Well the modifications are done and it's time to try the system. It worked well, but I still have some learning to do......

Cap Andy, I know you are probably asleep right now getting ready for them to move the Dali but I wanted to comment on this video. I have seen persistence before and know what it looks like....been there and done that.... Now if you look up persistence in a dictionary you will see a picture of Captain Andy running his new net for the first time!! I am proud to know that there are still folks like you around.Good job! Any time you try something different there has to be a learning curve and I know you will get it down to a smooth operation. Stay safe !!

If i may att a suggestion. Add a fourth rope. Two for the center. Color code them as to port and starboard. Pair them up with each trawl boart on that side. Hang a trawl board on each side of the boat. Never stop the boat. Add a lazy line to your sock. Attach it to either port or starboard trawl board with the top line. When you pull each pair in, hang the trawl board on a large cleat on each side. Leave the net in the water. Tickler chain in the water first and out last. But turn the boat slightly in the direction the lazy line is on. Then pull your sock in that way. Dump, retie, toss, when sock clears the net, straiten out and release boards. Repeat.

If I could pick up the rug every drag, I would agree!! I'm good for one pick up of the doors, maybe 2 if I had a good night sleep! Like the suggestion though!! MM

Great video Capt. Andy. You did good for a first run and being solo. It will get easier as you use it providing the cedar trees leave you alone.

This video was just gold! Want to know how hard our food harvesters work to provide the source of nutrients to our family tables? Just imagine if they could no longer do their job due to federal regulations. Don’t be misled, regulations are stifling and drive up the cost of all food. Elitists have long forgotten the work and skills required in the fields and on the oceans to feed a growing population. Just because you have the funds available to purchase, that does not mean the food will magically appear on the grocery store shelves. 🇺🇸⚓️

Very well said Dick. I help one of my rancher friends occasionally. I don't think most people realize how many regulations there are. It's a lot of hard work raising cattle. My step dad was a hog farmer for years until regulations kinda forced him out of raising hogs. All hogs are raised in hog buildings now. He raised hogs in the day when hogs were allowed outside. After that he just did corn and soybeans. He loved farming. Unfortunately he passed away 2 years ago. He was an Iowan farmer all his life.

Captain, I have to chuckle as several things you encountered were mirror to things I would’ve done. You did well learning a new system. I’m so sorry you encountered the cedar tree. That would’ve been a booger bear to get handled.😊

Andy... I am from Louisiana and now live in the Houston Area. I am 80 years old and have been Recreational Shrimping since I was a teen. Shrimping is work, but you are making a lot more work for yourself. First of all that apparatus you have attached to the side of your boat is totally unnecessary. I have used the following method in a Jon Boat to a 20' center console. The nets I used in La. allowed a 16' spread between the doors, and in Texas a 20' spread between the doors. With this size nets it is referred to as " Sport Shrimping"... Heres the setup. 100 foot long ropes. Large size ropes are easier on your hand. 3/4" nylon worked for me..... My Doors looked similar to yours, you may need to have weight added so the doors will dig. Watch the Iron skid marks on the bottom of the doors to determine if they are digging. OK, the net is laid out in the boat with the doors on the bottom with ropes and bridal like you have. I would do this layout before if left the dock. Float and rope for the net are going to be laying on top. You get to the area you want to start shrimping. Leave the motor in gear. through out your float and let your net play itself out. Your are doing this from the back of the boat next to the motor. As you let it out and get to the doors. lift the doors and front of the net over the motor...You are still in gear, while the doors are near the back of the boat pull on your ropes to make sure the doors are spreading the net. continue to let your ropes out, griping tight ever once in a while to keep slack out. After all your slack is out, throw your bridle over the motor. Now you are shrimping..... OK. the is similar to what you were doing with that crane apparatus you are using. Now, i think I saw you disconnect from you net and go to the back end of your net. Not a good practice.... You are ready to pull your net in. Head the boat down wind, of with the waves or current. Take the boat out of gear. Pull in your ropes into the back floor of your boat. Just before you get to your doors put you motor in gear. Pull your doors within 2 to3 feet of the transom of the boat, Tie Off the ropes to keep the doors close. Your doors are now just above the water. Speed your motor up a bit to wash "stuff" back to the pocket of the net. for about a minute or so. Now turn the motor to the left or right, all the way so that you are making a large circle....attached to one of the doors is a Lazy Line....this line is attached on the other end, about 10 feet in front of the pocket, When you turn you motor to the left or right. you turn to the side with the Lazy Line. When you pull that line you are usually standing on the side of the boat and pulling the pocket to you. Lift it into you culling box, dump it. and straighter your motor out put the net out again. I just whish I could be with you and show you. Hopefully you will get the jest of what im trying to convey....

The problem I have is I had to put that rigging on to get the bag on the boat. 30 minutes dragging sometimes weighs 400lbs. Struggle with the double blocks I have now, but manageable. Lazy line would mean I would have to take up every drag. Pulling up that net completely 10 times a day is not possible for me. The tail rope setup usually takes me about 5 minutes to get the net emptied. I've shrimped for about 30 years on boats from 15' to 80'. This system works well for me. Just gotta tweak it a bit and not do boneheaded things that cause the net to foul. Thanks for the comment and I understand completely what you are saying.

Oh Andy I hate trees and branches, quite often I have to cut the net open to get them out then repair it back as they dont go down and wont come back up. i don't know if you could work a decky line from your doors to your cod end so you could retrieve that first then pull in the loose net and the footrope, I think I might have a clip on here of the cod end coming in on my old boat.

It doesn't take much to destroy the efficiency of my net. That's what we call a lazy line. I'm worried it would twist with my tail line float. MM

Would a small rope pulley help? Like the ones on a sailboat on the rail of the boat. They have a different name but I can't think of it. When I was a kid we used them on the sailboat. I'm probably way off on that. It's been at least 40 some years since I lived on a lake in Iowa. 😄

How in the world do you just put out your trawl WITHOUT TESTING THE AREA??? AND if during your initial drag: you snag a crab trap, log, stump, TEAR THE NET, etc…you WILL NEVER KNOW until last drag when finally picking up??? Extreme Gamble!!! South Louisiana Shrimper for past 56 years while losing minimum about of time BY BEING MORE EFFICIENT AND LESS STRENUOUS! PS… add a ‘zipper’ to the extension of your trawl to easily remove debris…

Ok couple thing I see so far of the back and I’m only 4 minutes in first off doors ain’t right when I first seen them I stared at it like I bet they don’t open good! Look when those doors hit water you wana be moving the force helps them open when the doors hit water the shouldn’t lay flat like that they almost floated! Doors ain’t got enough iron on em. Also you need a lazy line a rope that runs from the bag to the door so you can untie off the door and pull your trawl in. Also you could use a winch are some cat heads. The doors chains are not right at all and those doors are built wrong I’ve never seen doors like this tho maybe where your from they might work not sure if that’s how they build them there but ima continue watching and I’ll see if I see anything else
@MinorcanMullet
@MinorcanMullet 5 месяцев назад
Unfortunately the state laws of Georgia don't allow me to use a mechanical device to retrieve the net. If I did, I would be required to have a TED on the net. The doors spread the net very well and have good shine on them. The rig works well by just dumping the bag the way Im pulling it up. Just got to keep mindful of the way the current is running so it doesn't get fouled.
@aaronnaquin8255

@@MinorcanMullet current shouldn’t matter really the doors should open up like a pare of legs as soon as they hit water also when letting out you shouldn’t throw all the line out bc your doors can flip on the way down. As we let out with our nets we pull tight assuring the doors open properly and not flip

To hang and clean a net you start at the bag. And dump everything out the front. Just a heads up

Interesting. We always started cleaning the net from where we could put a whipline on it. Some of the net hot cleaned towards the mouth, most got cleaned towards the bag. I guess the most important part was getting it clean. MM

Ight… I was hoping I didn’t see you undo the main lines and put a cork line on there and throw it off the boat… but i did.. sir I mean well then I say your asking for a tangled mess. You should get you a pulley and hook it to that boom so you can easily just pull your doors back up. I was raised by a 30 year captain I’m a 2nd generation trawler out of Lafourche parish louisiana. And I’ve never seen anyone let the doors go off the boat you lost a good bit of catch on that one bud. You should be pulling those doors up and once there up run a bit to was all the shrimp and fish to the back. Doors might shine but there not set right at all I can tell just by looking at the ropes. Door chains shouldn’t run on a door like they are on here. When you throw them over board they shouldn’t pancake and lay flat on top the water. They should stay standing when they hit the water and one door should have an angle to the right the other one left. So you see how the chains are on your doors right? On the top of the doors you need to pick up a few maybe quite a few links god I wish I could send pictures on here I’d show you. But I can’t. Another thing tickle chain how to set a tickle is easy easy. Hook the chain on one door ok and fallow the bottom line of your trawl to the other door make sure you do it tight as you go. Once you get to the other door pull 6 inches and hook it up perfectly set after. Those chains on the doors are not where they should be at all but again if set right they should work. The scratched iron should be consistent across the whole peace except from the inside on the back. As your pulling this trawl your doors should never want to stop going away from each other. I can make a shrimp trawl work podna I promise you that
@MinorcanMullet

I don't know, that rig right der will catch'em up bugs quick fast and in a hurry. No need to throw you back out liftin dem hevey doors ford or six times a da. just cut dem tow lines aloose and go back and jus pic dat bag up. das all you gotta do to put dem shrimp across da deck. What can I say. It works. just got to pay attention to what the current is doing and be dragging straight into it. Won't have any foul ups like that. And I'm only fishing in about 7'-8' feet of water. Those corks will let me get the net back.
