First Flight and Flying Lesson in Cirrus SR20 1 of 2

Roundtrip mission between KBED Hanscom Airfield and KHPN Westchester County Airport to try flying for the first time. Guided by my flight instructor, Sean from Mike Goulian Aviation (see link below), I learn the basics of flight starting with taxiing, then straight and level, and some small maneuvers in flight.

Thank you so much! I've been flying 43 years, but tomorrow morning is my first time left seat w/instructor in a Cirrus. I've been wondering how the numbers differed from C172 / C182 and your video was perfect. Also a trip down memory lane since I used to fly out of Hanscom for 20 years (80s & 90s), the name Goulian brings back lots of great memories. (Mike's Dad Myron was my DPE for my instrument ticket in '85, Rita never forgot me even after being away so many years, what a great flying family they are.) Blue skies to you sir and thanks again!

People don't pay enough attention to the fact that VFR minimum requires 500' below clouds.

We call that "skud running". You think I can maintain VFR fine I bet, until the ceiling drops out on ya! Ha ha you're in the clouds and pushing the plane lower like mad to break back out. It was supersizing to see an instructor not mention this to you. Continued flight into IMC is not recommended on your first flight but can be "thrilling". :)

Warning, a Cirrus is a seductively wing-rockin' great airplane. Since you were exposed to a comfortable, attractive, and capable airplane, all other rides will pale in comparison (in my subjective opinion, of course).

so funny to hear u say that u focused more outside than inside. That's good. I did just the opposite with my first few lessons. Why Cirrus & not Cessna 172 or Piper Cherokee?

The CAPS system in the Cirrus offers the extra safety component that made it feel OK to give this a try. With a wife and two kids, it's important for my family to know that if things get really bad, the plane itself has a parachute. Also, Cirrus is just a wicked fun plane to fly :)

I was a check pilot/ Instructor after I retired from commercial flying. I am sure your instructor is absolutely competent but you need a better instructor chum. Someone that is far more proactive rather than reactive. Skud running should be avoided especially during abinitio training

My only complaint is cloud separation. imo the instructor should've really kept you down a bit... Other than that awesome dude, I dream of the day to sit back in a Cirrus of my own and finish my PPL

Hey Trevor, with the pandemic and other life events, the mission I was training for (flying locally in the northeast for business) is no longer something I need to do. So while I hope to get back in the air soon, other priorities have taken over at present.

Your first lesson was a 280nm cross country round trip? That’s interesting..must be a reason because that is highly unusual. Also, just an FYI...you must keep a 500’ separation below the clouds when flying VFR. Not sure why your instructor had you skimming them like that?

Hi Tyler, the thought was to see if the plane and GA flying in general would support a common mission to fly between MA and NY so it was a combination of a lesson and a cross country with a purpose :) there was much in the video that was cut so my instructor was at the controls much of the time. That said your observation is a good one and I’ve since learned about the 500’ separation rule.

Don't understand the apprehension and nervousness. First Lessons should be full of excitement and wonder, not fear and apprehension. You should feel safe in the thought that the CFI shouldn't allow you to get into too much trouble without correction. Well, except for the part where he almost let you go into IMC.

That’s an expensive aircraft for primary trainer. A Cessna 172 does the same thing for half the price.

Fun to hear the CFI dumb down what crabbing is and why it happens. Dunno why you took a cross country flight in your early training...you should be learning maneuvers and learning to takeoff, fly the pattern and land for most of your training until you are able to solo. After learning the basics is when you start to fly longer cross-country legs. You are violating VFR cloud clearance rules for most of the flight...hope you later learned not to do that...

You can’t get IFR 1 hour after PPL, you mean 60 , then 121 hrs.......

Also, if your instructor had maintained proper cloud clearance requirements you wouldn't have kept creeping up into them. That is dangerous.

Are you from England? We don't have a "PPL" in the US. It is a Private Pilot Certificate.

Nice video! I would like to ask you: don`t you know why there is no option of Yaw Damper in SR20? Because in SR22 this option is available.

I don’t know for sure but I think it has to do with the overall power output of the SR20 vs 22. Might be more necessary for yaw damper with the more powerful engine? I will ask around and report back...or any others have the answer who are reading this?

In my opinion I think this is too much plane for a novice, kinda like the cart before the horse. learn the old school methods find a tail wheel aircraft learn the fundamentals.

In my opinion, Cirrus is great plane but not for PPL training. With spring controls it is not easy to feel the aerodynamic effects on the controls.

I am looking to transition to an SR22. Have flown Cessna 172, 182, 177, as well as Piper Cherokee 6, and T-tail Lance. The Cirrus looks to be a great airplane to alleviate all the safety issues my wife always worries about! Your video is great, BUT.... your instructor broke VFR minimums nearly your entire flight. The absolute minimum clearance below the clouds is 500FT. With all the IFR traffic in and around the Northeast Corridor, that seemed highly dangerous and incompetent. Maybe it was just the perspective that showed in the video?
