Edited clip of Tyra banks show guest who had her supposed first haircut, she was 23. If I was marrying her I would at least want it in the wedding, and then some...
***** I remember when Sasha Grey went on here. She said they purposely dressed her in pretty pink clothes and did her hair and makeup like a 15 year old just to make it all more shocking Xx
...Are you not watching the video? There are multiple comments made upon individuals of varrying genders that ask, "When are you going to get a 'real' hairstyle," or, "Why aren't you donating your hair? There are other people in need," or, "You look so old with hair that long. No man's going to date you looking like your grandma." There's a lot of critiquing against long hair, a majority of it unjustified and bigoted.
Yes I NEED to braid that hair! I wonder if she walked around with it hanging down like that, or if she put it up. Also, if she did braid it, how long would it take?
She didn't look at all 40 to me. If anything she looked younger. People shouldn't judge others' ages from the length of their hair. Some people her age who have short hair can look older, too.
That isn't true. Everyone has a regional accent! Many young people have regional accents. I have heard them. There is no "standard" American accent. So that has nothing to do with it. I think its how she was dressed.
Anyone who speaks has an accent. Its just that some people's accents are more subtle than others . You don't have a good ear for accents, so to you everyone sounds the same- but if you listened closely enough you could hear the subtle differences. I could tell where a news anchor is from if I listened carefully enough. . Anyways, they are judging the girl on her appearance, not her accent.
James Bond The "standard" American IS a regional accent. It is a hybrid of the Kansas/California accents. Parts of Kansas and California. But it too, is an accent. The girl in the video was not judged older because of her accent. It was probably because how she was dressed. I have studied this because in high school I did a speech on regional American English and the faux notion of a non-accented American. In fact linguists say that regional accents are actually getting stronger, not weaker across America. I can still tell where someone is from even if they speak so-called "Standard American" because there are subtle differences. Even if someone learns their English from the TV and nothing else, we speak as the people around us speak and are influenced. If someone grows up in New York city and speaks "standard" you can still tell they are from New York because that influence will always be there with them. No one can remove their regional accent completely. I have heard many Actors adopt "standard American" and they still have their natural accents in the background. I am an actor as well. I have been in plays/film. What I notice is when people from different parts of the country adopt the "standard American", you can still hear their real accent in the background. Basically the standard American accent comes from the American Midwest- the heartland. Its a very flat, nasal accent that people like to think is "proper" Its nonsense.
Its everywhere because it spread from its regional location. The Southern accents are not dying. They are changing, but not dying. Regional accents are stronger today . Because in the past, Americans spoke more the same than they do now! You seem to know very little about what linguists are saying. Look up Northern City vowel shifts. This is still predominant. The 'General American" spread because it was predominant on TV. The Southern drawl is not because of lack of education. It was a copy of upper class 18th Century London speech. I bet you have an accent, and think yours is "Standard American". I thought mine was too, but its really not.
James Bond Believe it or not, there is more regional difference today. Yes, more people speak the General American accent (which is horrid, btw), but there is still more a gap. In the old days, most Americans spoke differently too, but it wasn't as diverse as you might think. I know because my grandparents and how they sounded . They had Southern accents, but they didn't sound terribly different than say, someone with a Midwestern accent or drawl or someone from the "standard broadcasting" of their Era. . They sounded like the old 1940s movies, but with a slight southern drawl to their voices. It was more of a subtle difference. Yet today, linguists are saying there is more difference and more new variants of accents emerging. Largely due to influx of non-English speaking immigrants and such.
I completely understand the feeling of anxiety when thinking of cutting your hair. I have always had long hair down to the middle of my back and cannot dream of cutting it short! It becomes a part of your identity...
fatma yildiz Don't compare yourself to others. I'll bet your hair would look great long. When you grow out from short, of course it looks thin at first, b/c it takes time for the hair from the top to join the rest at bob length. If you want it, be PATIENT! LOL
fatma yildiz Maybe you are in that tiny percentage of women who can't grow attractive long hair; I don't know. All I do know is that I've talked to many women who believed that about themselves, and many of them had been erroneously sold that idea. Anyway, all the best to you, Fatma!
I totally agree,or just taking it to butt length would have been a massive change for her but she would still have had mega long hair by anyone's standard
Tolani Akin I know, right! If the girl wants to cut her hair, that's all well and good, but Tyra seemed like she was being kind of criticizing and rude towards her and almost pressuring her to get her hair cut by saying it made her look older. If the girl likes her hair that long she should keep it!
Aleiaanimallover368 she came to Tyra for help and that's what she's going to get she said that her hair makes her seem older and that she wants it gone of course she's going be emotional from having it for so long and Tyra gives that little pushing that she needed.
I dont like this at all! It's kind of traumatic for this girl...the shouldn't cut her hair that short! Even Tyra's is longer now. My hair reaches my waist and I would've cryed, too...
Fr, that's way too short, plus to fix it they will have to cut it shorter. If they were going to cut her hair they could've at least had professional stylist cut and style it for her
"Do you want to look how old you are and who you are?" the lady asked her. That IS her! If she grew it for 23 years and is sad & scared to cut it, why did she? You shouldn't try to change who you are! If she wants to, she definitely should, but she seems kind of reluctant to get it cut... just sayin' :/ :)
Me being Tyra, seeing her struggle, I would've just kept it about at her butt and gave some layers. Just so she didn't feel so mach change but still look beautiful.
To dude calm down. She said it herself that she wanted to do it. She wanted to look younger. She wanted to look her age. She was scared because its change. Change is scary. No matter how big or small the change is there will always be even the slightest feeling of guilt or doubt or even sometimes regret. But after that change you get used to it and comfortable with it and that change becomes a day to day thing that you love. I know how it looks in the video. But she wanted to. She wanted to cut her hair and I'm sure she's happy that she did because its actually healthy to cut your hair. Her hair was probably mostly "dead".
i hate when someone gets they're hair cut and people say: aw why did you cut it? it was so long!: are you trying to guilt them?! that's so rude especially when its already done! don't make them regret it!
I had the world's worst haircut once. So here I am, crying in the mirror every time I saw my hair, and people were asking me, " My god, your hair was so nice. Why did you cut it?" Thanks! :/
I feel like she looks older with a bob.. She looks like a middle aged mom , they should've cut her hair but at least have her the decision of how long it should've been. They should have cut it maybe halfway down her back and if she wanted it shorter they hair dresser could've cut it shorter
Why does every male hair stylist feel a woman needs short hair? What are they Samson? Yes she needed to go shorter but not so extreme. She would have been just as beautiful with beach waves just below her shoulders. I worked in a salon for several years myself, so highlights would have been great too. Just to brighten up her look and let go of that brown a little. She's a beautiful girl, just needs to listen to a female stylist, or a man that is more sensitive to her needs and looks instead of trying to shock the audience.
Because most are homosexual men, and thus they try to make every WOMAN look like a man. Look at the ENTIRE fashion industry- women are told to be super skinny, taking away all of their beautiful, womanly curves to look BOYISH.
+Arlene S its more bc its modern fashion , i know some women think super long hair is pretty and good looking but it honestly looks like seaweed on your hair , not to be rude like you do you if YOU like it . Just saying , and like that why you dont see models with long hair
Victoria's Secret models tend to have longer hair. The avant garde type fashion is about art and shock and uniqueness. The more glamorous side encourages women to look feminine and excentuate female traits like long hair, curves, etc. Obviously if your hair is very thin and ill-looking then keeping it short might be better. If you still have hair like Nigella Lawson at 40, 50+ then why chop it all off? Each to their own.
Yep, I wasn't referring to hair as long as the lady in this video. I've never met anyone in real life with hair that long. I'd be scared of it ripping out if I sat on it! There's long and then there's loooooooong!
Ouch. I feel her pain. I had my hair even with my bum and I got it cut shoulder length. I was actually crying when I felt the "snip snip snip." I'm so glad that it wasn't in front of an audience. It really is just too much of an emotional experience to lose all of your hair like that in front of a giant audience.
The hypocrisy and blatant bullying in this (and all the audience clapping like drones) is astonishing. I wonder if anyone asked Tyra Banks about cutting off all that fake, blonde weave she's wearing! Banks must have been one of those vicious girls in high school and was lucky enough to find a bunch of producers with the same mentality to put her in the spotlight and pay her for it. Poor girl. Mean and awful!
true true she looks older but not that old if u hive her a proper makeover she would look better that tyra even with hair taller than her well to the length of her ankle samething
+Ashley Fair Just give her nicer clothes, maybe trim and layer her hair so it wasn't so wispy and uneven and she'd look cute as a button. There's absolutely noo need to get rid of your hair, especially when it's well taken care of. Long =/= dirty :/
I cried too when my 7 year long hair was cut short as hell. I relate to her so much. Like she said, it's like a security blanket. To me, my long hair is a shield. Few years later, I have my shield again :) I hope she felt better feeling younger though.
Long hair doesn't mean you look older, it actually makes you look younger in my opinion. And I think it's more attractive and beautiful. And I think that was way too short. What about at least waist length? But if she was having long hair for the reason that she was holding onto her insecurities, then I can understand why they cut it short.
It's not rude she doesn't look 23 even she said It herself yeah they shouldn't have laughed but the shock was expected she looks and dresses like an older women.
ClaryHerondale theMCRphan It's the weird part of RU-vid. Run while you still can, we're trapped here and we can never ever leave again! RUN I TELL YOU RUN!!!
I think what they did to this lovely girl was just cruel. Women can be so mean to other women if they dress or wear their hair differently. This was so sad.
I remember one of my favorite teachers in High school asked how old the class thought she was. Everyone said 43-46...she was 27. She looked like she wanted to cry, I felt so bad.
I hadn't cut my hair since 12 and I'm 25. My hair touches my ass and it is my pride and glory. I wash it three times a week and always take a large rat(my hair) out the drain. Most disgusting part. And yes, I'm a hippie.
This was wrong. The poor girl only did it because of what the public and her own FIANCE says. He should marry her for hER and not change her to what he prefers. She was pressured, insulted. Maybe tyra should butt out too because at least the girl had REAL hair.
All the guys I have been friends with over the years all tell me they love long hair. And they don't date girls with short hair. Now I think short hair can be cute on the right person, but I think her hair was pretty and she just needed to cut it below her bottom. Hair and makeup and clothes is all she needed.
I really wonder how the girl is today. I doubt this wasn't traumatizing to her. It's so unfair to blame the hair while different clothes could have made a massive difference. And braid the hair or something to make a young but unique look. This makes me cringe so much. I have seen the result. The bob was ugly and made her way older.
Trya actually doesn't have really short hair under her wigs, her natural hair is a few inches past her shoulders. She did a segment on her show about that a few years ago. Don't assume someone's hair is short just because they wear wigs or weaves. Some woman like the versatility of weaves or wigs. Just put it on and go. Cut it, dye it, curl or straighten it & you don't even have to damage your own hair while you grow it. The girl came on the show herself saying she wanted something different, even though she was nervous. America didn't force her to go on the show or to change, she wanted too. She put herself out there & got other people's opinions. That's what happens when you go on national television! I personally think it does make her look older, not 40, but older. I've seen woman & girls with long hair & it looks beautiful on them. It's thick, lush, & it has movement. However, I don't really think it does anything for her. Dirty is a harsh word for the guy to say, but it does look a bit scraggly & unkempt. Instead of proudly displaying it & making it work for her, it seems like even though she is displaying it it does the opposite, & she just hides behind it. I don't personally think they should have cut it into a bob, that is just so drastic. They could have easily cut a little more than half of it off, gave her some nice layers & she would have been good to go, but saying Trya is jealous or a bully for the lady's own decision is ridiculous. Honesty is not jealousy. Sometimes honesty hurts, but it doesn't make someone a bully. It's just hair, she can grow it back. Calm yourselves people. smh
I feel as though Tyra was so manipulative towards Mary. She couldn't have her not cut her hair because then it would defeat the whole purpose of her going on the show.
nawwww that was sad.. it was like watching a bully whispering in that young girls ear peer pressuring her to cut her hair in order to fit into a fashion society.. =/ that girl was humiliated on national TV. i say "that girl is beautiful in every way..with or without long hair. =) xo
My hair was pretty long, I'm a dude and not much people have long hair were I live so when I got it cut I just felt the same as everyone else which is quite annoying!
This is ridiculous if she likes her long hair she should keep it and NOT care if people think she is 40. That girl that was cutting her hair didn't even ask her if she wanted to do this. She just asked " Do you want to look 23? " She was crying because she wanted her long hair, but cared about what the people in the crowd thought about her. And your hair style doesent have to do anything with your age. Your never to old or young to have long or short hair. Style your hair ANY way you want!
My hair is right above my bottom and people at my school are like 'when are you going to cut your hair?' I'm like 'no' and I get it trimmed on the very ends is all but tye girls in my chorus class mess with each others hair and ask me if they can do my hair I'm like 'nah' I alwayz wear a headband and hair tie but not anymore and my friends really want to do my hair I have to scold them when they try to.
***** I dont see it as jealous, people have different opinions and some like short hair better. I have a friend who's hair is SO long I always tell her to get a hair cut because she looks so boring with long straight hair.
***** I also have hair past my waist. I so want to cut it cz em bored of it, but then i don't know what to do if i regret after cutting. Also my mom says that I've got lovely hair and wouldn't let me cut it.
A bit hypocritical of Tyra to be telling this girl that she has to cut her hair in order to look younger and be her age. For someone who's constantly trying to be a role model for people by saying everyone should embrace themselves for who they are including all their differences.
the reason they tell us we will look younger with short hair is to get us in the salons on a regular basis (MONEY) Most of us look younger with longer hair & I am living proof of it People usually think I'm twelve to fifteen years younger then I am
Yanno... Her hair had never been cut except for her bangs. Her hair was a bit uneven. However, she didn't have to have it all drastically cut off. Get it evened out maybe to her hips and a good wash and conditioning. That is what she needed. The whack job that she endured was really too much for her psychologically. Little bits at a time is best. Maybe as time went on, she would feel better about possibly a shorter cut. Who says you have to cut it all off anyhow? I am currently growing mine back out. I refuse to listen to the tongue clickers who want me to cut it to my ears.
guys. the girl said herself that people confused her with being older than she is, and she wanted that to change, yes she was scared to cut her hair, who isn't but I think the outcome was great she looks beautiful with short hair, and she can finally feel confident about who she is
