Leider ja. Mein Verein ist 1. FC Nürnberg. Unser größter Rivale ist Fürth. Die Stadt grenzt direkt an Nürnberg. Dieses Derby hat jetzt schon etwa 265? Mal stattgefunden. Die Tradition des Hasses der anderen Mannschaft ist also sehr stark. Nicht jeder randaliert, aber für zumindest 90 Minuten oder einen Tag, sind alle Fürther scheiße für mich 😂 In Europa hat so gut wie jedes professionelle Fußballteam ULTRAS. Ultras sind eine große Gruppe von Fans, die jedes Spiel kommen, gemeinsam Choreografien machen, singen, klatschen und einfach voll und ganz hinter dem Verein stehen. Ich liebe das. Leider gibt es unter den Ultras auch immer ein paar wenige, die einfach nur wegen der Rivalität da sind und z.B. mit den anderen Ultras vor oder nach dem Spiel kämpfen wollen. Das finde ich richtig dumm.

A tied game/Draw/Unentschieden ist für Underdogs gegen einen übermächtigen Gegner wie ein Sieg weil man gegen ihn nicht verloren hat. Und ein Sieg wäre eine Sensation. Umgekehrt für den Favoriten ist ein Unentschieden gegen den Underdog wie ein verlorenes Match. Aber es geht bei Fußball nicht nur ums Gewinnen sondern auch um die Spielweise, den Skills der einzelnen Spielern, die Taktik, gewonnen Zweikämpfe, gewonnene Dribblings und das Nützen von einem aufkommenden Momentum. Da ist viel Psychlogie im Spiel sowohl am Spielfeld bei den Spielern als auch auf den Rängen bei den Fans. Es ist ein 90 minütiges Up and Down der Gefühle im Minutentakt wenn man wirklich mit seinem Team mitfiebert. Daher ist das Chanten nicht nur um die Mannschaft anzufeuern sondern auch ein kanalisieren dieser Gefühlsachterbahn (= rollercoaster of feelings/emotion). Aber ein 3.Liga Spiel ist mit der Bundesliga nicht vergleichbar, die Qualität des Spiels ist einfach bei weitem nicht so gut..und ein volles Stadion wo beide Fangruppen lauthals chanten hat einfach eine einzigartige Atmosphäre. On the flipside is a draw like a lost game for the favorite. But it´s not only about winning. It´s also about the way the team is playing, the skills of the players (= how they handle the ball with their feet - is it looking graceful or "wooden"), winning tackelings, winning dribbelings, to recognize and use an upcoming momentum.(which you can clearly see on the stands but is it also seen by the players on the pitch...as you can see I didn´t mention "Goal" so far) There´s a lots of psychologie in the game both on the pitch amongst the players and on the stands amongst the fans. It´s an up and down of your feelings with each passing minute for both the players on the pitch and for the fans when they are truely engrossed with every single player of their team during the game. Therefore the chanting is not only to cheer for the team it is also to canalize that rollercoaster of feelings. But a 3rd league game is simply not comparable with the Bundesliga. The quality of the games is by far not as good as like in the Bundesliga ...and a full stadium where both fan sides are chanting loudly has simply an unique atmosphere. Cheerleading ist einfach keine europäische Tradition. Seit WWII wurde aber die US-Kultur populärer und seit einigen Jahren gibt es auch einige (ca. 550) Cheerleadingteams, die auf eigenen Turnieren auftreten oder bei Vereinsspielen z. B. beim American Football (ja auch das gibt es mittlerweile z. B. Frankfurt Galaxy) oder Basketball. Akrobatisches Tanzen (Gardetanz) ist traditionell eher im Karneval/Fastnacht beheimatet (Funkenmariechen), wobei dort eher keine Pyramiden wie im Cheerleading mit Flyer gebildet werden. Dafür gibt es aber viel "Tumbling" und Reihenformationen und eigentlich immer Begleitmusik. Außerdem werden beim Gardetanz spezielle Uniformen meist mit Hut und Feder getragen.

I'd say not one of the biggest, but the biggest by quite a margin. The only team that comes close in the third is 1860 Munich. I was hoping, that there would be a game between Kaiserslautern and Saarbrücken in the DFB Pokal this season, but sadly it wouldn't happen.

@@PassportTwo Weil es in der Liga nur um Punktesammeln geht. Vor einigen Jahren gab es für einen Sieg nur 2 Punkte. Damit der Unterschied zu einem Unentschieden größer wird und der Anreiz sich nicht mit einem Unentschieden zufrieden zu geben wächst, bekommt der Sieger seit einigen Jahren 3 Punkte. Im Pokalwettbewerb (in jeder Saison gibt es parallel zur Liga einen Pokalwettbewerb bei dem alle Teams der 1.- 3. Liga in einen Topf kommen und im KO System gegeneinander spielen) oder bei Turnieren (Europameisterschaft, Weltmeisterschaft) gibt es Verlängerung und fällt immer noch kein Tor, Elfmeterschießen.

Es ist auch nicht wie beim Eishockey, es gibt keine Playoff-Phase am Ende der Saison, Meister wird der Verein, der Ende am meisten gewonnen, am wenigsten verloren und Unentschieden gespielt hat. Es geht daher mehr um die Leistungen eines ganzen Jahres als um ein einziges Spiel. Dafür ist der DFB-Pokal da, da gibt es auch Verlängerungen und Elfmeterschießen wenn nach 90 oder 120 Minuten kein Sieger feststeht.

Verlängerungen und Elfmeterschießen gibt es nur bei K.-O.-Spielen, wenn nur eine der beiden weiter am Wettbewerb teilnehmen darf und die andere ausscheiden muss. Das K.-O.-System wird angewandt bei Pokalwettbewerben, Turnieren und Meisterschaften. Manchmal gilt es für den gesamten Wettbewerb, manchmal auch nur für die Finalrunden. In der Liga findet es nur selten Anwendung, beispielsweise bei Relegationsspielen (de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relegation_zur_deutschen_Fu%C3%9Fball-Bundesliga#Regelung_seit_2009).

In der Liga soll am Ende der gewinnen, der am besten gespielt hat. Wenn zwei Mannschaften gleich gut sind, wäre es ungerecht, zum Beispiel durch Elfmeterschießen, einen Gewinner zu bestimmen.

If you want to experience football pure, you need to go into the Ruhr Area. Dortmund or Schalke naturally being the king of the Revier. Learn the "Steigerlied" before your go to either. It's kind of funny, those two clubs are at each other throats constantly, except when either the Steigerlied is sung or the ticker shows that Bayern München is a goal behind. In those moments, they suddenly sing and cheer together.

There are always tickets sold from fan to fan on matchday. You naturally need some luck, but it is not completely impossible if you are ready to take a risk, are early and aren't too shy to just ask the people walking towards the stadium if they have a ticket or two left.

@@PassportTwo Think FIFA World Cup (or any other such tournament): you have the group stage, where ties are possible, and then you have the knockout stage, where the top two of each group get whittled down to one winner. In the knockout stage, each match *must* have a winner, and that's when you might see a penalty shoot-out.

I would just add to Paulo's answer and say that in a league format there is 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw (tie) and 0 for a loss so it provides incentive to win during the 90 mins playing time. When MLS launched in the USA at the time of the 1994 World Cup they tried to make it more appealing to American crowds by having shoot outs. This was the usual shots from the penalty spot but where a player would do an ice hockey style dribble / run with the ball towards the goal and try to beat the goalkeeper. MLS strugles with popularity in it's initial years partly because, as you said, football (sorry, I can't bring myself to say the 's' word) isn't traditionally an American sport like American Football or Basketball, but partly because real football fans in the USA didn't like these rules that seem bizarre to anyone that knows how it is played everywhere else. It was like watching a weird game show rather than a serious sporting event. The only times that come to mind where we have had similar rules in European or world football (I can't speak for other national or continental competitions around the world) have been things like the 'away goal rule'* often used in continental competitions such as the UEFA Champions League or the 'golden / silver goal rule'** used briefly in international competitions. *Away goal rule = When teams play both home and away legs in a cup competition and the aggregate score across both matches is a draw, then the team that scored the most goals away from home wins to go through to the next round. ** Golden goal rule = When in a knockout competition the match ends in a draw they will usually play 2 more periods of 15 minutes each (called exra time, similar to over time in the USA) to try to find a winner. For a while they tried having golden goal or silver goal extra time (so-called because they thought that the old name of sudden death sounded bad). Under the golden goal rule if a team scored in extra time playing stopped immediately and that team won. The silver goal was similar except instead of the match ending immediately they continued until the end of that half of extra time and if the score didn't change then the team that scored won. The golden / silver goal were not popular and didn't last long before the reverted to old format of 2 x 15 minutes extra time followed by a penalty shoot out if there was still no winner.

Ich hatte nicht darüber nachgedacht, wie die Liga dadurch wettbewerbsfähiger werden kann, dass eine schwächere Mannschaft auch ohne Sieg noch einen Punkt gegen eine stärkere Mannschaft einfahren kann. On the QI quiz show which appears on the BBC in the UK (and maybe also in the USA?) they revealed that apparently the name 'soccer' actually originally came from England around 1890). Back then rugby (properly called 'rugby football') and football / soccer (properly called 'association football') were younger they were often colloquially called 'rugger' and 'soccer'. I totally get what you are saying. I would definitely make a broad generalization that part of American culture is a “win vs lose” mentality. There is a mentality that there is no other option than winning. If you don’t win, you lose. It’s like we sometimes say “2nd place is just first loser” or “if you’re not first, you’re last.” We love to turn everything into a competition, we got the best test score, who ran to the car to drive in the front seat, who ate the fastest, etc. It’s a strange phenomena built into our psyche and who we are! (Again, this is a broad over generalization) But then again, as so many people have replied in the comments, technically, NFL games can end in ties also. 🤷🏻‍♂️ It’s just something for us to observe in this country and to learn from! It is an interesting set up and we enjoy seeing it 😊

Sounds like a tournament may be more satisfying for us since we always want to see a winner and a loser haha

Unfortunately we haven't been to another yet. It wasn't too long after this that COVID happened and dashed those hopes of going to another. Would LOVE to go to an FC Bayern game! Hear great things about that experience! I (Donnie) am certainly an Aggie! I went to the first matchup between Florida and A&M when we moved to the SEC in 2012. Was a tough "welcome" into the SEC for us 😂 Aubrey is a Baylor university graduate which is in Waco, Texas, about an hour and a half north of A&M. 😊

@@PassportTwo I actually went to a high school in Boerne, Texas, as an exchange student. And was always disappointed by the lack of group-cheers on friday nights - compared to German soccer games. I had a huge appreciation for all people in Band, Cheerleader and Royalettes though. To me as a foreigner they seemed to be much more committed than most of the fans in the bleachers ;-) Btw: My host dad attended A&M, too.

@@PassportTwo I went to Texas A & M from 1981 to 1983 but for personal reasons couldn't finish college. I loved my time in CS-B, made great friends, iis my unforgetable time of life. Now I watch your channel because I married a german citizen and my older son is already living in Freiburg Im Breisgau (loved that video of yours) and hopefully this year my youngest son is leavingto Germany too. My wife and I will be moving to Germany in a few months, your videos are fun and informative. Keep up the great work your are doing!

You're right. We realized this after the fact because I really only watch college football and catch an NFL game every now and then. I don't know if I have ever actually watched an NFL game end in a tie myself so I didn't even really realize that could happen. Thanks for pointing that out 😊

We can respect that perspective 😊 From my perspective, this would be true in all sports though where the defense's goal is to stop the opposing team from scoring. If they do their job well, then they shouldn't score and the offense should just have to score at least once and then they can win.

@@PassportTwo Yes, but as far as I know (I am no expert and rely on what others told me.), American Football and Basketball both have a lot of rules that limit what the defense can do, specifically to favor the offense and thus get scores up. Especially in Basketball, the defensive players are basically only allowed to be living obstacles, instead of active adversaries and accordingly those ridiculously high score numbers are basically only limited by how fast the offense can run back and forth between the two hoops. In soccer the defense can actively attack an offensive player and basically do everything in their power to take the ball away from them. It isn't just the rules though. The size of the playing field plays a role too. Not only does it take longer to get the ball from one end to the other on a bigger field, but also does the ball need to travel longer when being passed from one player to the other, giving the other team more time and space to intercept it. I guess that if Basketball would be played on a field as big as a Soccer field, the scores would be way lower too. In the end my point is just that Basketball and American Football are both sports that seem either tailor made, or refined over time to deliver those high score numbers and fit into a modern TV format. That is what I meant when I said Soccer is more primitive.
