I'm first-generation British but still feel I can relate just as much to *"The American Dream".* My parents spent months on a small fishing boat lost at sea, endured so many hardships, sacrificed so much to get here just for me to have the better life they gave me today. I can't thank them enough and will always love them for what they've done for me. Thank you mum and dad...

My parents came here as immigrants from Italia (Italy). America always says that it's a land of opportunity for immigrants and for anyone to come here and have a chance no matter where they're from, so it's shameful how some Americans always say bigoted, bad things about refugees or immigrants from Syria, Mexico etc.

as a first gen Asian American my parents understand that even if I don't do well in high school, I can always go to a community college, and if I try my best, I can still transfer to a better college, and IF I WANT, I have a chance to get into a medical school, if I don't get into one, I could always go to nursing school and try try again until I get to my goal. to my parents, America means chances and opportunity for the children. if I was a crappy student in China, my life would have been over and I'm just so glad my parents gave me this opportunity. I want to give the best to my parents as soon I possible can.

It's kinda funny, because I'm considering moving to a different country when I'm older. I am nervous for the future of the United States. ilovesparky13 I'm 20 and I am about to graduate from college. I am not financially independent yet, which is the biggest thing holding me back. The next biggest thing is that if I were to move to a new country, I would not have a decent paying job nor any connections. The country I would most likely move to is Finland (i've even started learning Finnish). I do have an online friend that lives in Finland. If I'm going to move somewhere, I definitely need to have a plan. the weapons post It's kind of complicated to explain, just because in terms of politics, both sides frustrate me. However, the right wing has been more frustrating just because a lot of idiotic things tend to come more so from the right in my opinion.

Being a first-generation British the biggest challenge for me was the fear of being socially excluded. Fear of failure, lack of experience followed next. I did struggle with cultural shock in the beginning but eventually none of these things mattered because I came out stronger, smarter, happier (I guess) The only atrocity is massive burden of student loans
@CloudiaTsang

I am a first generation American. My dad emigrated from Hong Kong in 1980's to go to college here in the U.S. He was the oldest of 3 kids, and his father died when he was a teenager. New York was the first place he worked as a dishwasher in Chinatown. Indiana is where he went to school and learned the American customs, and Chicago Illinois was where he met my mom and finished his degree while also paying for his 2 sisters' educations while struggling to pay his own bills. Growing up, I've always had a roof over my head, clothes on my back, food to eat, and a private education. So the American dream for me is being able to give my parents whatever they need and want and to somehow repay them for all that they've sacrificed for me. The American dream is opportunity, it's living freely, and it's pursuing your dreams, big or small.

+Bethan Chalmers I've always thought Catholic schools were the best (in my experience), although it really depends on the school.
@bethanchalmers912
@bethanchalmers912 8 лет назад
Not only that but it depends on what kind of person you are and how they help you achieve, say if you're badly behaved maybe a private/Catholic school but sometimes state school can be better, I think personally, if you have learning difficulties or have a disability state schools or schools mainly aimed at these area are the best as they are required by the government to look after you
@bethanchalmers912
@bethanchalmers912 8 лет назад
My parents are hard on me too, I have to get all A's in my exams or they will officially disown me. I go to a state school and both my sisters have successfully got into the top two universities, and many from my school do. Private school isn't for everyone and nether is state school, that's merely the point I'm making, just because something is more expensive doesn't mean it's always better.
@saranje100
@saranje100 5 лет назад
Bethan Chalmers I agree, depends on the school (private or public). But I think what she said is something to do with the way her parents grew up and probably ideas they've constantly told their kids. Most likely her mom, being Filipino, wanted to send them to private school because in the Philippines, most private schools have better conditions and also, a better status/image (especially if the Filipino parent was poor growing up) ...it's more of a cultural mindset tbh.

My parents both grew up in Communist China and immigrated to the US in order to get a better life for their children. They knew that if they had us in China we would suffer so they came here. They still work hard for all of my siblings and me; my dad is extremely harsh when it comes to what he wants from us and our future but at the same time I know it's because he worries about us. We grew up with my parents working from morning till night and getting taken care of by our grandparents. My siblings and I are working hard ourselves to make sure we won't need help from my parents anymore as well as help them retire so they can finally relax. The American Dream to me is to be given the chance and opportunity to make your own life and give your kids the same chance if not a better chance to do the same.

My mom was born in Vietnam while my grandmother was feeling from communist China to Taiwan in the 50s. She came to the US on her own, and I was born in America. I used to hate being American and ungratefully complained about how horrible the US was, but I'm now extremely appreciative of the opportunities afforded me from this great nation! To me the American dream is having the freedom to carve your individual destiny with numerous tools at your disposal amidst a diverse group of people.

Depends on the state and/or city, many states and/or cities have too much standardized testing which gets in the way of learning. Privet schools do not have to partake in the testing of students, because they do not receive funding from the government, which leaves more time for teaching students.

There really is no difference. My mom (first generation) was sent to private school to learn the Catholic faith. I also go to Catholic school. I feel lucky though because my school us k-8 ( I am in eighth grade), and it's really to have grown up with the same friends. The downside is that you do not get any experience making new friends because you already have them.

Sorry for raising something which is irrelevant here. The lady who said her mom was from Pakistan, she in earlier buzzfeed video said that her mom was from India. Before that video she mentioned that her mom was from Bangladesh. The way she is moving from east to west I am thinking in her next video she gonna claim her mom was actually from Afghanistan. To give her credit before India got independence from Britisher India, Pakistan and Bangladesh were one country but not any more. May be she is telling the truth this time considering in today's world when we are seeing rise in Islamic terrorism even Pakistani people identify themselves as Indian due to Pakistan's active involvement in terrorism.
@keysersoze7605
@keysersoze7605 8 лет назад
+Rakesh M The Muslims in India pre-partition came as Moguls hundreds of years earlier. They identify as Indian and have lived in the Indian sub continent for centuries. Partition was when British colonized India was split between Hindus and Muslims. The Hindus got what is today India, and the Muslims got East and West Pakistan (Bangladesh and Pakistan respectively today). There are Muslims still in India just as there are Hindus in Pakistan. For generations prior to partition, there was interbreeding and religious conversion on both sides. Partition itself was an ungraceful splitting of the country based on religion, not ethnicity, but again, the Moguls and the Dravidians had mixed for centuries, so an ethnic split would have been nearly impossible. Pakistanis identify as being from the Indian subcontinent (hence, Indian) and have a shared culture with the rest of the subcontinent. Obviously there are different ritual customs between Muslims and Hindus, but the differences in secular customs aren’t huge. When referring to Europe for instance, we call both the French and the German European even though they have cultural differences. They would both identify as such and are free to identify their nationalities at their own discretion. TLDR, many Pakistanis consider themselves ethnically Indian, as they are from the Indian subcontinent. Therefore, you can consider yourself Indian and be from Pakistan, especially because Pakistan is a nationality, not an ethnic group, and the citizens in Pakistan had been relocated there FROM INDIA.

It really depends on your definition of the American Dream. For example: FDR thought it was the 4 freedoms, which in that case, it isn't dead. But if you look at it from a Great Gatsby point of view, where no matter how hard you try you will never truly be satisfied with what you have, then yeah, the dream is dead.

My wife and I are examples of the American Dream. Immigrants in 1963. No money. Mechanic making $3 / hr. Wife takes care of our child and me. Continuous education paid by employer gets me to Designer, Engineer, Technical Sales and General Manger. We are now comfortably retired at age 75. No divorce, debts. Savings in stocks and bonds Our son with same education and career managed to divorce twice, arrested for DUI and possession of Pot. Totaled 3 cars (DUI). Of course very little money.

For people born in this country, the American dream is a myth. Your typical monolingual American takes everything for granted, self absorbed and does not appreciate anything. Even a homeless person most times a junkie has a better life than someone in another country, trying to achieve it. I came to the US with nothing, did not know the language but I did something about it. Studied, served in the military, worked hard and the fruit of all my sacrifice: 1. Financially stability for life. 2. I have everything I need and items I wanted. 3. Education. 4. Home ownership. 5. Future generations will have the same opportunity as I did, in this country. Understanding the value of hard work and money isn't something most American don't truly understand and most take it for granted, expecting a hand out or a safety net. For anyone to say, the American dream is dead... I am living it and smiling EVERY day. You are the problem. This whole racism this and that... the man has never ever held me down. Soy Latino!

My story is similar but I am a first generation Australian. My parents left their whole family and friends behind in India to move to Australia. They had an opportunity to work in Aus and they took it. My parents started with no money and slowly worked and worked and saved and saved. My dad used to work night shifts, come home and wake up in the morning to get me and brother ready for school everyday. While my mum worked morning-afternoon shifts while we we're at school. My parents were rarely in the house at the same time and tried the best to provide for us. As a I child I never noticed the hard work they endured because I never went hungry, I never didn't have a place to sleep. I still got the toys, books, resources I wanted from them sacrificing their needs. Every year I had a birthday party where my mum cooked all by herself for many guests. My family slowly got on their feet and became stable. From living in a small rented house, to a four-bedroom single storey house now to large double storey. Now we live like any other family and we seem wealthy on the outside but we never take for granted the circumstances we came from.

My parents both immigrated from brazil. Right now I’m in high school almost graduating and heading off to college. I realize that my parents sacrificed their education and life and put everything on the line to come to the US, to a country where they didn’t know the language or culture. As the oldest of the 3 kids, I will be the first to graduate high school in my family and the first to attend college. It’s hard going through something that’s a major milestone in your life with help from your parents because they don’t know how to help you. But my parents are always by my side when I take these big steps for my future. I stay up late every night because I’m studying to better myself for me and my parents. Younger me would’ve never thought that I’d be taking AP courses my junior year of hs or that I’d be in the national honor society. I love them and I wouldn’t be who I am now without them. 😊❤️❤️❤️🇧🇷

My parents both moved to Pittsburgh from Italy for my dad's work. He spoke decent English but my mom didn't really speak any even by the time I was born (about 10 months later). She was alone most of the time taking care of me. She couldn't communicate well which was hard for her. She said she would drive us to New York to go to Ikea because every Ikea is pretty much the same all over the world so it felt familiar. I used to be embarrassed of their accents but now I'm just so proud of their courage. The American dream is giving up what's comfortable and easy for the life you ultimately want to live.

I remember this woman who came to speak to my school's women's leadership group. She and her family came here from Vietnam when she was very young. Her mom's wish for her children were so simple. She wanted one to have her own beauty salon and one to have her own store. They all exceeded her expectations greatly. But, it was just so amazing to me because it's something so little (to us) but such a big deal to them. America really is great land of opportunity and we take it for granted so much.

I wish people would take this more serious and realize that not all countries are great, but america comes close, as a first generation american, my parents have sacrificed a lot. They moved to America not knowing how to speak English but always put us before them. I always felt so different from other kids growing up. The other kids usually had and did things my family couldn't afford. My family lived in a third world country, where we mostly likely would've been poor, way more poor than now. We don't have the best but someday I know that my family and I will be happy not have to struggle to pay rent or bills.

The preamble states, "...ensure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity..." which to me, is the American dream. Working to earn a better life for yourself and working to secure the same for your future generations. America is called the "land of opportunity" because in this nation, the manner in which you die does not have to be the same in which you lived. It's a place where rags to riches stories are being written every single day.

Gary Vaynerchuk was an immigrant and look at him now. Being an immigrant or being a son/daughter of an immigrant should not be an disadvantage. There are cons, but they can transform into pros with a switch in attitude. It does matter where you come from, but what matters more is where you're going. You deserve it
