July 5, 2014 -- From French Valley Airport (F70) in Murietta, CA to John Wayne Airport (SNA) in Orange County, California --
Here's a video of my first flight with my son, Christopher, who's home for the summer after his first year of college. The plane is an Evektor SportStar.
On our first leg (not included), we made a direct flight to French Valley, a little non-towered airport in Murietta, CA, not too far from Lake Elsinore.
On the way back, we headed to the ocean and then flew along the coast and over our home town of Laguna Beach before turning toward John Wayne. On the 45 entry into John Wayne, we passed over my son's old high school.
We picked up flight following in the air after departing from French Valley. That's optional, but seems like a good thing to have in the crowded airspace over Southern California.
Christopher has taken flight lessons, but school has rightfully taken some precedence, so he won't finish up for a while.
For what it's worth, enjoy.
MUSIC INFO:
In hopes that the copyright gods will be OK with it, here's some info re the song I used:
Title: "Major Tom"
Artist: Shiny Toy Guns.
It's a terrific flying song if you don't listen too closely to the words.

I got all of my 10 or so hours flying out of F70 before I got laid off and had to take a hiatus. I hope to get back to flying some day though. Thanks for the videos, keep em coming.

I hope you can get back to it soon. French Valley would be a nice place to take flying lessons.

the reason I want to fly into F70 is that my cfi lives in Temecula. I will be flying from KREI to meet him to take lessons. If I am able to fly to F70, I can meet him at there. My plane is in KREI. I am fully solo endorsed, only for local air ports. EventuallyI will cross country to F70 solo

Congrats on your solo! I imagine he'll get you endorsed for the trips to F70. My friend is training at Riverside (KRAL) and I know he has made at least a dual flight to French Valley. I remember Redlands (KREI) so well because it was one of two airports I landed at on my first dual flight away from the training patch. It's a bit tough to find as you're flying east over the 10, aligned witht the runway.

Very nice video. My flying is restricted to the sim in pilotedge, so it's nice to know what the scenery really looks like:)

A great little airport. You're lucky to have that in your backyard.

Nice video and I like the fact that you always run the checklist out loud. As far as the song, I'm not a fan of music on top of cockpit audio, but otherwise great job!

no body shold have music in their cock pit. I don't even have music in my car, much less the cabin

I don't think he had the music over the radio, o think he adds it on during editing. I live the music in the background, especially if you have a mute during ATC call option on your headset.

Music in background was annoying, but otherwise a good video. Checklist out loud is GREAT, as the majority of your audience are pilots, or new pilots, so we'll done! Also, great comm work as well, and it helps student pilots to become familiar with how it all works, and how important it is to repeat instructions back for clarity. Will look forward to further videos.

Another good video, I liked the music actually.. and wow that ATC was having a rough day.. heh

I think it got a little confusing because I was just about to leave the first guys sector when I called. Next time I depart French Valley, I think I'll call Approach sooner so that I'm not in that transition zone between their sectors.

do you know how to land in santa monica or LAX? I am a student pilot and I want to learn to land in busy air ports. My instructor told me that it is part of flying. He recommends that I don't try for instrument rating until I have had complete comfort in every aspect of flying with busy ATC. Do you know how to land in LAX? thx. I soloed this past wkend.
@jandras1
@jandras1 7 лет назад
Hi - Unless and until you have an actual need to land at LAX, I would put that off to the future because, to my understanding, you would annoy them and it's expensive. Santa Monica (KSMO) is right next to LAX, on the other hand, and is a great place to go.

I went to KRAL today. The lady said report 2 mile right base. I took it to mean fly right base. And if I were flying right base, I naturally follow it with final. And it wasn't until I just about touched down that the lady was nice enough to say cleared to land. And even then, I didn't know what the hell happened. I thought she was just saying it. I so didn't get it. Later, I find out from my instructor whom I was meeting at KRAL, that I was supposed to REPORT right base 2 mile. I was soooooo offffffff. I am going to die one of these days because I can't seem to be mistake free.
@jandras1
@jandras1 7 лет назад
Yup. She simply wanted you to "report" or check in as you got closer so you'd alert her to your presence at a point she could best work with you. Call might have been something like, "Riverside Tower, Bugmasher 123 is 2 miles right base." You must always have heard "clear to land" before you land at a towered ariport, so keep that in mind. If you're on final or short final, and you're not ABSOLUTELY sure you were already cleared, you can invite the clearance (or confirmation if already given) by saying something like, "XYZ Tower, bugmaster 123, confirm clear to land." It's all about learning and not repeating mistakes. Keep having fun!

Hello, Joe, how long time to ride from John Wayne airport to Laguna Beach to home on car? Is it about 1 hour?
@jandras1
@jandras1 5 лет назад
Hi, it's about a half hour with normal traffic. Which, in a funny way, isn't a whole lot longer than flying in this slow plane!

Nick Ford Thanks Nick. Yes indeed on the parking. There are some transient parking Ts right next to the restaurant. Nice friendly place with a view of the runway. We're doing a short flight to SMO tomorrow evening since he heads back to NY for school again on Monday.

Thanks for the feedback. It's pretty funny though. If folks complain about something, it's almost always about using any music at all, so this is a first. Happy flying.

Ha. OK. Lowers head in shame. I like the music and try to use it only some of the time and keep the levels low relative to the cockpit audio, but I'll definitely think about it. Hopefully I'll do some instrument training videos soon.
