you should put a predator v-twin 670cc from harbor freight. 22hp and 31ft-tq for $6-700 pretty cheap for what it is and you'll have plenty of power!!

670 wouldnt fit without some big modifications. Might fit if you hack it up and remove the passenger seat.

looks like the belt got wet and then you smoked it lol, back in the day when we drove those things you had to take a good run at a hill keep the rpms up and get your momentum going good because that tiny engine has no torque. I would get a new belt and fab up some kind of shield for the belt. If you get the belt wet on a Gator sometimes they won't even move.

Crob if you weld the axle together that thing would be impossible to turn. It would just want to track forward, plus it only has one wheel to turn.

Josh Baseball yes old Briggs engines are great however the new ones are completely junk for example out of 5 newer briggs engines I own 4 have had to be rebuilt within 200 hours after using even though the correct Briggs engine break in procedures were followed however the 5 older Briggs engines still don't need anything more that a good servicing every couple of months (oil change spark plug gap checked, cooling fins cleaned, points cleaned and readjusted, etc.) Briggs quality has gone into and down the toilet

I have the same model gator and it has tons of power, used to haul lumber and firewood. I think he needs to tighten/replace his drive belts.

@3Dmachines probably oil burning because of the angle that u were on some new springs from Comet clutches will do you some good maybe even lighter weights in the primary and a Mikuni carburetor an get a header pipe lose the muffler or get you hands on a 250-450cc muffler an make semi long an as straight as possible

I think you shouldn't modify the gator put an engine in it like from the big red 3-wheeler or something and make it a lot faster I think that would be awesome tons of wow factor but I know that takes quite a bit of money but it would still be cool

at my local fire house we have the 6 wheeled version of yours as a brush vehicle. it used to dog on the hills and move super slow. long story short our service guy found that it has a engine governor on it from the factory. he removed it and the thing moves now with plenty of power behind it.

Joseph's Vlogs you should watch others that actually take the time to explain everything . Dalton is entertaining but doesn't teach anyone much of anything or explain much. I am a small engine mechanic so it's easier for us to understand the things he doesn't explain.

Could be something with your torque converter, or the fact that thing is being hauled around by a little 290cc 10HP Kawasaki engine. Check your compression on the engine too though. Might explain some of the smoke.

Pull the motor. Do some research. Re jet carb and remove governor. It's basically a go kart engine. Upgrade intake and exhaust. Let the baby rip! Even upgraded valve springs and New cam will make that engine a beast!

Is it CVT transmission? You could put lighter rollers and stiffer torque spring in it, would be much better for hills!

Your power issue might be the fact it's only about 10hp. Put a bigger Honda engine in it, like a 16hp

the smoke might be from the cvt (torque converter) belt slipping or the piston rings could be shot and they have a lot of blow-by and the compression is bad.

I have a 1997 John Deere 6X4 so it has 2 front tires instead of 1. This happens sometimes with mine to. You just have to run it slow on flat land for a little bit

Be ambitious, make it a 6x6 and add an axal with two wheels in the front and maybe then making it 6 wheel drive? Engine upgrade too maybe? Thats a sweet john deere

According to the “john deere gator forum” the Honda GX390 engine is a good engine for your AMT 626, the original Kawasaki engine is apt to smoke. The Honda engine is also more powerful. Personally I think a YZ 450 engine would do better.

the weak point of the gators in general is the vario belt and on the bigger gators like the 5 wheeled one you just gotta have the ones with the 3 cilinder diesel cause DIESEL AND 3 CILINDER= THE BEST EVER

One thing I've found about john deers are they are amazing in mud for some reason my uncle has a john deer side by side and it goes though mud that lifted trucks get stuck in easy

When it was new it had 18hp and a top speed of around 15 mph so if your looking for speed you may want to think about some upgrades.

Also every year my buddy and I and friends go to a cabin to relax and ride our bikes/quads. It's in Mansfield Pennsylvania not far from New York border. It would be awesome for you to to come out, even bring jake the toilet snake!! Clutch is toast. New springs, buttons, weights, rollers and a belt should have it running like a champ. Plus a CVT rebuild and explanation would provide great content.

your centrifugal clutches are not doing there job (frozen). Take them apart and clean them because your stuck in a higher "gear" pulley set up. This is also why your smoking your belt.

You can check and see if that motor is governed. Maybe a better carb, such as a mikuni? Or, just ditch the tired old gator motor, in favor of a 420 predator cheaper than the 670 everyone wants, ungoverned of course!
