You noticed right away just how wasted this guy was and still he played like that. 😎 The last trilly bit before Sammy says "Ladies and gentlemen..." and the band comes in, was from his guitar solo on Michael Jackson's "Beat It".
Bro, not related to this video or band but, you MUST do Oliver Anthony- Rich Men North of Richmond. Surprised you haven't yet. You're welcome in advance lol
Man changed the way an entire generation looked at the guitar and how it could sound and be played. And the world of rock and roll was never the same since. RIP to one the GOATS. Legendary as legendary gets.
Nicely said brother I was fortunate enough to see him 4 times the most memorable was the 1st album standing 20 feet from the marshalls and hearing him play Eruption live at 16 years old and I'm now 61 is a memory I'll take to my grave that tune never gets old.
@@electric8668 Why always this way of bringing back everything to Hendrix ? Two men changed completely the guitar world : Jimi and Eddie. Hendrix opened a new door in the guitar playing, for sure, but without Eddie Van Halen, the guitar world would absolutely not be the same. Tapping, artificial harmonics, violoning, and so many technics have not been taught to Van Halen by Hendrix...Eddie invented a new way of playing guitar, even if Jimi has influenced him.
Don't mistake the cocky swagger and LA bar scene origins. This is the creme de la creme of rock and roll, *and* if you're a listener of full albums, they're definitely art rock as well. RIP to the GOAT.
Truth. I feel like his son, Wolfgang ,is continuing the family legacy. He's his own person carving his own path .It's just nice that he's jamming and keeping the gene pool alive and well.
This actually started as a warm up exercise before they did their gigs at clubs, backyard school parties. While Van Halen was recording their debut album (1978) they decided to record this solo just in one take. From 1978-2015 Eddie would either add parts to it or take parts away.Never played it the same way.He experimented with different sounds he could get from it.He even built that guitar himself with various guitar parts
Edward Van Halen changed the entire rock guitar scene and turned it on it's ear with the original version of Eruption. It was a 1:42 guitar master piece and was less then 2:00 minute solo. He continued to change guitar playing until his death. R.I.P... His son Wolfgang will continue on from here.
I agree with you on Wolfgang man. He's a whole different flavor of rock talent... it's nice to see the van halen name will be carried on with high level talent but also in a whole new way. Wolf sounds very different than his father and uncle. And that in itself is beautiful... he's not just a clone. And IMHO I think he's a better drummer than Alex hahaha. But Ed is king... the man's playing is so unique..
@@Britton_Thompson Wolfgang is sooooo much more then just a Bassist, go check out Mammoth WVH, not only did he write the first album he played every instrument, sang ever lyric, did all of the production and promotion, he is everything Eddie and Alex in one package
I love the straight-up honest reaction. Not every listener is going to love every track they ever hear or every performance they ever see. It's refreshing to hear someone's honesty that "hey, this was cool, but just not for me." I'd rather hear that than be pandered by some phony over-the-top reaction. Keep it real Polo!
Listen to the album version, this live 'for the fans' version is basically an anthology of Eddies most famous guitar licks intertwined into the Eruption solo. On the album Eruption serves as the intro to their cover of the Kinks - You Really Got Me, it's shorter, tighter, and it is amazing, like people remember when they were the first time they heard Eruption (high school parking lot in my '68 firebird).
I agree this is an improvised extended version for the crowd. I prefer the studio album version much better. He should listen to the orginal version to get a true Eruption reaction. He wouldn't even be able to connect to two versions as the same.
This is what happens when Dad doesn't come in to your room and say, "Knock it off, you're gonna break that thing." Thank you Mr. Van Halen. Thank you very much.
This shows your honesty in your reviews. You don’t react just to pander to your audience. I grew up with Van Halen so I recognize the mashup of several solos from different songs. I’d be interested in you reaction just to eruption. Keep it up! Love your reactions and love you my brother. Thanks!
This is the first time I've seen you react. Eddie played so well because he had a gift. He also never realized it was work. It was just fun. He worked very hard.
Just wanted to say since i've followed you the other day I've been binging your videos and really enjoying them a lot. You as a person is what sticks out to me, not just how chill and down to earth you are but also your open mindedness and intelligence. You got a good way of thinking and your view on things. Keep up the good work man!
Keep in mind that this performance is 4 different solo songs he did put together, Eruption on the album is like 2 and a half minutes long. Van Halen always has amazingly fun guitar
The first 5 Van Halen studio albums each have a short guitar interlude/solo by Eddie. The first and most popular is Eruption. This live clip is a mixture of those solos. Spanish Fly, Cathedral and Tora! Tora! Among them. EVH revolutionized guitar playing by introducing Rock to classical techniques like hammer-ons and pull-offs. RIP
This was fun. Much, much longer then the album version which is more palatable in my opinion. Can’t deny the energy of the crowd, though. Wow! Thanks, Eddie, for adding such great tunes to many of our teenage years. Hope your rockin’ with Hendrix and all the rest of the greats that passed into the musical heavens.
Well I’ve never seen you not pausing a video before and that was 13 minutes of playing. Eddie did the guitar play for Michael Jackson’s song “Beat it” for free to help Michael move up the charts since that song. Eddie inspired many guitarists with his guitar playing innovations. RIP EDDIE!
It's so amazing to see/hear how Eddie (RIP) plays the guitar with so much passion, love, care, energy, excitement, joy, and adventure like he's having the best conversation ever with his best friend in the whole wide world..💯💥✌🎸
My first ever concert at the age of 19 was Van Halen (1991) - I got to see this live from the 23rd row (though it wasn't this extended version)! One of the all-time greatest, obviously.
When I was a young teen and they came out in 78 it blew us ALL away. Just giving you a view from an older perspective from the 70's. Saw them 3x before 1980. The eighties were awesome!
I remember real Rock fading and so far in between and then Van Halen hit the airwaves and a friend went near bazerk, saying, "You've got to hear this. This group has it and brought it back. What Rock!
the whole greatest thing is really getting worn out.thre absolutely is no greatest anything. greatest team, greatest quarterback, greatest drummer, greatest band, greatest singer. thre is no way to ever tell.
It's hard to overstate Eddie's influence. When this first came out, every kid I knew who played guitar -- wanted to play THIS. And what's intresting is how much classical music is in this (Bach, mostly) and, at the same time, it's the ultimate in rock music (the swagger, the distortion, the tone and of course -- that shit-eating grin). He was one-of-a-kind!
When I seen this in the thumbnail, I knew that this wasn't going to be your gig. I've been a huge Van Halen fan all of my life. They were the music of my youth and I have seen them probably a dozen times. Back in the beginning those guitar solos were pretty cool but I was over them by the second time I seen them. That was usually the time I went to take a leak or grab me a beer. Please don't let it deter you from checking out their catalog because it's some of the greatest American rock you will ever hear.
Saw them live, twice…did not disappoint!! This guy was next level, no question. Yes, lots of bands came out of the LA bars, these guys went from clubs to stadiums in the blink of an eye. ❤️🎥❤️great reaction.
I can see people who aren’t familiar with the instrument or the music can say its crazy stuff he can do but not be amazed by it. Back then he was the guitar god that a lot of people loved and still love. Thanks for listening to Eddie play. He is an idol of mine and the reason why I play guitar.
There's a lot of really good music out there. Growing up I only listened to Rock, but as I got older, my music taste started to change, including, R&B, Rap, Country, Classical, you name it. It's good to see people broadening their horizons and discovering new music. Keep it up POLO, you're open to listening to a genre with a lot of great bands and Van Halen has a lot of great music.
I had the same reaction back in 1967 the first time I heard Jimi Hendrix. I was 10 and even today it still amazes me that he did things over half a century ago that nobody has done. He was the chief influence for Stevie Ray Vaughan. I strongly suggest you check out “house Burning Down” from Electric Ladyland and just about any studio song and live dhow. It’s worth the hunt. 🎸
I think if you grow up with music all around you, you see and recognize the talent. You know what it takes, and how much dedication and how much hard work it takes to reach that level. I think that is the reason I listen to so many different genres of music. Everything from classical, to folk, to God love it Motown (my dads favorite) all the way to All Rock! The early and middle Rock seems to be my favorite, mostly because that's when I grew up. Still love it today!
I can see on your face you are saying to yourself, "how is he doing all of that"???? I agree... I don't think I've ever seen you speechless for almost a whole performance!! Love it
Did you know? 1. Bro was drunk the entire solo 2. He almost had a blackout during the live 3. He completely forgot everything what he did after the live Rip EVH ur a goat
Eddie was a Guitar Virtuoso. He had a "gift." He was the “engine” of Van Halen. Not only was he a master of the guitar 🎸 but he was a master of his own instrument. He knew how to create sounds with THAT GUITAR. I saw them many times in Concert and he was never less than AMAZING !! We miss you EVH 🙏🏽 #VanHalenRocks
I grew up a Van halen fan together with all the hard rock and heavy metal from the 80's and 90's. This solo still amazes me every time. He gets so many sounds out of that guitar that he built and continually modified himself. At times it sounds like a guitar, a synth, violins as he taps pulls, picks and beats the guitar. It almost wants to talk at times. Just mind blowing. He invented so many techniques and has been copied over and over. In this solo you hear so much from both eras of Van halen (with David Lee Roth and later with Sammy Hagar- shown here as a singer). There are even parts that sound like classical music on an electric guitar... Crazy good. He's self taught and plays so many instruments.
LOL, BRO, AFTER I TYPED My COMMENT ? I SCROLL BACK UP ,,,, And Your FACE WAS ABSOLUTELY The SAME FACE I HAD AS A YOUNG ROCKER. THANK YOU 4 THAT MAN 🥺, PL&M MFRz...
The first time I heard the original her ruption off their first album changed my life I was 14. This is a compilation of every solo he did on every album since. Absolute genius and inspiration to countless. Thank you Eddie For The Memories and the lessons that you inadvertently gave us.
As someone who grew up listening to Eddie play, I respect your honesty. That means more to me being a real person with their own feelings and emotions than someone who fakes emotions just for the “like” counts. Props to you my brother for keeping yourself real. Mad respect from me!
That my brother is the man who brought finger tapping to the masses he didnt invent it but he did things that no one else was doing at the time listen to the eruption solo of the Van Halen 1 album and you will here it from 1978. And you wont be disapointed he was a master at his craft he inspired millions of guitar players. He is the reason i picked up a guitar. I was 16 when that came🎉 out and it never gets boring. RIP Eddy🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
Some people dont feel the notes as some other people do and that is absolutely fine. I respect you for not pausing the video and not acting fake. Thats why you get the like. :D
The way he is able to just hit those harmonics at will, 100% of the time continues to give me hope that I will one day be able to do it at will 75% of the time.
Woo hoo! Rock N Roll!!! My high school days. Put a bunch of instruments in your garage and watch them come. Loved the 70's. Best time musically to grow up. This Christmas time, instruments for your kids!
I watched an interview with him and he said learned how to do all that because when he was starting out, he could not afford the effect pedals, so he worked on doing it without them.
This was a showcase of his talent, so when you hear him play an actual song you know what he's capable of and when you do hear those songs you'll get a deeper appreciation of the whole band especially his brother Alex on drums.
A producer heard Eddie warming up with what was around 3:30 of this solo and told him they needed that as an intro. It grew and grew into one of the most legendary musical performances ever.
Eddie's just messing around for the crowd. He wandered around the house doing this all day. He made coffee and read bedtime stories while playing like this.
saw van Halen in 78 and fell in love with Eddie forget the lead singers literally layed my head down at my desk when hearing of his passing there is no vanhalen without eddie
FYI, this isn't "Eruption". It's his entire live solo from the "Live Without A Net" video. Eruption is one small part of it, originally on the first VH album from the 70s. He's actually combining several different solo pieces here, beginning with "316".
An honest reaction is appreciated. Much of this exhibition of skill was based on classical composers music. And it’s more instructive for guitarists than general music lover’s playlists. Was he one of the guitar masters? Undeniably, yes.
What he said sums it up. Its more for guitarits to drool over than casual listeners. Appreciate the real reaction for sure. Although for me, EVH is the reason I picked up a guitar in the early 80s. So I get it. Peace.
Most reactors aka content creators feel like they can't say anything negative about a video. I like the fact that you don't do that and give us your honest opinion.
I NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING THIS VID. So Polo, Eddie was a virtuoso, self taught, did not read music, and new tableture had to be invented to get this solo written down. Like many entertainers, he was shy. I cried when he died.
Thank you for admiring this guitar virtuoso and not interrupting him every 30 seconds like many others have. He inspired leagues of young guitar players and musicians in general.. He will forever be remembered and loved. R.I.P.
I guess that's the case for most people who don't play the instrument - they won't gonna appreciate the skill and musicality of this performance on the level the players do.
The thing is, he was playing like that in the 70s. When their first record came out, I was already a touring pro and we thought the record sounded like it was from the future.
As a kid I was more into pop music from 60s - 70s and wasn't into any heavy metal music . I was into disco at the time with synthesizers . Then I heard Eruption . Then I was all hard rock . This solo is from Live Without A Net concert video .
A lot of classical music in this crazy guitar....like yngween malsmsteen another virtuous guitar men on classic guitar...snd heavy metal...marching out great album.
Great reaction!! I've seen this countless times, and it still amazes and engages me - RIP Eddie, a master at the axe! Just so you're clear Polo - this solo wasn't just the song Eruption (which you should check in it's own right for context). This was no less than 3 other 'songs' Eddie has done, plus a bunch of other noodling. The first part when he's sitting down is a song called 316 (so named as it's the birthdate of his son Wolfgang, off the album For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge) - beautiful & calm ditty. Then it goes into a section of Eruption (most of the parts where the tapping technique is involved is from this). The section where he's controlling the volume knob to make he guitar sound like a violin is from a song called Cathedral (off Diver Down). Yes, this is a self-indulgent showcase of most of what made Eddie great - his guitar pyrotechnics was game changing and genre defining! He may not have created all those techniques, but he sure as hell mastered them! Cheers.
What was great about Eddie is he could do anything on a guitar. I heard at least 6or7 different instruments. He could make it play anything. He’s up there having the time of his life. RIP and thanks for making my youth just that much more enjoyable. 😁
This was bits and pieces of various songs and instrumentals from their albums. So to get a good sense of the music, listen to the albums. Start with the debut Van Halen, from 1978. His guitar was like nothing heard before at the time. Eruption is the second track and it’s just a 3 min or so instrumental set between songs 1&3, and it blew us away. It’s non-stop from there and I think you’ll find some things you like. The first six albums feature lead singer David Lee Roth and this is the band that, to me, defines Van Halen. They split with Dave in 1985 and set out with Sammy Hagar with a new album and tour in 1986. This is the tour from which this solo clip comes. A lot of people love them with Sammy; not so much for me, but Eddie was the best and will always remain so.
If you were thinking "I have never seen or heard guitar like this before" don't worry, we all thought the exact same thing when we saw and heard this for the first time.
I feel bad for you kids. I was the first child born into a small family of 60 and over in 1964. So Granny sang Dean Martin, Hank Wms., Roger Miller, and loved Satchmo. Mom sang R&B Black Gold & Elvis, and we watched Soooooouuul Train and The Midnight Special.. And Uncle Al sang "Suwanee River" accompanied by a little bell to amuse me. And Van Halen was our favorite in high school. And P.S. David Lee Roth was wearing chaps with no pants once in a concert here in KC, and we were on the floor, eighth row. Surreal.
Welcome to the world of Hard Rock/Heavy metal, where you get to discover most amazing bands and musicians with unique style, talent and skills you *NEVER THOUGHT EXISTED.* Go on this Rock/Metal journey, for it's gonna be a hell of a ride! *MORE* Van Halen please.
What you said about re-listenability is why classical guitar albums and even guitar only albums like Satriani don't sell as well as an album with 4-6 min songs on it... But seeing this kind of show case is exactly what I want when I pay to go to a concert.
Everyone under the sun has reacted to this one, which no doubt is a stellar testimony of his guitar prowess over the years. You would have been better served to have reacted to the original "Eruption" from their self titled debut album "Van Halen". It clocked in at 1:47sec. That is what the world first heard in 1978 and it immiediatly went Platinum. At that point no one had ever heard anything like this before. No one since Jimi Hendrix would revolutionize not only the playing of guitar, but how guitars were built, how guitar amplifiers were built. Whole industry trying to recreate his sound from that first album and other periods of his career. How's that for influential?! "I'm The One" is a no brainer for your next Van Halen song from that iconic debut album called Van Halen.
