First Flight Failure: My Giant RC T-28's Tragic Maiden Flight

Well, this was supposed to go differently. The T-28’s first flight was looking great until the radio failed shortly after takeoff. I’m still processing this one, especially in light of the loss of the B-58 too, but it is an unfortunately reality that’s part of the hobby! Sometimes as good as things look, unforeseen failures happen, and we learn and we continue. Watch the full flight and the aftermath-then stick around, because I’ve already got ideas for the next project. What should we build next??

So sorry for your loss Chris! It’s hard to take, 2 in a row. I know you are a Spektrum guy but I suggest trying a dual band system for your bigger builds.

Chris, that was heartbreaking! So much time, effort and sweat equity went into the building of the T-28 all gone in a few seconds. All of us in this great RC hobby can empathize/sympathize with your emotion and feelings. However, in all defeats, we man up and look for our next RC victory! I look forward to your next build.

Sorry for your loss Chris. Beautiful plane. I noticed that your wiring is straight and not twisted pair interconnections. You must use twisted pair wiring especially in giant scale ignition, turbine, electric powered systems, etc. and also keep the power and ignition wires separated as far as possible from each other as to not get electrical interference injected into the servo/receiver wiring which will definitely cause signal loss. Same with the receivers. Keep those as far as possible from ignition. If the wires must cross, they must be 90 degrees to each other to minimize cross-talk (interference). Looking forward to seeing another fly again.

I switched from Spektrum to a FrSky X20S about 6 months ago. Best radio system on the market. I’m also flying turbines. Flawless performance.

My buddy flies FR Sky, and loses shit all the time (he's an experienced pilot). It happens with all brands, receivers, etc. There are many variables. Very much like computers! :)

Yes. My TANDEM X20 PRO AW arrives today. also ordered the multi-module. Definitely switching all my larger planes to the FrSky dual-band receivers. Spektrum's receiver prices have gone insane and is another reason I'm converting.

Really sorry for your loss 😢it really amazes me how many people use these high dollar radio systems and loose high dollar aircraft and I see the ole timers using old school Futaba’s like myself and rarely have issues I think these newer radios are to complicated and cause more problems than they cure JMO .

And that is why I switched to a FrSky X20RS after I got hits on my IX20. My buddy lost two planes in one day on his IX20S. Suffice to say he switched too! Sorry for your loss Chris.

Only thing I don't see was a proper range check, on the range checks, was engine running, 30 paces away and doing the full 360 degree check. I have never had a failure, electric, gas or turbine with this method, which they do explain in the manual. Sorry to see man, I love my 3cyl radio on my P47, flown with the same radio.

I'm sorry my friend, it's happened to all of us at some point. I would like to recommend that you use transmitters and receivers with the ELRS protocol. I have been flying with this system for over a year and I have never lost the signal again, it really is really good. It can't be that a radio like spektrum still has this type of reception problems,😞

Send that transmitter to horizon to test the transmitter module, we’ve had two guys at the field with IX20’s that had issues loosing a few birds, they sent the transmitters in and found out module was emitting a weak signal and Horizon replaced them, just fruit for thought! Sucks that this happened I’ve been on a pretty sucky spell too lately.

you got a hold as soon as you put the gear up. should have put th gear back down. gear up may have been blocking signal.

so sorry Chris, thats why I got ride of spectrum radio system years ago, lost to many planes, get a FrSky Tandem X20 Transmitter with 900M/2.4G Dual-Band Internal RF Module…

Couldn't agree more. I see a lot saying frsky, I had a x20s and programing is a nightmare compared to jeti. The telemetry you get with jeti is unmatched.

Honestly surprised you tried to fly it after having those issues on the ground. Also you should be ditching Spektrum as a transmitter / receiver. There's some great videos out there showing how bad their range is. So sad to see this after the Hustler as well. I feel for you Chris!

Do another T-28 Chris! I'm so sorry this happened. Use a completely different receiver though! I maidened mine recently (the China Lake version) and it flew well, but I did run it off into tall grass on landing and flipped it, bending the nose gear strut. But it does have a great presence and deserves another shot from you!

As much as it hurts to watch this it actually does me some good to see other pilots going through tough loses. It reassures me that I'm not alone. Thank you for sharing this. It makes me more prepared for the next time one of my planes goes in.

Dude I know no one wants to hear it, but dump Spektrum for these expensive builds. You need something that offers 900 mghz backup. Trust me, it will save you from these situations. The airways are getting dirtier and dirtier. 2.4g is just not enough anymore. That being said, Im sorry for your loss. We all are super excited to see what you come up with next!

Sorry for your loss. So sad. I’ve been following this build since the beginning. Time to move on from Spektrum. Get a Frsky X20 RS, you won’t regret it. It took me just one crash with a Spektrum to move on. Sorry buddy.

Sorry for the loss. I have my satellite receiver next to the battery ill move it somewhere else since that seemed to caused issues on the t28.. Since you asked . Maybe a p38 or f104.

Soooo sorry Chris, this is a total bummer!!! Hope you’ll find the energy to build another T-28, it’s a super cool plane! I am flying with a group of friends, lots of jets. Not to start a “which is best radio” discussion here, but we all moved away from Spectrum, so many different failures…… We all invested in Jeti and we have never been sorry about that. Did you have an onboard counter for the individual frames etc. !?

I'm so sorry for yet another of your beautiful planes to be lost Chris. I switched to TBS crossfire for this very reason. Unless it's a lil foamy, I put TBS Crossfire RX in my planes and use my Radio Master TX16 with a CrossFire module. But on a positive note, your book is fantastic and I have implemented a bit of your techniques in my MiG build.

I’ve been flying Spektrum from its beginning and have had zero issues until the past few months. I can’t prove it, but it certainly seems like there is an issue with the most recent 2 firmware updates in the iX series. My iX14 went from rock solid to having random holds and eventually the loss of 2 models in situations that looked identical to yours. I have since switched to a RadioMaster Tx16s (because it was compatible with the ~40 Spektrum receivers I already own). All of my issues went away after I changed transmitters. I am not a Spektrum hater, I’ve been using their stuff for nearly 20 years but I’m convinced that there is something amiss with the current iX firmware.

That was heartbreaking to watch, especially after the loss of the B-58. My advice would be to start a completely different project, and to give some time before coming back to the T-28.

Spektrum does still have transmission issues, especially if any receiver or sat is near a battery... Get yourself a Jeti Radio... 😊

I have a gen 1 dx8, and luckily, I haven't had any issues. I've heard nothing but problems with the newer spektrum stuff. Sorry for the loss brother. Don't let this one keep ya down.

Did you do a range check with engine running from every direction at the flying field? With a plane that costly I would check and re-check connection. Sometimes checking range at home motor off means nothing. sorry for the loss.

Chris sorry for your loss my friend. That’s another tough one to swallow 😢. You’ll get through this rough patch and come out on the other side better than ever. You’re one heck of a modeler so I say try the T-28 again because it’s such a great flying airplane and I’m sure you would really enjoy flying it. That’s a really nice plane and I know you’ll figure out what was going on and recover from it and fly on !! Dave Kristy maidened his and all went well until the landing. Landed fine on our fabric runway but was too close to one side and ran into the grass and the nose wheel caught on something and the plane abruptly stopped and flipped over. No major damage other than busted the canopy. So hang in there and it will get better! Good luck 🍀

This was a big loss and I was sorry for that! Definitely I want to see this bird in the sky and land successfully. There could be a sign for this accident. First you forgot the gas at home, then you got no signal in low rate…. Thank you for sharing the video!

Chris you may want to compare notes with our common friend at Cane Ridge. He crashed 2 or 3 times using Spektrum. Then he switched to a different company and found success with his turbine jet.

Did you check reception with gear retracted? I know you probably did but i might have missed it. It looked like you started having problems as soon as the gear went up.

That's a real stinker :( Sorry to see that happen. I have experienced this too on a maiden flight and it is a sickening feeling for sure. But, we pick up the pieces and move on. It is part of the hobby.. build, fly, crash... repeat ;)

OK got a really, potentially, stupid question but as an outsider is it possible to include an emergency chute in these RC planes. Somewhat like the BRS systems on ultralights.
