I work at a Porsche dealership in Canada a customer traded in his 22 911 turbo S for a Dakar the reason he traded up was because he couldn’t drive his car in the rough winter conditions. So I know for sure at least one of these cars are being used proper
Depends on the Country, i can guarantee you Enthusiasts here in the Alpine Countries (Germany, Switzerland, France, Austria and Italy) they will definitely be driven off-road and regulary. Because most Car Enthusiasts here don't buy Cars to use them as Museum Pieces (like is so common in the USA) Prost & Cheers from the Bavarian Alps
Every time I see this car, I can't help but think how great it would be for my commute, about 15 minutes on dirt roads and 15 minutes on pavement. Often muddy or snowy. But then again, If I could afford this car, I probably wouldn't need to commute.
Lada Niva or Fiat Panda 4x4 are what you need Dirt cheap (well the panda is rising but still), built like tanks, and can go pretty much anywhere (except the sea perhaps)
i mean tbh cars that appeal to enthusiasts usually dont sell too well, im sure if porsche made much more of these they would still sell like crazy but at the end of the day its still a supercar that isnt gonna make as much money as porsche's cheaper options/
@@markgeorge2200 of course it is more profitable, do you think a 911 costs much more to produce than a cayman, but it's a lot more expensive, 911 tax. This is a more expensive GTS, the GTS is already a profitable car, Charging 18k for a paint job, again, nearly all profit.
I guess they wouldn't sell much more anyway. It's a very cool, but very niche car costing ~250000 Euros. There aren't many people able to buy such a car as a weekend toy or collection piece, Porsche wouldn't be able to sell 10000 cars. Being limited makes the car more interesting for potential buyers and it's probably much easier for Porsche to plan with a limited production run. 2500 cars sounds like it's enough to satify most of the people really(!) interested in buying the car while also being low enough to keep it desirable and sell all the cars.
If i was able to buy this car and do a world tour with it, i would. 100%. What an experience that would be. Amazing car and as always, amazing content.
@@lucasRem-ku6eb just tick the 90L fuel tank option and put a 200L fuel canister on the roof rack. Problem solved. If I had the car and the time, that’s a problem I wouldn’t mind having tho
As an American, I was like "What kind of adverts???" But then I remembered that y'all folks from England call cigarettes..... (actually my lawyer wouldn't let me finish this sentence)
I hope Porsche takes these limited run 911 Dakar and see there is a market for a mass production of this model. Update: a lot of people are upset that Porsche is only making 2500 of these. But again it’s actually a smart move. The 911 Safari builds have been controversial amongst 911 enthusiasts. So this is a great way of Porsche testing the waters with them and the car communities as a whole. And as a whole from what I have seen has been extremely positive. So I think Porsche will make this off road style 911 a official package run. Also this is my ideal super car. Simply because where I live in Canada, I can go nuts on side roads and farmers roads. And play all year round.
It's just a little frustrating how little faith they have in this. It's a 2 door mini suv. Boom. Sold. Anything with suv sell. But seriously, we just don't like practical cars. We like dumb stuff. Suvs aren't practical.... A Ford bronco isn't practical. This gives the 911 a just almost comical suv like look, that just will sell. I hope they don't give up.
This has become my favourite Porsche of all time and you crushed it with this video!!! Sand, snow, autobahn…it’s made for everyday driving. Smashing!!!
We got a 997 gen2. targa4 2009 and it is the most fun car in winter. I live in Finland. With one click of handbrake it becomes rear wheel drive only. Awesome.
People who would use this car properly can't afford it, and people who can't afford it won't be using it. I'm sure 95% of these will be hidden in some millionaires garages and will never see a loose surface.
i think this car could have really benefited from having the suspension 30mm higher , its still a little low for the kind of places it would be cool to take it. and 100 more hp its a little low on power , for today standards.
Would love to see some owner took them stock to real dakar rally or baja 1000 and actually finished the race. That would raise the car value even higher
If I ever see one of these driving around I’ll be shocked. Even just a video of a privately owned one. One of these putting miles on its odometer will be about as common a sight as a dodo bird.
This would be a great all year DD for here in Tahoe, you want something sporty and fun to drive that won't get obliterated by snow, potholes and other mountain town challenges. The obvious problem is that it's about $140k too expensive to be a reasonable DD. :D
It will probably be like the the 911R. They release a special edition to test the market and create hype and then they will release it as a regular model like the GT3 Touring. I don't think they did all that development just for 2500 units
6:50 this is why I desperately love this. You literally can't take nice cars places. You have to plan. This is the most fun you ever can have with a 911, because it's unrestricted. Don't baby it, abuse it.
Imo, Porsche is the only supercar maker who doesn't come off as ridiculous if they build something like this. They have the heritage and know how to pay hommage to it. Also, they're known to build the most reliable supercars so I really buy that it can be (ab)used (the vast majority of them won't, sadly) like intended. Watched almost the whole video with a grin on my face and the bouncing off the rev limiter in the snow at the end was just heavenly! Hats off to Porsche for giving us these masterpieces!
I'm really sad that because this car is limited to just 2500 units. Most owners are going to keep it locked up in garages for years instead of letting it play in the dirt.
marketed as an offroad car, but really will be bought and used as a more durable and useable roadcar for countries with shitty/bumpy roads filled with potholes and speed bumps; still a good move by porsche. most sports-cars are too fragile for regular use on public roads in a lot of countries
Great video, fantastic car! The presentation was fun and enthusiastic, well done! Would love to have a 911 Dakar, but with more daily useable seats and minus the roll cage. Oh and with enough money in the bank to not care about using the thing. 😂
This is a REAL WORLD fast car. For me, it is the perfect 911, with the Morgan C-XT and the Huracan Sterrato, really style supercars are truly the fastest cars money can buy.
Pirelli scorpion all terrain plus tires fulfil the legal requirement of winter tires because they are snow rated and actually they do good in winter in my experience
I hope the 2500 production run is just a market test; they should make the Dakar a permanent member of the 911 lineup, maybe priced in between the GTS and Turbo. They would sell well.
only 150kg more then a honda civic type R. Pretty good considered air suspension, rear wheel steering, bigger engine, bigger tires, rollcage and bumper/floor reinforcements.
Finally a usable supercar... Just a pity that by limiting the numbers, many of these wont be used at all. Hopefully Porsche will see sense and make this a standard line up model.
The cut at 0:31 where he gets thrown around wildly. This car is way too stiff and seems to be only comfortable for slight off-roading like gravel roads. Not surprising because Porsche didn't upgrade the suspension at all and just added a small lift to a basic GTS with different tires and reinforced bumpers and underbody protection. Kinda disappointed, feels like a money grab. I mean paying €23.000 for the "rallye design package" and you get roughroads instead of rothmans because smoking is bad but you must be smoking something at porsche with that kind of offering.
If I could justify driving a 911 in the brutal Montana winters, it would be this. Would love a backseat for the kiddos and if I can dream, the gt3’s naturally aspirated 4.0L flat 6
This was an amazing video! Brilliantly presented, filmed and edited! Almost like a mini-episode of the TV show itself. Great balance of information, entertainment and a bit of humour thrown in. I'm so glad we have this on RU-vid for free.
The video would have been much better if it was presented by anyone else. The way he speaks and keeps spitting while talking, I hope topgear cleans the steering wheel and it's surrounding area before they give the car back to the manufacturer. I would definitely not buy a car that this guy has driven, especially when the covid is still out there.
Accidentally ending up in snow on a German road (it was oktober), on summer tires, with my 350Z and it sliding around and thus me being scared shitless make a realise what a hero Jack is here for doing it for fun. So much stuff to hit!
A patrol or pajero is for a completely different kind of offroad, even if removing the entire interior it is still 500kg more, less power and worse gearbox/differential system. At the speeds this Porsche goes the tip over risk in a old patrol or pajero is pretty high. Even my old Saab wagon would be better on snowy roads then a old pajero.
The Snow footage is epic, I wouldn't taking my White 2022 Roush Mustang with the Proper 3rd Pedal 6 Speed Manual Transmission in either condition. In California they Salt the roads with Gravel and spending an hour to shovel out of the Wheel well. I used to own a 2016 and decided to not take S/N:22.0001.450R Great Show 🧑🏻🦱👍🏻🏎️🏁🚩
Fantastic car and video, it is just a pity Porsche incorporate these limited edition runs for only the very wealthy which allows them to make even more money for themselves and stops the real enthusiast from getting a look in
If you have put an order on one of these and did not go for any of the rally-liveries too, you should also take a long hard look at yourself in the mirror! It is the Dakar for crying out load - it got to look like a proper Dakar-rally car!
Maybe Kunos Guys would collect data from those weather conditions some day and we could experience those cars to some extent in Assetto Corsa one day 🙏😇❤
