and pull down the rope. Then, use the throw line to pull the rope over the new TIP and re-anchor the rope. Now, ascend again. If you are working a tall tree, the ride is nice, but the battery won't last the day. If you want it to ride to the TIP and then change equipment to work the tree, you can leave it at the tip and after descending with the other gear, release the basal anchor and tie the rope into a loop.This will allow ;you to lower the Ronin and then untie the rope and run it through the Ronin. This won't work if you have an eye splice at the anchor. The technique is entirely different compared to a Wraptor.

No, bad instructions. It was the rope they included with it. This was one of the very first. I pre-ordered it before they were made. They said use the absolute least amount of tension that doesn't slip. Now they say it is ok to run with a reasonable amount of tension. They said if you put too much on it there was a risk of burning the motor out. This one doesn't have reverse like the new ones either.
