this was the first draft of burn that Lin wrote up but scraped because he didn’t think it fit well for eliza ! but it’s sooo good

I do think the other burn was better for the actual show, but I do wish the lines “your enemy whispers so you have to scream” and “when will you learn that they are your legacy, we are your legacy” are absolutely amazing and should have been kept in. I like this version better overall but I think the now burn is better fit for the actual show.

This was the first version Lin wrote for Burn. They decided it was too angry for Eliza and not heartbroken enough.

"They are your legacy, we are your legacy" Alexander was so obsessed with establishing his legacy that he didn't realize he already found it with his family

I always thought that the weakest part of burn was not mentioning the children. so in first burn when eliza says "explain to the children" i get CHILLS

I’m not sure if you’re aware Hannah, but all of these women played Eliza either on Broadway, Chicago, West End, or one of the touring companies! Rachel is the OG west end Eliza! And Julia Harriman performed with Lin in Puerto-Rico! Oh and Shoba Naryan was the OG Eliza in the Philip company! Ariana was also the OG Chicago Eliza, I’m not sure about Lexi however, I think she might have played Eliza once Pippa left

It's like watching Eliza react to Eliza in harmony with Eliza being backed up by Eliza singing with Eliza explaining the pain of Eliza by roasting Hamilton... Edit: Holy cow, I'm famous!!

the whole "heaven forbid someone whisper..." segment is SO GOOD, if they replaced the end of this song with burn's ("the world has no right to my heart...") that would EASILY be one of (if not) the best song in any musical production ever, for me at least lol

I actually prefer First Burn because it really portrays the anger Eliza rightfully feels in finding out Alexander cheated on her

I was lucky enough to see Rachelle Ann Go as Eliza on the West End, and she stole the whole show, she's like a Disney princess.

It’s part of the Hamildrops, those are different versions of the ones in the musical, all those women were Eliza’s in different companies of Hamilton: Arianna, Shoba and Julia were part of the tours, Lexi was the replacement of Philippa and Rachelle was Eliza in the West End.

I feel like this is the version that Angelica would've sung if she was the one who married Alexander

I prefer First Burn as a song, but I understand why they went with Burn story wise. It just fits better with Eliza's character, but First Burn is so amazing, it gives me chills

All of these women have played Eliza in different productions of Hamilton and Lin has talked about how they all bring different emotions and portrayals to the same numbers and how all of them enrich the musical in such a wonderful way. This was the first version written of Burn, deemed too angry for a moment when Eliza's supposed to be heartbroken more than anything else. I find it incredibly satisfying.

I get actual goosebumps every single time I listen to this song. This song has so much power and emotion in it and I freaking love how it has multiple women singing the same song and it feels like they are all supporting each other and oh my god I just love it!!

Yes! This was an earlier version. But it was decided that they wanted a more heartbroken version rather than an angry version.

"Your enemies whisper so you have to *scream*" even if it was all on the same melody was so powerful and sounded perfect. And then the harmonies sounded beautiful. When i heard it i was taken aback.

"Your enemy whispers so you have to scream" and "And when the time comes, explain to the children the pain and embarrassment you put their mother through" are my favorite lines. I love the way the word "mother" is said.

I absolutely LOVE this song! All 5 are different sides of Eliza reacting to Alexanders betrayal. Arianna is confusion and wants to know why this happened. Shoba is heartbreak as the hurting mother. Lexi is logic and wants to understand Alexanders betrayal. Rachelle is anger and wants to make Alexander feel her pain. Julia is doubt and wants to know what went wrong.

'First Burn' is as it sounds. It's the first version of 'Burn' that Lin wrote, but he scrapped it because it seemed for too angry, vengeful and snappy for Eliza's kind and forgiving character. He decided rather than leave it to be forgotten to re-write it for a group and put it on the 'Hamilton Mixtape' album.

You definitely need to react to “Wait for it” and then “The Room Where it happened” from Hamilton, as they are both so linked to the Aaron Burr character development. His explanation of why is is like he is, and then the turning point for him.

It’s called first burn because it was actually the first version of the song, but the people writing decided it didn’t fit the character’s personality. I REALLY love this version, I actually sang it with four other people in choir for a performance bc we loved it so much!

The one you said that sounded like Phillipa is Rachelle Ann who originated Eliza in West End. She probably is the best Eliza right after Phillipa for me coz she brought anger to the character and a whole new take on Eliza as well, I just love how perfect her casting was.

It was so fun watching you react to this one! I'm glad you enjoyed the angrier first draft of this song as much as I did. I'd also love to hear your thoughts on the twin songs "Helpless" and "Satisfied" from Hamilton (they happen one right after the other in the show). The first one gives Eliza's perspective on her romance with Alexander, and then the second one literally rewinds the scene and gives a different perspective from Angelica. It's so interesting to see how the two songs work in tension with each other and I think "Satisfied" is an extraordinary performance from Renee Elise-Goldsberry; the song itself is so challenging in its switches from rapid hip-hop riffs to all-out Broadway belting, plus it has some of the cleverest lyrics and choreography in the show.

AHHHHH I had the pleasure of seeing Julia Harriman on the Broadway tour of Hamilton in Atlanta and she KILLED IT. Absolutely crushed in. Then of course she goes on to play Eliza with Lin in Puerto Rico cause she's a BEAST. Rachelle Ann Go is also a queen, not only did she play Eliza in Hamilton, she was also in Miss Saigon AND Fantine in Les Mis. All these ladies are immensely talented.

This song makes me cry so bad sometimes because its beautiful! The story really shines when they sing this..

This is so bittersweet for me because I was supposed to sing this song in a concert last March. We were a week from opening when the pandemic hit. Covid took so many things away, but the fact that it took this concert from me shocks me to the core. I still can't listen to many many broadway songs without bursting into tears.
