In a display of stunning courage, skill and persistence, the Polish ski mountaineer put down the first-ever ski descent of the Karakorum giant known as K2 in the Himalayas. Now that's more than a simple ski challenge. It's a freeride skiing (or better said steep skiing) accomplishment like never before!
How many first descents are left in the world? Deep in the Himalayas, probably quite a few, but not a single one taunted and teased ski mountaineers like K2. Just 200m shorter than Mt Everest, and a lot more dangerous, it was one of the few well-known peaks still un-skied from the summit. Until July 22, 2018 that is, when Polish ski mountaineer Andrzej Bargiel clicked into his bindings at an altitude of 8,611m and jump-turned, side-slipped and skied his way down to glory.
His descent will go down in history as one of the most daring descents ever made on skis. Following his solo ascent to the summit - without oxygen - he spent the next seven-plus hours getting down.
All filmed with a drone and a camera on his helmet, this is the raw footage of the climb and descent, an amazing ski mountaineering accomplishment.

Where's the rest of the footage ? 7 hrs for the descent and there's only two minutes of actual video. Where's his descent through the Bottleneck? Across the Traverse? I don't doubt that he did it, not at all...just saying...he had a super clear time at the top and we should at least be treated to footage of him going down the summit snow slopes and going left around the Traverse. You're telling no one was in camp IV catching footage of going down the Bottleneck? When Dave Watson did it ( skied down the Bottleneck ) there was at least a photo of both his trailbreaking and descent tracks.

Is there any chance that a ski decent is safer? The majority of deaths on K2 already occur on the descent.... A ski descent is quite a bit faster minimizing time in the deathzone and decreasing the chance of getting caught by bad weather.... however, perhaps theres a bigger chance to really screw up when skiing because you are moving faster. (Also you have to carry the dam skis up the mountain likely sucks) Would love to here an educated opinion on this preferably by someone who skis and has climbed K2. (but if you're just a bloke with an opinion that's good enough also)
@GulagExpress1
@GulagExpress1 6 лет назад
Jonathan Sackett ~ I'm not very well educated about the K2, but I'll just assume crevasses are dangerous there aswell, just like on the other giants. Skiis would spread your weight over a bigger surface and so minimize the chance of breaking through the snow into one of those deadly holes. I know this is itty bitty, but it still further minimizes the chance of dying.
@skicreature
@skicreature 6 лет назад
Thats a very good point. In general glacial crossings on skis are viewed as far safer than glacial crossings done without skis or in the summer when there is less snow. Considering that we've identified at least 2 risk minimizing factors that ski descents have, less time at altitude, and decreased risk of crevasse. At what safety point should the mountaineering community adopt ski descents as the norm in risk minimization?

@Yer_baby
@Yer_baby 6 лет назад
Jonathan Sackett I've thought about this in the past before too, but I'd say unless you were an elite professional backcountry skier, absoulutley not. You have to take in what the conditions of the terrain at that high an altitude would be like. Any sensible skiing is usually done below 3000m where the snow is still durable and powdery, and melts annually to make way for a fresh pile the following season. At 8000m (K2's height), the snow would be absolute concrete ice from all the wind blowing, harsh exposure and blisteringly cold temperatures all year long. Think of how much it sucks to ski or board on an icy day, then times that feeling by a thousand. It would be like trying to ski down the street, if it was slippery and on a 50°angle; absolutely no traction. Not to mention that if you fall at any point of your decent you will almost certainly slide several hundred metres over rocks before tumbling over a massive cliff never to be seen again. This whole mountain is known as a "no fall zone". There's a reason these things are not done very often. Everest was decended only once By a Japenese Skier, and that was like 30 years ago. For how difficult and dangerous it is to get to, it's just really not quality skiing to watch. I'm not downing the guy, i'm sure he's an amazing skier, It's just that a decent like this demands extreme caution to the point of no longer looking fun or even being a good representation of the sport in general.

You can tell he's nervous as he's skiing. Don't blame him though, I would have just curled up into a little ball at the top of the mountain and cried, lol.

How did record the aerial scenes? Helicopters can't reach that height because there isn't enough air....

"All filmed with a drone and a camera on his helmet"-that's in the description section...from other materials I know they have adjusted drone's software to make it flight that high

With what drone was this filmed? I didn't think drones would work at that altitude and temperature.

We're a fascinating species. You have people who are afraid of height, then you have people who seem completely fearless.

I don't think people understand the magnitude of how impressive it is that he got to the top in the first place, let alone the skiing.
