Hi Lucy ,with the plot,just measure out a 2m2 part and start digging and do a little bit at a time,that was me a year ago and now I’m in control a bit😂😂my plot is at pollok park and I just do a little at a time,the biggest motivation is looking at the seed catalogs

Turn your back on the plot and dig it this way you only see what you have done not what you have to do. psychologically it will really help you when getting the weeds out. Great start to the plant and it's always nice to see new gardeners filming their experience for others. Subbed

Thank you so much! I have been struggling with motivation issues when tackling the plot. It's just a wee bit hard to start when you know there is so so much more to go. Turning my back on the work sounds like a really decent plan. Il try it next time! ☺️ Haha- just thought filming might explain to my family and friends why I'm obsessed with my new allotment and my container garden. So glad you subscribed. Just checked out your channel and I've subscribed to you too 🥳 lovely to know there is a decent allotment RU-vid crowd kicking about!

Go to the council or site owners about knot weed it is reportable to environment agency and they legally have to get rid of it

Once you got the top layer foliage off use a mattock to take the surface layer off. Get down to the dirt and then dig with a fork taking all the weed u can. Only thing u can do bar pay someone to kill it.

You are doing the right thing, breaking the work down into portions a bit at a time; that's how I cleared my allotment which was overgrown when I took it on 17 years ago. The worst thing is if you have perennial weeds such as couch grass which you have to get every last bit of root out . Japanese Knotweed (or 'Romping Mary') as it used to be called around here in the Manchester area is still around my area; it was in an embankment of Edwardian back gardens which were accessed vis steps up the 'banking' as we used to call it; this was back in the late 60's/early 70's and my Dad never managed to get rid of it; I've heard the roots go down up to 17 feet. Other than paying a fortune to get it injected, I don't know of anyway of getting rid of it unfortunately. Once most of the weeds are cleared, I would suggest getting some well rotted horse manure and spreading it over the plot for the worms to take down over the winter and it will give the soil a good boost. The best piece of advice I can give you to get good crops is to feed your soil every year with manure and also bagged fertilisers where needed and also comfrey liquid feed. Best of luck anyway.

Thank you for your comment. I have never heard of Japanese Knotweed being called Romping Mary before! I love a plant with a silly common name; "sticky willy" comes to mind (Galium aparine) as one of my favourites. You're right, it is a total fortune to inject the knotweed. But luckily, i know someone on my plot who "knows a guy" and has some Japanese Knotweed stem injection fluid going spare. Hopefully that will make a difference, but the thought of the roots being up to 17 feet deep, like you said, does not fill me with the most confidence! Ah well, i can always just plant around it. Thanks for your manure advice as well. Our allotment has a supply of manure which we can help ourselves to, so i will take your advice and put a bunch down as soon as we hit soil! 🌱

@@lucybloom5463 I assume you have nearby stables; I am lucky in that my allotment sire has 2 stables nearby that you are allowed to take free manure from.

Congrats on getting, and starting, your plot. Name? What about 'Bloom n Tales', or maybe 'The Gardens Bloom'. I mean your name is just perfect for this subject.🌻

don't dig your plot, make you're borders, take out the annual weeds, cover with cardboard and then dung if you have some there or the cheapest compost you can find, you will grow as many crops not digging as you will digging, iv'e had mine for 8 years now you cant beat having fresh veg, good luck. Oh and sort out a patch now and get some garlic planted ASAP.
@lucybloom5463
@lucybloom5463 3 года назад
Thank you for your advice! I am very (very) keen to try no dig. I have heard a whole bunch of fantastic things about it. Our weeds now are mostly pulled up now but they are not totally gone. I wonder if it's best to dig the very top surface so it's weed free when i pop down the cardboard/manure. Or would you suggest just going for it and popping down the cardboard and poo ?
@jimbr0wn

@@lucybloom5463 have a look for Charles Dowding RU-vid channel, he's the no dig guy I've been looking to for my own plot, but yeah ypu don't need to rake the top off cardboard and dung and the worms will dig it for you. But get the garlic bed down ASAP LOLLL, once you start eating you're own you won't go back.

Brilliant! I will take a wee look at his channel today. Haha- I will also take your garlic advice. I use an enormous amount of garlic in the kitchen so it's on the top of my "plants to plant" list ❤️😊 il get it out ASAP
