Ride along as @redwoodbusdriver, Steve Randall, shares his Grumman with me. I've flown a Grumman once before but it was so long ago that I had to check my logbook to make sure it was real. It's always fun to check out in new airplanes and in this video you'll learn some techniques that I use when I move to a new make / model.
I've got videos and podcasts coming week over week in 2020. Stay tuned to the Facebook page for all the updates and for more information on The Finer Points visit our website -

Redwood Bus Driver adopting the "I'm not flying, where do I put my arms?" posture. LOL!! Great video guys. So much to learn from your work.

That looks more like my normal base to final. I was taught to round off the base to final turn. There are some serious safety advantages to doing that. Your base to final turn isn't nearly as steep at low airspeed and in a high wing you have a great view of any traffic that might be on final. I had an old school CFI that had little safety tricks like that. Now, when I do my flight review with other CFI's, I often get puzzling looks. Another example is that I have never rotated on a normal takeoff. I was taught to put the nose in position and let the plane fly when it's ready. Once I put power in for the takeoff roll, I don't look at my airspeed indicator again until I'm off the ground.

Good tips. Dont do long base legs and on take off You feel it off the ground on take off, never force it.

I always loved LoPresti's Grummans, especially the Tiger. Sliding canopy, slippery airframe, torque tube controls, castering nosewheel......What's not to love.

My first recorded flight hour was in a Grumman Lynx my dad owned when I was growing up. I remember the canopy and him letting me handle the flight yoke to point the airplane at a water tower near our usual destination airport. I’d like to try one again now that I can appreciate it. Glad you got the chance to add a new airplane to your repertoire!

Airborne again-wooop!! Yea, my first few landing after almost 3 months away have been a little fast and a little off.... getting better but amazing how rusty you get after some time away, not terrible, just a little off!!!

That looks like a fun plane. My grandfather got his wings in a Grumman biplane in 1928.

Thanks Jason, I recently bought a Grumman Traveler and it has been a bit of a project. I am very excited to take her up for the first time, but I am researching her behaviors.

In my search for my first plane, the Tiger is one I'm interested in. Oh, just got out of the 172, competing my 4th hour and 12th landing. Im so excited to be on this journey and look forward to that "seat of the pants" feeling. Thanks for sharing. I'm paying close attention.

Tigers are such a treat. I can’t believe you hadn’t flown one. I love our 182, but I’m tempted to pickup a Yankee or Cheetah for when I don’t need the extra carry!

Good to practice those very low go arounds. That is my username for 2 years now. Practice them also with full flaps and turning to right side of runway. That is the difficult one, you practice go arounds while turning, low climbing slow flights, and flaps details too. Default Maneuver?? Good Exercise for good pilots only..

Next thing you know Jason, you're going to be getting a call from Texas to go fly another Grumman... With Bryan Turner! DON'T GO! 😁😂😋😱😜 You might end up talking to some people you don't want to, or worse, AOPA may take your name off the RU-vid Pilots list! 😜😋❤️

Plus its a real bait and switch. Bryan will TELL you’re going to be flying the Cirrus and then oddly it will be a Grumman... I’ve only fallen for that twice now...

Great video, just in time for me to transition to a new Fly Synthesis Texan 570 LSA from a Cessna 172, totally needed to learn the engine. the Rotax is way different from the Lycoming and the difference in glide ratio in combination with the aircraft is really different.

I loved Steve’s book. I’d also love to do some ferry flying and may get the chance to do so as I transition from mechanic to pilot. Know the engine, know where and when to look. BTW, I’m shopping for a Tiger right now.

Great video. I decided when I passed my PPL I was going to buy myself a Grumman. I think they are super cool. How was the caster steering?
@mikebeuselinck6138

Just curious: Is it standard local practice for that airport to cross over 35 in left traffic for 30? Or make a tighter pattern so base and final remain left of 35? Only asking because, for example, at KOAK runway 33 right pattern I was trained to stay right of runway 28R and keep a tight base and final (i.e. no crossing over 28R). That maintains separation in case there was traffic for 28R (or in your case 35).

Do you ever practice coming down over obstacles? It seems like I am always coming down over trees in my area. Kind of challenging to land near the numbers. My Poh says approach speed is 60 mph which is almost impossible to hit the numbers. I'm guessing the trees have grown since they set lines ?
@TheFinerPoints

Yes, I think that is great practice. There are some good videos with Paul about short field landings on my channel

I am happy to hear that cloth masks are acceptable. They let the sound get to the mic a lot better. Beautiful landings! I know I will be a little rusty with mine once I get behind the controls again. I love the idea of doing a go-around for the first approach.

Say why. Too nice and aerobatic feeling for you?? Too much visibility?? Too fast for 180 hp, Too good looking, scared of flying with canopy a bit opened. It is the king of the 180 hp class. LOL..
