Must admit it’s my guilty pleasure 😋 Got a few more buckets to do in the next couple of weeks. Might tip out one of the Charlotte buckets on camera to see how they’ve done this year 👍🌻👍

Any harvest is a good harvest, saved seed and home made compost makes it even better for free Mark. ♻️Happy gardening, Terry King.

Mark, I would have been happy with the amount of potatoes that you harvested from your buckets. In the next couple of weeks or so I’m going to plant my potatoes for a Christmas harvest. Happy Gardening from Southern California.

Thanks Darry. Now that they’re all cleaned up it doesn’t look like too bad a harvest. They swift were a good size. Had some for dinner last night and they taste great too. Which variety are you doing for your Christmas potatoes? 👍🌻👍

@@marksallotmentplot I’m probably going to plant Red Norland, Yukon Gold. I’m so jealous of all the varieties of potatoes that you have the opportunity to grow in the UK. Here in Southern California in the spring you might get like four varieties in the big box store, if you buy from the supermarket they only have a few varieties of organic potatoes. So the other alternative is buying from a seed company and they charge around twenty US dollars per pound plus shipping. In the spring I did order some Sarpo Mira seed potatoes only because so many UK RU-vidrs we’re planting them. I’m planning on saving the egg size ones for my next spring planting.

Harvested 1 of my raised beds of cara yesterday as with all the rain lately in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 I was a bit worried. Well… paranoid as they were fine so left the second bed 😂 but surprising great harvest from the tatties as the weather this year has been weird for most crops

Must admit Louise I've been a bit worried about leaving mine as well with all this rain that we've had up here recently. Glad to hear yours were ok👍 Hoping the charlottes I've still got in will be ok as well.

Ahh that’s a shame about the green on the potatoes Marie. It’s usually caused by light getting to them. Hopefully next your with the buckets you can dodge that 👍🌻👍

That's not bad at all, and we had rubbish weather really. What you said about the spent compost... I think Steve, Green side up, said he used the same compost 5 years in a row. I can't remember if he added new compost, or feed - maybe both. I think Tony will know. It was just a thought, a spent compost only though will be great Idea, and may save us some money. I'm always up for that 🙂

Wow, a great size on those Swifts Mark. I have added nutrition to bagged compost and its been ok this year, not high yields. I grew Red Duke of York (beautiful variety) Charlotte and International Kidney. None had a great yields, the dry and heat made it hard to keep on top of the watering early on. My mains in buckets I just harvested some CAras, good looking on the outside, cut into them and lots of brown spots. Very weird not sure why. Hoping it was just one bucket. Also go Sarpo Mira which I hope will be ok as the weather is perfect for blight now so keeping an eye out for that.

Sounds like you’ve got loads on the go Dawn. Shame about the Cara. I did them last year in the buckets and they grew huge! Never seen potatoes go as big as they have before. Ahh Red Duke of York is one I fancy trying next year. They’re always the fastest selling at our local seed potato sale and I always end up missing out! 👍🌻👍

I think that’s a pretty good harvest from a bucket, I don’t think I’ve ever had more even in new compost and I’m definitely using my compost again to save costs I’m going to replenish my buckets overwinter with kitchen scraps , and some of them are already growing leeks in the first early’s buckets.

I'm only really in my second year of this gardening journey and so far have only ever grown "volunteer" potatoes... having said that I think I got about 17kg of them earlier this year. I'm debating trying seed potatoes if for no other reason than to try some varieties that aren't available from the shops. But it's winter here in Australia at the moment and the volunteer potatoes are looking like they have suffered a bit from the weather... we shall see how they go. I would certainly like to see the spent versus fresh compost comparison :D
@marksallotmentplot
@marksallotmentplot Год назад
I’ve got a volunteer potato growing at the allotment at the mo. Luckily it’s in a bed that only got the asparagus at the other end so plenty of room for it to grow 👍 That’s one of my favourite things about growing my own food - all the different varieties you can grow that aren’t in the shops. I’d definitely recommend having a look at seed potato suppliers when things are starting to warm up and get some on the go 👍🌻👍

Hi Mark Not sure if I missed it or you did not say, how many seed potatoes did you put in the baskets. To be honest I been using the same compost for my potatoes in buckets for about 6 years now, I just put Fish Blood and bone in with some spuds galore. My first time growing Swift this year and not very impressed with Harvest or taste. Great update mate and well done. 👍👍👍👍👍🥔🥔🥔🥔🥔

Hi Mark, that's a good idea in trying out one with new compost & another with spent compost. I have used spent compost & I must say I'm quite happy with my results. Charlotte were smaller than last year but, not too bad. Pretty decent harvest of potatoes. Thanks for sharing and take care 😊
@marksallotmentplot

Thanks Christine. The tatties weren't too bad in the end with using the spent compost. I think next year I might give them a little booster feed part way through the season just to see if that makes a difference. Already planning the next experiment 👍🌻👍

I am growing potatoes (main crop) in containers at home and in the ground at Plot.82 in allotment. Potatoes in containers at home the shaws are massive and healthy. Where as potatoes at allotment the shaws are a lot smaller and look like they are dying back already......any ideas, bearing in mind that we just took over plot about 4 month ago (complete beginner to this allotment thing)..?

@marksallotmentplot Год назад
Hmm that’s a bit of a mystery about the ones in the pots and the ones in the ground. Are they all the same variety of potato?

@peterdillon2628 Год назад
Hi Mark - Nice clean crop. I'm still trying to find our prefered 1st. earlies as several so far in the buckets don't have the new potato taste. Are yours producing that sought after taste? Maris Bard has come out tops so far. Arran Pilot also good. Might try 50% soil and 50% compost as an experiment next year. Those in the ground do taste "New".
@marksallotmentplot
@marksallotmentplot Год назад
Thanks Peter. Know what you mean about that new potato taste and the buckets. Think you might be onto something using half compost half soil next year👍 I’m quite impressed with the swift variety taste wise and they got to a decent size. Haven’t tried the Belle De Fontenay yet as they’re apparently best left a wee while before eating. Red Duke of York are always the fastest selling at our local seed potato sale, might be something in that but I’ve never tried them. Might be one for next year 👍🌻👍

Nice one Mark - gotta love potato reveals LOL I find the "new style" containers with the slots on the sides at the bottom seem to attract slugs so I am only using them for carrots etc in the future. For me, (in general biting my tongue after using so many crap composts), the compost is just the medium for supporting the spuds. It is what you add to the compost that makes decent tubers. I regret just using the bagged compost as it came for the sake of the videos as my yield is way way down on previous years! Having said that, it will be okay in 2024 when I "feed" it 🙂
@marksallotmentplot
@marksallotmentplot Год назад
Know what you mean about the composts Steve. Been very hit and miss with the different ones I've tried this year as well. I think I maybe should have given the tatties a little booster feed part way through the season just to keep them going. There's always next year to try that one 👍🌻👍
@DigwellGreenfingers
@DigwellGreenfingers Год назад
@@marksallotmentplot The trouble with the "new" composts (and gardening in general LOL) is that there are too many variables. For years I grew spuds in buckets with Mother Earth compost. Every year, fairly dependable yields with only the watering to worry about. I remember from Terry King's experiment a few years ago where he grew spuds in all manner of different media - yes they will grow but some better than others. Hard to plan and balance when you do not know what you are growing in! Rant over LOL
