Bought an older 830C this spring and have been piling brush with it for the past few months and I finally put the head back on and started cutting on some shovel/yarder ground. Just wanted to say thanks for posting these videos, I've started from scratch with cutting and it has helped a lot to watch how you do it. That being said I can see I have a ways to go to be as efficient as you are with that machine!

Right on! Glad to hear that the videos are helpful. Showing how I do it, and maybe helping others avoid the learning curves I went through is the reason my wife and I started doing this really so thanks for the feedback. When you are piling brush with your 830 do you hang a set of grapples on it or do you have a brush rake/grapple setup? Reason I ask, I've seen the power clam type heads that Tigercat and other manufactures make, they sure seem effective. Having the ability to control the tool would sure help an operator out for piling. Seems to me that having the right atttitude is the most important part of being a good operator, sounds to me you have that already. Good luck with it and good cuttin to ya!

@@thedailylogger I put a CWS fixed powerclam grapple on it for piling. It does pretty well and its nice to have the option to pile some of the steeper tethered ground . Only downside is I don't have much reach with that buncher boom. But thank you, just trying to keep the stumps low and those teeth out of the dirt!
@thedailylogger
@thedailylogger Год назад
@@alexpond6132 Sounds like a nice setup. Little short on reach like you say but at least you can get around well. Do you cut your own tethered ground as well? 855 with a 5195 or something similar? I've got a line machine in my future so I'm looking for tips! I'm pretty stoked. One for you that might help until you get dialed in is to stay fairly close to your stems, that way you don't have to contend with as much machine motion as you extend the head. Good cuttin to ya!
@alexpond6132
@alexpond6132 Год назад
@@thedailylogger Nothing tethered yet! I would say with a yarder to try keep crew as minimal as possible, hard to find anyone that works hard and the L&I rates and everything else is making it about impossible to have any men on the ground. I think guys that are shoveling to a grapple carriage are really on to something. Good luck and stay safe!

@@alexpond6132 Copy that. Anybody that is worth hiring is already being taken good care of where they are at! I agree with everything you say in this. Just looked at the weather, seems as though this bonus patch we've been enjoying is about to come to an end. Enjoy it while you can! Have a good rest of your week.

This is a really great video for numerous reasons Fuel consumption is for me a daily concern. My LX870D runs around 9 gals per hr. If it gets up to 9.5 I am either in steeper ground, bigger wood, dirty air filter or dull teeth. If its the first two, suck it up,if its the second two, deal with it. Clean filter or turn/change teeth. Fuel is a major cost. Your comments about the lay starting a piece like that. I believe we all try to make the shovel/skidder have as easier job as we can give it. However starting with a steep cut bank, buffer zone and road does not allow for efficiency for any of us. As always I have learned from your video. Thanks so much.

@thedailylogger Год назад
Hey Steve, good to hear from you. Thanks. Copy the fuel consumption. If we save a half gallon an hour that's 4 to 5 a day, 20 a week, a hundred bucks or so net right there. At the end of this summer I started resetting the air filter restriction tracker on the monitor every morning along with the tree counter, fuel and DEF. I noticed with the last outer air filter I was pulling 24.5 inches or so when it started flickering the alert and I changed it out. With a new, clean one it runs around 13 to 14. Big increase in power and efficiency with that so I think the monitor is probably the most accurate gauge as opposed to the alert sensor or the plastic gauge on the filter housing itself. Glad you get something out of these, I sometimes wonder about stuff I do, like backcutting down this buffer so I can start my lead right where I want it. But then when I do get it opened up and start that first pass it all comes together. I think that extra effort getting started really pays off for me in efficiency for the long run. Thanks for the comment, have a good week coming up!

Fairly steep cut bank there but you make it look easy! Thanks for sharing!!

Yeah, there were two spurs I had to cut above on this unit and both of them had pretty good cut-banks. That's just an uncomfortable feeling I don't mind admitting! There were several times when my hands were sweating! Cutting above the active haul road with flaggers I'd wait for trucks to go by and I'd be looking directly down on them. I have the right tool for the job though, I have to say it again, this Buncher is a absolute wood cutting thing of beauty! 7000 hours on her and I still feel like I'm working within the envelope of its potential. Appreciate the compliment, and the interest, good cuttin to ya!

I really wish I could overlap my rows like that!! My cable skidder guys are big babys and they would quit if I did that very much...lol. That's why I am never really far ahead and I have so much downtime because when I do get far enough ahead that I have to overlap I have to quit. I much prefer using the grapple skidders because then I can go crazy. I recently took the trip I was telling you about and before I left I unleashed for 7 hours and it took the 2 cable skidders 4 days to catch it up. But it was fairly steep and wet a Duffy ground. I was reading your fuel consumption comment, I watch mine in real time all the time. In my highest performance mode mine reads between 4 and 7 gph and I use no def but I do have an exhaust filter that burns off every day. Mine is a 2018 and Link Belt Isuzu engines didn't go to def until 2019. We could have bought a 2019 but we choose the 2018 because of that. But with all that being said I only have to fuel about every 6 working days and I hold 116 gallons and we work from 7am to 5pm approximately with about 30 minutes for lunch and maintenance. So that shows you how much I am ahead and my machine is shut down. My cutting machine probably rests 60% of the time. The rest of the time I am mechanicing or building skidding roads. Be safe out there!

Glad to hear your trip worked out. Always a little stressful for me if I'm going to take some time off or scheduling gets fouled up and I end up over extended. It always seems to work out, but I don't like the feeling. I'm a big fan of buffers right down the line, takes the stress out of it and keeps those loads flowing. The Izuzus are good engines, the Link Belt side is working out well with the 3 of them, they all are super efficient. I've actually got an Isuzu powered machine in my future, more details to follow. Have a good week coming up

How many gallons per hour does that 870 use?
@thedailylogger
@thedailylogger Год назад
It varies of course but generally it runs between 9 and 10 gallons an hour. The monitor records it and it's pretty interesting to keep track, things like heavy wet soil, really steep ground, big multiple cut wood, increased restriction at the primary air filter, or even when the teeth start getting dull - it shows up right away in the fuel consumption. Or for that matter, really good production! It runs about 6.5 to 7.5 an hour for DEF for what it's worth. Hows your new buncher working for you? Seems like you got an 853 a while back? Hope it's doing well for you. Thanks for the question.
@thedailylogger
@thedailylogger Год назад
That doesn't add up! What I meant to say is that it burns .65 to .75 gph of DEF.

@@oldtimerf7602 Copy. Sorry to hear that, sounded like a good machine if I remember right. None of my business but I'll ask anyhow, was that through Grappones? When I was back there I dealt primarily with New England Equipment out of White River Junction Vt. They later were bought out by Grappones, we did quite a bit with them too before me and my business partner sold. Well, better luck on the next one.
