Italy's is well known for its railway network, in particular its High Speed network. The country's national rail operator, Trentalia, operators a wide range of long distances intercity services including Intercity Frecciabianca and top rank Frecciarossa "Red Arrow" trains. However, also racing along the Italian mainline are trains from an entirely different private operator, ITALO. Commencing services in early 2012, it became Europe's first private open access operator of 300 km/h (190 mph) high-speed trains, under the brand name Italo.
But just what is it like to travel with this unusual train operator. I took a short trip with Italo from Bologna to Milan to see whether they are as good as their publicly owned competitor (Trentalia), or maybe even better.
