Adam, I think there might be some confusion between "worst" and "slowest". I've been fortunate enough to drive all the Cosworths and they actually improve with each iteration. The Sierra is the worst in my experience, as being a hatch and from the 80s, the shell just doesn't have the torsional rigidity (I also went from Sapphire to Sierra back to back, so the Sierra felt a backward step in addition to how far more dated it felt inside, as well as the lack of torsional rigidity). The Sapphire with it's metal parcel shelf and saloon based monocoque, is much more rigid and everything about it feels far more modern than the Sierra, but sadly it loses the direct and "flighty" steering of the 3dr, as the Sierra with it's homolgation origins has better designed front hub knuckles (which was felt to be too "nervouse" for modern execs that the Sapphire was aimed at LOL). Back in the day it was a common upgrade to fit the front hubs from the Sierra to the Sapphires (and was something I did to mine). The Sapphire 4x4 just has the reassurance of 4wd, but subsequently feels slower than the 2wd version, due to the power that the transmission absorbs (and has the same chocolate gearbox issues of the Escort with the budget MT75 gearbox that Ford chose to use, which limits tuning without expensive transmission upgrades). The Escort has some addditional chassis reinforcing that makes it even more rigid than all the previous cars, but is even slower than the 4x4 Sapphire due to it's homologation aero, and this is why it I think it gets the reputation for being the "worse". I think the myth has been skewed over the years from "slowest" to "worst". Hence why the 2wd Sapphire is lauded as the "sweet spot". It is more torsionally rigid than the Sierra, and is faster than both the later models due to not having the power sapping 4wd transmission, nor the aero of the Escort (which boasts one of the first ever production cars to have geniune negative front and rear lift from it's aero package). The aero is actually that good (or bad, depending on your view LOL), that above 100mph, the Sapphire's with equivalent power, will start to significantly gap the Escort due to the aerodynamic drag this car has. So to sum up - out of all the cars though, the Escort drives the best and feels the most modern, but is also the slowest. It takes over 400bhp in an Escort to match a 350bhp Sapphire, which is perhaps why it is deemed the "worst"......

I will always have a soft spot for the Escort Cosworth. I remember as a young teen hearing screeching tyres & then seeing a MK 2 cavalier SRi come smashing through a blokes fence, we rushed over to see what was going on. The young fellas in the Cav were looking rather sheepish at their off road antics & were probably thinking of making a heisty retreat. Then the owner of the now broken fence pulls out of his driveway in his Mallard Green Escort Cosworth & parks it as if to say 'if you run you won't outrun this'. Needless to say details were exchanged at that point 😂.

Great video Adam. I had a Escort Series 2 back in the early 2000's. Tuned etc around 200BHP. I sold if and bought a big turbo Escort Cosworth. In standard form the Escort was slower than the Series 2, my brother had a 2wd Sapphire which was better. After a lot of parts and Stage 3 is changed the car completely and best RS I owned. Happy DayRS!

I remember seeing one of these on the ferry going over to the IOM TT. Can't remember exactly which year but it must've been '93 or '94 because I had a '93 Honda Fireblade at the time. We came up behind the Cossie one afternoon going up the mountain out of Ramsey. I've no idea what their top speed was but I past it pretty easily on the Mountain Mile and never saw it again. It cornered like it was on rails but I expected it to be a lot faster in a straight line. They fetch crazy money now, as do Mk1 Mexicos.

Adam, be very careful with your money. Mk5 escorts are the epitomy of 90's rust buckets. The escort cosworth is even worse with its extensively hand built shell that was not "dipped" in paint prior to sealing and refinishing. From new they have unprotected seams and welds everywhere. Any of these cars that have been driven in the rain (without being extensively rust proofed beforehand) will have extensive rust throughout. If you want one save up and carefully buy one with extremely low milage and that has been kept in a dry environment (and that doesn't mean kept in the average garage). That car that Paul had will be hiding a multitude of sins - not an "honest" car. Extensive chassis and floorpan corrosion througout. Those rust bubbles that Paul pointed out will all be coming from the inside. That car will require hundreds and hundreds of hours by Someone like your man Steve who works with Paul. It is probably beyond economic repair and will never be a nice example. Count your blessings and realise it wasn't for you. If i were you i would concentrate on preserving your 3 door and building the engine. The last thing you want is to have something which is as rotten as a pear festering away in your garage. Hold fire and save up - the right car will come your way some day. I hope you take this advice coming from someone who has worked tirelessly repairing rust on escort cosworths.
@justbreakingballs
@justbreakingballs 8 месяцев назад
That's exactly what I thought run a mile. It's covered with shutz and has already had extensive welding. The sills have been done, this means it was rotten and once they've gone in one place it will be all over. I've worked in a body shop and if you've not pulled rotten panels off and seen underneath them at the rot starting in inner sections, bubbling out from spot weld seams etc etc it's hard to explain to people. If the sills have been done I'd want to know how well, was the car properly rust proofed when the rotten paneks were off etc etc. I bet the car is full of filler, the bubbles as you said are coming from the inside out and once you see a bubble it's way worse on the unseen part of the panel. Also all that floor welding. Just no no no it could be a terrible case of don't meet your hero's. That all said Adams bought it now and I like him and ultimately he's a car enthusiast who loves spending hours on his cars so he could pull it to bits get the shell stripped and any nastys put right by a car restorer and restore it, it's not beyond the realm by any means but will be a lot of work and money at some point as I think it may need some skilled panel work to get to any rot weld it etc and panel beat back right and paint. Theybare worth alot of money good so he's not polishing a turd by any means. Let's see how it goes when he gets scraping and uncovering the floor pan etc. I hope it goes well for him and it's not really rotten to the core and all the work done prior is good also depends what he's paid for it at the end of the day.
@cg7975
@cg7975 8 месяцев назад
@@justbreakingballs I think that unless you do this type of work people just don't understand. The other thing is (and again having worked extensively on rotten fords from the 90's) the steel that was in them was of very poor quality, sheafs and sheafs of rust everywhere. Ah well, as you say we wish him well, but he has for sure bought a pup.

Building one might be a challenge, the Cozzie was built on a Sierra chassis which is different to the normal MK5 Escort. Might mean you'd have some trouble with fitting an interior or body panels. You can get cosworth style bodykits for the MK5 but might look squashed compared to a real cosworth.

I have been fortunate enough to own a Escort cossie for 12 years, tuned to approx 550bhp by MADevelopments around 2010. Great car, like any car it had its pitfalls, ill be honest i part exd my 4x4 saph cossie for it, hindsight i should of stayed with the saph tbh, when tuned to the same power the saph was quicker, however the Escort captures the dream, it was my dream car back then. Massively iconic is the Escort ( follow your dream, i always do ) hence now have a 700bhp GTR 35

The escort cossie will always be a cult classic. I ve been involved in the cossie game for over 30 years. I have owned and broken over a hundred cars. I still have my own escort, which has been in my workshop since 1998. It's never seen the daylight since. My own opinion is that the escort is the worst driving cossie followed my the 3dr sierra cosworth. The best was the sapphire 4x4. You could drive it for miles, so comfortable, not like the escort, drove terrible on the road. As a rally car, it was something else.
