Habibati! We're back with another music reaction, and this time it's Disturbed with their live rendition of 'The Sound of Silence' by Simon & Garfunkel.
What a great musical arrangement and performance. David Dreamypants really put on a vocal masterclass with this.
I hope you guys enjoy this video, and keep those recommendations coming!

Sadly there will be another version. Probably long after we are dust and it will be much darker and much sadder. We can still avoid what it predicts but I doubt we will wake up and listen. I fear we are doomed to the sound of silence. Honestly though the fact that I am commenting on an "Arab Man's" RU-vid channel gives me hope. No slight or slur intended.

When you only focus on David, you can also hear it. It's really not much, he just usually has even more control. But luckily he's so well trained in his craft, that unless you really pick it apart, you can't really hear it. And maybe it also gave this particular performance just that tad more tenderness. Imperfections can be perfection - so to speak ;-).

David Draiman...a voice to die for! A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion and back on a dime. He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before.....just hauntingly beautiful tonal properties to it! An awesome talent and obvious training to deliver what he does!! David was classically trained as a cantor who is someone who sings liturgical music and leads prayer in a synagogue. His "vocal fries" are kept moist and not dry to preserve his vocal chords, and he can growl with the best of them without damage. Compare this to "Down With The Sickness."

So I have been watching a number of reactions to this live performance by Disturbed to find the nuances of those best reactions that are really appreciating what they are hearing “within” this performance, not just reacting because it’s popular and will bring the clicks and views. You my friend hit the top of the appreciation ladder for sure. There is a captivating that needs to be fresh when one hears this performance for what it truly is; probably one of the most spectacular music/vocal/message performances ever recorded. I am INCREDIBLY critical when I feel there is greatness in a performance and choose to dive into the gritty detail to pick what I feel is in this list I hold as “The greatest vocal performances. As an example, Pavarotti singing Nessun dorma from Puccini’s Turandot in his 1994 performance in Los Angeles was absolutely flawless and at the ending of the vocal, Pavarotti hit that closing climax more exacting than any time I had ever heard it which is the signature emotional hook of that piece. The combination of every musical and emotional element was absolutely brilliant and it was clear in the close up of his face that Pavarotti himself knew he had just achieved absolute musical perfection. Another is Whitney Houston absolutely cementing the legacy as the greatest rendition of the Star Spangled Banner at the Super Bowl in 1991. Her account of what emotional rush went through her body when she felt the collective wash of pride at that exact moment when the music crashed its start was an amazingly telling timeline as to how that sort of brilliance can push out of someone with such otherworldly musical talent and capabilities. I am a drummer, a musician. I have an incredibly critical ear like many folks who love the unvarnished perfection in live performances and can absolutely capture every detail. David Draiman and the ensemble gathered for the Conan performance here created what in my opinion is one of the overall greatest live performances ever witnessed using the brilliant poetry from Simon and Garfunkel. The original is excellent. But in this version, Draiman paints every verse with a definitive vocal color so exacting to the lyrics with haunting precision. The supporting instrumental backdrop literally could not have risen to a more exacting emotional canvas to accompany where Draiman went in every measure. You my friend heard all of that in detail and I can tell. Very similar to the silence at the close of a spectacular performance where the witnessing audience needs a second or two to come out of the dream state trans they were just thrust into, the reactions where there is a few seconds to gather thought at what was just witnessed are the reactions that speak the most truth. Your appreciation and empathetic envy is obvious and that right there is what gives you the top reaction spot for me. You saw it right from the start and really got it. Excellent. Thank you for an honest reaction. 👍🏻😎👍🏻

@ScottKennedy It's called the 'Perfect Silence'...that span of time when the voice stops, and the audience is so spellbound, you could literally hear a pin drop. Every singer yearns to hear that just once in their lifetime. You definitely hear that at the end of this song.
@Far2hip
@Far2hip 3 года назад
Well Arab Man, I truly appreciate the accolades. Seriously. I have genuinely considered doing this sort of thing and now that I can see that there is a pretty sizable thirst for, I guess one would call it “affirmation”, knowing others see and hear these types of things the same way you do. I’ve simply had this passion for the finite detail and nuances that many don’t realize are the differences between performances where one makes you appreciate some very good musicians, while the next makes you not understand why you’re crying. I know exactly why particular pieces draw tears from certain folks when they actually don’t truly comprehend the lyrics of a song. Specific dynamics in a musical piece can absolutely do this in the most unsuspecting ways and it’s fascinating to me how unpredictable it can be very much depending on how one is actually listening to the dynamics of the piece. It’s very cool stuff!! So in the midst of all the other things I do (the big one being the development of a tech method for GPS systems I have acquired a patent for that is absolutely revolutionary but will need some huge funding to fully realize), once I find myself a clear opening to do it right, I think I am going to take that suggestion. I thank you for the added push my friend!! Undoubtedly you will get some credit for that, lol. I have had some interesting comments regarding my detailed analysis and when I thought I was simply talking too much, lol, others truly appreciated that someone was able to take the simple “Wow” and put it into words. When I have the time, I’m going to do it!! 👍🏻😎👍🏻
@Far2hip
@Far2hip 3 года назад
De Co, you are absolutely correct. That “Perfect Silence” and the sort of jaw dropping emotional connection brought on by the emotional tension and the feelings of irresolution of an emotional description presented with absolute clarity is perfectly presented in Brian Crumbs performance of “Creep” on America’s Got Talent. He did an AMAZING rendition of that song to the point it visibly made Howie Mandell literally uncomfortable in his chair. Even Simon Cowell described the presentation as breathtaking and he was absolutely right. If you haven’t seen that, it is well worth a watch. It’s stunning.

I really don’t know how you came up on my feed, but ya did. I’m all for giving new young people the chance to react to music. First, there is no bad music. For all, it’s just a matter of personal taste. I was around when Simon and Garfunkel’s version came out. The 60’s was a decade of Rock, Pop, and Folk music. Simon and Garfunkel definitely fit in with Folk music. It was just a way to tell an entire story in one song. Folk music was a way that artists or musicians could make their views, political or not, known to the world. One cannot do a cover of a legendary song, by legendary artists, unless you can do the song justice. David Draiman, and the rest of Disturbed, really did Simon and Garfunkel justice. Only the greats can do justice to the greats. Simon and Garfunkel themselves are huge fans of Disturbed’s rendition. David is classically trained, and in this particular song, you can hear the absolute greatness of his voice. For those that say this was better than the original were probably not even born when it came out. It’s one of the most iconic, legendary songs of all time. Disturbed gave a legendary song new life and did a damn good job of it. I love both renditions, for different reasons. For the younger generation, and even people of my own (which really drives me nuts cuz they should know, but don’t), this song was Simon and Garfunkel’s protest of the Vietnam War. As I said, Folk music was all about the story.

I showed this to my wife, raised in the Hong Kong style absorbing of culture. She made one point, while she loved Disturbed version, she felt that the original's slow and downplayed exit was more powerful. I came around to her ideas, as the continued power chords did indeed obscure the message by the end. Both versions are powerful in their own way.

@@Angotha I'm not an ancient. Pushing 40 this year. Fought in protests in Hong Kong, and supporting those back home in the states. Don't let your prejudices, cloud your reactions. The reason the original is more powerful is because it speaks slowly and softly. The words and the reasons need digestion. Disturbs' version is more powerful on a musical level, but the original leaves a longer lasting impression.
@lovetocheerx0x0

Angotha why so angry?? Why did you attack David for his views? RU-vid is a forum for everyones opinions, not just your own. To call someone ancient is so disrespectful. Your parents did a lovely job raising you. You really shouldn’t even have an opinion on this because you can’t understand the totality of the words of this song, and what it truly means like we “ancients”. We can all see, by your snotty attack, that you’re still a baby 👶 in diapers for and have a lot of growing to do. But remember my dear, life goes by in a flash, and you too will be ancient before you know it. In the meantime, suck on your “baba” tonight and try to grow up a little before you make asinine remarks on something you know nothing about.

On a side note, as she brought up ancients and how they can't understand the feelings, they should check out 2RG or 2 rocking grannies. Lovely channel. As for me, I am older yes, and my playlist is still mainly comprised of Rise Against, MCR, SoaD, The Decemberists, Atreyu, Bad Religion and Bullet for my Valentine. (I'm a little behind the times musically as an expat for nearly 2 decades.) Older doesn't mean we don't understand or connect, it is just that experiences have taught us to look at things from many different angles (unless we are of the type who sadly never grew). A little more understanding would not hurt anyone. Anyway, thanks for responding and have a great day.

Am an 80 year old grandma... a fan of Disturbed... David has a unique voice and such good good control I love to hear him sing... Paul Simon liked his version so much that he even put it on his online page... he knew David had made it his ..... I did not get the same feeling with the original version... it was good but not like this .... this brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. It gives me goosebumps.... and he was sick the night he did this... can you imagine? what talent he has...❤

You are correct. This was the one song that Simon & Garfunkel refused to give up to the studio as a demo. It got them signed.

I was at the 1976 performance of Simon & Garfunkel‘s version of the song. What makes this young man’s vocal abilities beyond exceptional is, during this life performance he was suffering from a very bad head cold!

The Simon/Garfunkel version vs Distrubed's/Henk Poort's versions always reminds me of the song 'Isolation' which also has similar versions. The original by Joy Division gives the sense of someone feeling isolated and feeling depressed. Therapy's version is a much faster grunge-like version that evokes images of someone bouncing around an isolation cell. But both are bout the same sense of isolation. Therapy got tens of thousands of people to scream "ISOLATION" at a concert though :-) Similarly here the original is more about being sad/depressed at the inability to communicate. In Disturbed's version some anger at that inability shines through and the distortion in the voice adds to that sense. This makes it more poignant to us today I think. Henk's version somehow feels more uplifting (to me) at the end. I love his version most because he doesn't start with a distorted voice but brings it on halfway, and because of the context of the Beste Zangers show where fangirl Floor Jansen completely captivates and floors Henk (and all the other participants) and he did that song that way for her. Each version of the song is wonderful in its own right.

Love all three renditions of this song....yes all THREE. hehe. A lot of people don't realise or have forgotten that Nevermore covered this song too in the early 2000's, theirs was a real dark, ominous and heavy version which is like another completely different song yet again.

@MetalLover James, have heard the Nevermore's redition as well. The instruments sound great indeed, but (and please, don't hate me for this, it's just my humble oppinion) the voice is kinda lost in the background, so those not knowing the original or the lyrics loose half of the message. It's the reason I have been reluctant to listen to the Disturbed's redition at the beginning. Having grown up with the original but already knowing Disturbed's previous songs and being a huge fan of theirs, I was afraid I would be dissapointed by them for the first time. Really glad I was completely wrong. 😃😃

Your facial reactions say it all !!! This is an amazing cover of a brilliant song, 1st done by Simon & Garfunkel warning us, if we don't change our ways we are headed for destruction, & Disturbs version is angry, because we didn’t listen to the warnings 😌 Enjoyed your commentary & reaction!

@@ArabManReacts hope you do, I personally love that one even more. A bit less raw but that's probably why I like it better. For me here it's just a bit too much where Henk dosed it a bit better. Most likely accidentally as it was for him the first time he sang with distortion (specially for Floor 😉) being a classical/opera singer, singing with distortion is simply "not done".

David Dreiman has said that he is a classically trained singer and you can hear it in the control he has, in the fullness of his ribs and his beautiful election. Then his raspy growl! OMG! He gives my "the goosies" EVERY time I hear this.
