I came here from watching the African videos. What a contrast. I was thinking as I was watching, "I'd be up in this thing all the time. I'd log 1000 hours in one year. Man, that looks fun".
That was a good smooth run and the machine looks like it handles well. It took off in a stone throw and looked like you were having trouble trying to get it to stall. No wing drop and it is even my favourite colour. I want one. Merry Christmas guys.
this is exactly the sort of plane ive been looking for, a super minimalistic cheap cub shaped ultralight, a two seater version with floats or big tyres would be perfect
In my flight training, we performed stalls at around 3000ft AGL so it a stall was performed incorrectly and it turned into a spin, we could recover before hitting the ground. Also stall were not conducted over or an airport traffic pattern.
That's what steel tube airplanes look like without covering. Check out this Piper Cub frame: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vWVClzbhjb4.html A Cub looks a lot more substantial with the covering on, doesnt' it? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-439Ec-bAWG0.html Keep in mind that the Cub probably weighs 3 or more times as much as the plane in this video, plus if flies faster, so it needs to be considerably stronger. Any responsibly designed aircraft will be able to take 4 or more g's. If this is a Legal Eagle, I haven't heard too many stories about structural failures with them yet.
This guy is unreal.. That thing fly well , short take off, smooth flying a compulsory test and safety landing and all went perfect. ( have you seen the altitude!!! insane.)
There's a lot of deflection when inputs are made to the empennage control surfaces. I know it's a minimal airframe. But it just seems there's a lot of deflection if you keep your eye on the relationship between the empennage and the wing struts. Flexible is good though.. better bending than breaking.
Nice aircraft... Check the video looks like you are holding down elevator indicating a tail heavy weight distribution not sure you can do much about that though possibly adjust the horizontal stabs angle of attack a smidgen.... Or the angle of the wing a tiny bit.... Possibly thrust angle couple shims on top mirror mounts..... Does it nose down hands off the stick.... You really should tighten those shoulder straps and maybe use a cross the chest strap to keep them on the shoulders.... If shit goes wrong you will appreciate being tied in better
I really enjoyed watching this entire video!!! You flew the plane so well!!! the harness needs some little improvement but the plane appeared to do what you wanted it to do. Again, thanks for the good time that I had!!!
The 3 main tubing pieces for the fuselage look a bit thin. If one kinks or bends that's the end of you, cos the whole tail boom would simply collapse. And it seems you can see some flexing of the tail boom. The same thickness for the 3 main boom tubings as the wing strut tubing would be great, then I might get in it.
Smooth, relaxed test. So docile you could probably go shopping with it. Seat belt could be tighter though. Marvelous accolade to Mr Eagle , creator. Thanks. Dave
Love the ASI. I've flown in a Thruster with similar deal a bit smaller, that thing was up and down like a yo-yo. Yours looks quite accurate. Nice vid.Thank you sir.
For all the "flimsy" comments, these legal eagles are actually one of the strongest ultralights you can build. Very well designed, the truss system the designer used is genius and very light weight.
For all his competence, this gentleman has an air of bewilderment about him. The stalls are a non-event, as advertised, merely adding to the dullness of this film. I don't know what to think, really.
If the airframe breaks the helmet wouldn't do you any good. Actually in any crash it isn't going to help in something that lightly made. But the stall speed is so low if he loses the engine it may help when he goes through the trees.
Yep, and if the engine is still running it might chop his head off. Most likely any accident is going to be engine failure and if he has to put it in the trees a helmet would certainly help but even at 35mph (stall speed?) it's going to be a hard landing in the trees. I'd stay close to roads if I flew an ultralight and with enough altitude even on final to landing the landing is so short he can touchdown half way down any runway.
Oh I see I didn't realize that a helmet isn't going to help, I must tell this to the kids who ride a push bike or even a motor bike, no need to wear a helmet !!!! That's the dumbest answer I've read on here, helmet won't help!!! WTF!
ground effect is within the wing span of the plane so yes you are in ground effect which improves the aircrafts L/D. It clips part of the wing tip vortices so the drag goes down, like Jason says do it higher than the span of your plane, and like lots of other folks say, wear a helmet.
Safety harness needs redesign reminds me of wearing bib overalls and the straps always falling, I don't think they'd be any help in a crash, maybe you would have time to pull them tight but that's a gamble and they'd not likely provide any help if there were side loads they'd just twist off your shoulder and your upper torso would hit whatever. Neat engine sounded solid, I'd trust it.
I like the aircraft. I don't like people who fly without a radio.....no matter what! If you can afford the aircraft you can afford a radio. My friend was killed along with his student pilot (and the UL pilot) when a fool in an ultralight with no communication radio decided he would depart while Rod and his student were on final. At 300 feet AGL the ultralight hit them from below.
I am not a pilot, I have never flown in an ultralight, and I don't know anyone who has, but the loose shoulder harnesses look like a major safety problem. One of the first things that caught my attention in the video was the time spent by the pilot in fastening and adjusting the straps, and after all of that, they appeared loose. I agree with others that a helmet might also be a useful accessory. Just my 2 cents.
Them M.I.C carbs I have noticed since 2000 some have a filter on the Seat of the fuel inlet held on with a E clip they are 3/16 in size inside the body ( Have to remove it ) and they fill up with micro particles in the fuel either slowing or stalling the engine just curious if you`ve run across this . My Quad done this to me left me in the bush for hrs , Took it back to the dealer they`re Mech . could`nt find ? ?? was wrong -I went back out again Only to have it happen again , I took it apart finding it I threw it away it ran much better easier starting too . Is that a Goldwing motor ?
You should do another vid doing a walk-around to show the detail. Did you do the VW engine conversion? That twin-carb, dual-port engine should provide tons of power.
hey Les, I've been looking at ultralights for a while and I've basically settled on the eagle. I know you're in the central valley, and wanted to see if you'd be down to let me take a look at your eagle so I can get a sense of what I'll need to build one. I'm right over in the bay, so that shouldn't be too bad of a visit. thanks.
Beautiful plane. One thing: the shoulder harness attach should be above the level of the shoulders. If the plane hits something head on in a crash with the attach below the shoulders, when the torso is thrown forward and the belts go tight, it compresses the spine violently. Better to attach the harness to the tubing cluster above and behind the head.
What material is this made out of? What is the skeleton made out of and also the actual wings. Another question, is there any controllable flaps on the top wings or is control over this plane all done through the back part? Also is it just a wire connection giving him control of the rudder, and so all he has to do is pull the joystick a direction and the cable will follow? Thanks everyone!
Hello sir! I noticed you are flying a whole vw engine on this eagle. I would like to know how the aircraft performs. Cutting a good vw case kinda hurts my feelings, plus the whole would seem to run smoother.. Thanks! Great work👍
@@commentatron "A hank of hair and a piece of bone?" commentatron2000 I think a person resorts to name calling when they have an emotional argument to make with little or no supporting logical argument. I know I'm safer on the ground because I can't fall from a thousand feet. And commentatron2000 if you don't like my sarcasm, well I don't like your stupid. So now go ahead and shock me, say something intelligent.
@@kennethgray2003 Didn't mean to strike a nerve. I meant we're all relatively fragile, whether on the ground or in the air. The old expression I used is supposed to convey how insubstantial we are. On the other hand, I was amused to read in your RU-vid 'About' that your friends call you, 'Bones.' Now go get your shine box.
Only complaint l have is camera angle wich puts horizon at a constant climb and makes it seem to be dragging it's tail. Loose safety harness and no helmet is his own problem. Would have liked some technical info though.
Only Complaint I Have Is That You Need Some Grammer, I'm Belgian, I'm 10 and Have Better Grammer Than You, The Camera Angle Is Awesome, _tEcHNiCaL iNfO_, *tHeRe yOu gO m8!*
Since the frame is made from tubes, you could send the exhaust and noise out the back with a bigger tube as part of the frame and connect it with a flexible exhaust pipe for a more enjoyable quiet ride instead of blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. Quiet would make the ride more fun and less headache from noise.
5 to 6 pounds more and have a 2 into 1 exhaust w/ sportbike muffler, smooth and improve engine performance , and noise reduction. Is the plane at weight limit now?
Minimum rpm for level flight CANNOT be tested just above runway since the aircraft benefits from extra lift in ground effect, which will be non existent in cruise.
it's supposed to. Soft motor mounts, otherwise simple revving of the engine would over stress the airframe. VW 1600cc dual port. Quite an engine for a UL
You could see the left shoulder strap was already slipping down off his shoulder - totally useless in a crash. My F.I years ago, in Tiger Moths, always finished the pre-take check list with Hatches and HARNESSES TIGHT.... Still Valid today !
Brave. Maybe if I actually had a license to fly a plane I would see it differently but from here at my desk I dont have the balls to get into that contraption . Looks like a homemade go-kart or minibike to me.
great little plane i like it alot! you seem to be a seasoned pilot so a funny part i noticed when you reached out and checked the stabilizer bars for the wings you try to shake them a bit. thats funny cause what did you really plan to do if it came off in your hand lol? i'd be nervous to put more load on it in flight maybe check before you go. and use thread lock on everything! be safe. wonderful flight! :)
