The rental looks very nice to me. I would be perfectly happy staying there. It’s light, bright, and looks clean. I’ve stayed in more “updated” places that were not any of those.

I think it's a very cute New England place. Being clean is top priority for me. Alot better than camping in a tent the way we had to do when we were young with children.

I thought the rental looked nice. Being clean is what's most important. In a few years, you'll be happy to have the master bedroom separate! Too bad about the bonfire. I hope you have a good time anyway.

We really thought that'd be a cool experience our kids had never done, but yes we shifted and adapted. Definitely agree that bedroom separate would be great with older kids :)

The house/cottage is cute, I love that style. I didn't see where it's that outdated, maybe not showing up on camera. All the food looks good!

It's always disappointing when things aren't what you expected but I always tell myself in such situations "look at what you've got and not what you've not got" It helps remind me to practice gratitude. The little place looks fine for a little stay x

Hmm, I'm surprised you found the rental to be "outdated." Being that your channel is called "Old World Home," I didn't think you cared that much about modern finishes. The stove looked much like yours. and the cabinets are similar as well. I guess I was surprised to hear you say that.

It looks fine. Clean is way more important to us than furniture and finishes being a bit older. I like older decor so my opinion is likely different than some.

A wonderful getaway to her favorite place. It had everything she wanted- full kitchen, two baths, 3 bedrooms , washer and dryer. It’s clean. But, she’s disappointed things are “outdated”. 🤷‍♀️

As long as it's clean and has all of the amenities, I'm always good with staying in a place that's affordable! My family is in Gulf Shores, AL right now, and while the condo we're staying in isn't a five star resort(and I've stayed in five star resorts), it's clean, has everything we need, and is right on the beach for an affordable price. That's all that matters to me. That pirate museum looked like so much fun! My family loves pirate stuff.

We just came back from Gulf Shores/Orange Beach two weeks ago and had a fabulous time! It takes me days and days to find the perfect spot for vacation. The saying "you get what you paid for" doesn't work at the beach. You can be deceived by a wide angle lens, but we always have a great time

@@cheryla786 this is our first time! We're transplants to East TN from NY, and we had to check out the Gulf, which is where all the TN people vacation! It's definitely different than the Atlantic, but it's been such a wonderful trip. We hadn't been on vacation in 4 years, so it has been MUCH needed. We have had a very rough 3 years, we have 3 teens, and life is fleeting, so getting away was a must. I think we'll be back.

Whether it's a VRBO, Air-B & B, or hotel room, flexibility is the key. I remember staying in a hotel that was so cute on the outside, but filthy on the inside. My husband had to clean the bathroom floor on his hands and knees there was so much dirt. Wine and snack hour was all pre-packaged, plastic wine glasses included.😂 It was a one-night stay and pretty disappointing, but we enjoyed the outdoors and the beautiful ocean. Attitude is everything! I am so happy that your rental was clean! Love Cape Code, thank you for taking us with you on vacation!💗

If its clean and a fair cost then you can stay comfortably ( the laundry is a big bonus!) and give your honest review when you get home.

I think she was looking for something inexpensive vs. high quality and then she got disappointed. I won't rent in a place that's not close to a 5/5. If I wanted lower than that, I'd stay home.

Hilary, there is a childrens book that you need to have if you don’t already. It is by Jan Brett, and it’s called Comet’s Nine Lives. It takes place on Nantucket Island, and I think you and your kids would love it.

If your most significant worry was that the rental was outdated, I would say you are fortunate. Not everyone is lucky enough to have a healthy family or extra money to spend on a vacation. Sometimes the people who have to have things “just so” or who portray an image of perfection have the hardest time when real trials hit. Just a thought…

You havesuch a good attitude about the weather and the rental. Being flexible is certainly an important part of life and on this trip, necessary. I like how you shifted gears and found other things to do. It's nice to step away from our lives and have a slower pace and see a new place.

You are allowed to be disappointed! Sometimes part of the fun of vacation is staying somewhere nicer than your own house 😂 and I’m sure rentals in Cape Cod aren’t cheap, I can understand the disappointment in feeling misled by the photos, that has happened to us too. Clearly you still has a wonderful time. As a Washington resident I love the idea of visiting the east coast in the fall! ❤

As Hilary mentioned, she was misled by the photos and has every right to feel let down, I would too. She's grateful that it's clean, but not how it looked in the photos. I don't understand why so many commenting on here don't get that, especially if they paid a certain amount for this cottage.

I have been there being disappointed in airbnb's. It's so great to stay in them for families (especially if you are brining your dog), but can feel disappointing when it looks a little lacking. Our worst was in Paris--it was very expensive, but it was obvious that the sheets and blankets hadn't been washed for a long time. The listing said air conditioning, which we were very happy about because it was the middle of a heat wave--but it was only for one room in the apartment. We have also stayed at a few in California where we live that just look so much better online. Sometimes even with great reviews and a high price tag, the images can be deceiving online. I hope you had a good time despite that and the rain. Thank you for sharing.

Hilary don’t worry about your “downer” intro. I have a personality where if I’m disappointed it’s hard to move on until expressing it is out of my system. It helps with processing my emotions & resetting everything. So to me it felt like you were just being totally normal & trying to express valid emotions & refocus your emotions & expectations on the positive for a happy trip! Your vacation looks so fun & lovely! Thanks for taking us along. I’m a Missouri girl, so I’ve never been to Cape Cod. Even though I’ve been lucky enough to visit Maine in the fall I definitely want to see more of New England this time of year!

I love going to the Cape "with you!" I'm from the west coast and not sure I'll ever make it for a visit. It seems otherworldly when it's part of regular life for someone else. Thank you for sharing! (And I've had my share of AirBnB/hotel disappointments - some outrageously laughable. Good job making the most of it.)

The let down you felt about how your accommodations was represented was well stated. We once stayed in Paris where the owners lived there most of the time (which was never explained in the listing) and their personal possessions were everywhere including undergarments left in the dryer and medications in the bathroom. Apparently it was a multi-generational home as the neighbor told us that their elderly mother usually stayed behind to greet the guests and STAY in her room while the unit was being rented. No reviews ever mentioned that and the photos certainly didn’t match what we saw when we walked in the door.

I get the feeling of disappointment after seeing the outside. It had such Cape Cod cozy vibes. The inside just doesn't have that same feeling. I did like the bunk room with the large American Flag. But the rest, if not outdated, was not conducive to the setting. I think that's what the feeling was. Breakfast did have my mouth watering! And watching Dan and the kids walk into Oliver and Planks makes you realize that time flies!!!! All the kids are certainly growing by leaps and bounds! Love all the memories these children will take into their future lives . You guys should be so proud of the incredible job you are doing raising these amazing humans.

It's so hit or miss when you rent a house. We rented for years, before AirB&B and VRBO, in Ocean City NJ. We would always go down and look before we rented. One year it was last minute and we couldn't go and the place was clean but so outdated. It is easier now with the internet. We rented in SW Florida for 6 years and were very lucky. The only hitch was one place had no oven. Imagine bringing home a large pizza with no place to reheat it. You just make the best of it and then you have a story to tell.

We went to MV on our very first trip here just Dan and I, and then I saw photos and videos of Nantucket. Ever since our first trip to Nantucket we fell in love and would go 100 times over!

We just got back from a week get away. Reviews of the state park inn we went to were fabulous, BUT not our room. So discouraged, because I can handle a dated room but not a dirty room. Cut our trip short😢

I picked a two month winter holiday rental that had no oven (2 burner hot plate only), no dishwasher, no heater and no washing machine! I made a lot of assumptions lol.

I love this channel. It exemplifies the American dream. Ralph Lauren's principals. Hillary is such a great mother exposing her children to so much. Well read. This family, is blue collar no college degrees and Hispanic. All things that are sometimes stereotyped. People, regardless of culture or background with high values are still experiencing the American dream. These are old world values. Not just preppy, Anglo Saxon rich destinations. Hillary shares the experiences you can provide your children with a frugal lifestyle.

It's so wild to see my favorite content creator in some of my favorite places lol!! RU-vid changed my name from ABeeSeas to my email name, I don't really notice because the picture is the same, but I wondered if my regular vlogs still recognize me lol. I have no idea why it did that. Did you find anything in Couches to Candlesticks? I enjoy that store almost every time I pop into the children's consignment store too! Across from there is The Picket Fence which also has a nice variety of interesting items, it's sort of run like an antique store by the booth system so the consignors each have their own styles and ideas for pricing lol.

I never heard you complain so much in a 😔 But its interesting to me how you love to thrifty shop, (even going to get a used stroller vs. new at say a Wal-Mart), but then complained about the "out dated" place you stayed at. Perspective is everything, and definitely a first world problem for sure.
