If I'm not mistaken, Roger actually worked on the first house in 1979, though he doesn't appear on screen. I love how un-slick these early shows were. The last 20years have increasingly become over-produced, but back in the 80's you really got the sense you were on a construction site. I miss the days I would come in from a cold afternoon of working in the yard to watch This Old House. And I definitely miss Roger Cook.

Same here. Roger always inspired us about getting a proper landscape design and got me to get outside, take care of our property by cutting, edging, and fertilizing the grass, raking the leaves, planting and pruning the plants so they grew the right way, etc. And to this day, 40-some years later, I still do, although like you, I miss looking forward to the next episode of TOH as a reward for my efforts!

Yeah everybody's working on these mega mansions and the Tru concept of TOH is lost. We follow the series from 1979 and now it's all glitz. And. Show biz. Meh

SO AGREE. Villa was a humorless stiff. Steve's natural warmth brought everyone's personality out, in my book he doesn't get enough credit for the show's success.

@@hd-xc2lz Roku has a subscription that has all of the TOH seasons ( at least most ). It’s worth it for the nostalgia. Bob made it all about him, and Steve made it all about learning different techniques. I remember him just flabbergasted when he learned what a pilaster was during the post and beam house. That was the first season that I got fully invested in TOH. My Saturday mornings consisted of New Yankee Workshop, then TOH, and finally Hometime. I can’t imagine what the show will be once Tommy, Richard, Norm, and Kevin retire.

That's what the rest of the TOH guys said about Bob after he left the show. They said he took up too much screentime. The subsequent hosts did less talking (other than to the camera/viewer) and more asking questions and listening to the experts' responses. When they were looking for a new host to replace Steve when he decided to retire after the first season of Ask This Old House had wrapped filming, they decided on Kevin because they felt he represented most of the fans of the show; ordinary folks who were interested in tackling home improvement projects but weren't sure how to get started. Kevin asks the questions that most of the people watching the show probably would have.

Roger was wearing his company hoodie - K&R Landscape - started by his he and his late wife who passed away in 2010. She was an insurance broker who invested well and made bank - hence Rogers current fortune of approx 11M. So sad that he had to leave TOH for health reasons and the last recent picture I saw of him and Jenn Nawada, he was using a cane for support! Don't know what is going on with him nor is it any of my bizz but the cane could be because he likely slipped a disc. Surely hope he gets better.

Its no wonder he got asked back to the show sevral times, there he is with the landscape architect and Bob Vila not too long after that you didn't see them on the show anymore but Roger was telling you the direction the show took after Bob vela left it. Bob ran around and talked over the workers, but the real point of the show was to talk about what and how things were done. That wasn't Vilas style. Even when he went to do his own show he did this and kept that style of show. Its my oppion the shows current host is the best of all that have in the past ecpr maybe Norm becuse if I remember norm did a few shows as host. You've got to wonder did Roger get sick from using Round up all thoses years? And is that why his wife got sick? Chances are pretty good Roger would come home with it on his clothing and she picked it up off his clothing washing them. If Round up even caused illnesses as found in a court of law. Its a thought Roger wanted to keep his health private. Is this episode you could tell he wasnt afraid of the camera. And he wanted to teach his craft if Bob and the other guys would just shut up and let him talk.

THANKS for another trip back on the TOH Time Machine! I had never even heard of a "Landscape Architect" until they showed us Tom "Prince Valiant" Wirth. How I used to look forward to every new show just to LEARN. Back then my ONLY source of DIY information was TOH and the Time Life home improvement books. HAD to look Tom up after seeing this. "God Speed" Thomas E. Wirth, September 16, 1941 - July 21, 2018. Can you find us the last episode with Tom in it?

I'll bet today that house and all the roads pop bright every spring , thats one hell of a lot of color each spring. The roadreden grow slowly but the lilacs grow faster id like to think the yard is full of 10' wall of color if you don't belive me take a look at some of the gardens in England. Some of these plants get huge. The soil ph has to be just right if its not they die back. Also drainage needs to be perfect.

Seems they planted some of those trees (like the crabapple) too close to the house. We've learned ourselves the problems of roots in the foundation and tree branches holding in moisture and pine needles (leaves in their case) rotting out the roof. And keeping bushes right next to the building where they'll trap moisture and support mildew growth? I'm sure those walls are rotting out now.
