A few weeks ago I had my very first helicopter flight training… It was awesome! Join me as I step into the world of rotor flying, attempt my first hover, and learn all about autorotation.
This is all new to me, and I’m eager to learn these new skills!

As a former military helicopter instructor I can honestly say as well that not many humans can do that within an hour. You have a natural talent and great aptitude for flight. Wonderful.

I've watched more than a few "first heli flight" videos, and even where the student is performing "less than optimally", they have all been very relaxed and easy-going in terms of attitude, but they are not at all hesitant to step in and assume control if need be. I have a feeling that that is pretty much a required attribute for an instructor. I must say, however, that they must be *quite* confident in their abilities to recover, and do so before the situation gets out of hand. Kudos to Pilot Bambi- that was an incredible performance for your first heli flight!

From a pilot's perspective, this video shows how valuable a great instructor can be. He was very low-key, positive, polite and relaxed and Bambi was as well 👌. Now some instructor's are so hands-on and stressed and the students pickup on that, and they start getting stressed. By the time your hour is over, both instructor and student need a stiff drink and massage to relax and get the knots out of your neck. This was a perfect lesson in training 👌. Low key and positive attitude. Great job Bambi 🙂👍

Last night I was noticing how few ladies were involved in a weekly RC forum that I watch and participate in with a steady group of 60- 100.. it appeared one young lady was joining us, but we were afraid that the chat was just a BOT on RU-vid chat🤔😕was awkward because we didn't want to scare her off.. there are so few ladies into model aviation out there, some individuals, some husband wife teams, but aviation is such an important character and discipline builder. Luckily in model aviation I am seeing more young ladies becoming involved in drones, planes, RC surface, etc.. & its awsome! To see young girls & ladies winning competitions is fantastic! I see even more aspiring and professional ladies sharing & engaging hobby and full scale experiences on RU-vid now! All this leads to more ladies feeling comfortable accessing the aviation fields! Keep the fire alive ladies!😀👍

Captain Zakaria This is the one thing that you will notice about anybody stepping out of a helicopter: the angle of the mouth is very close to the earlobes! And it will stay there for a while. Great job for a first time.

I flew an R44 a few months ago with an instructor. I am a boat/outboard technician, and i have had absolutely no training whatsoever. It was a gift my wonderful wife bought me. I went from never having been in a helicopter, to piloting one in 5 minutes. That is how good these instructors are. We rented an airspace (under 2500ft) over the southernmost tip of Norway. and i flew around there doing anything i wanted for 35 minutes, before returning to the airport and learning to hover. On the third try i managed to keep it still. I then managed to fly in a controlled manner where i wanted. (The cyclic stick is EXTREMELY sensitive. Try to sit in your chair, and lean your elbow on your thigh while pretending to hold the cyclic stick 30cm above. 1cm movement in your hand is too much). That was one of the best days of my life. Thank you European Helicopter Center. Your instructors are brilliant!

I'm impressed. I flew helicopters for 27 years. Other than one guy in Australia, I have never seen a first time helicopter pilot hover it safely within the first flight hour. That is awesome Bambi.

Would have been a different story in an R-22. Bigger=more stability. They say if you can fly an R-22, you can fly anything. I bet the R-66 is even easier.

Reminded me of my first time. My instructor told me that he would expect the coordination I showed after 8 to 10 h from students. We agreed that I had two things going for me: 1: I am a dentist and have very intricate hand eye coordination when using a 400.000 Rpm turbine drill to prep teeth and 2: I have been a drummer since my high school time and have hands and feet absolutely independent of each other! With a heli you don‘t fly as high and usually not that far as with a fixed wing, but the fun factor is awesome!

Your light touch on the cyclic is a great example to wannabe helo pilots like me! I'll always remember my fixed wing CFI reminding me to not grip the yoke to death, makes a huge difference in your ability to do fine and rapid corrective inputs, arguably most important in a helicopter.

Being able to hover a helicopter on the first try surely puts you right in the top tier of pilot skills. I think she might be the best natural pilots I've ever seen.

I felt like I was born with feathers for finger tips, but you blow me out of the water because I know if I try rotary, I'll get it, but I won't get it like you got it for at least the first several hours. This is my first time on this channel and I have to say, I enjoyed it. I'm very impressed with your flying, Bambi, if this is your first time in the pilot's seat, I'm even more impressed. Usually, first timers are a bundle of nerves but if you were nervous you hid it well. Think I'm going to leave a thumbs up, subscribe, and click on the bell, I'd love to see more of your 'adventures' in a rotor craft. Thank's for sharing. BTW, I feel the same as many other commenters, there should be more of the female persuasion in Helis and all flying craft, full and R/C, keep up the fun!

Hovering is all about anticipation. Knowing what to expect when you make a stick or cyclic movement and how that translates during a hover. You did real well for a first time flight.

You took to that a lot quicker than I did. Hovering is like juggling eggs on a unicycle while being tickled but once you get the hang of it you wonder why you found it tricky to begin with. Great video. 🚁👌

You got that right, lol.. hovering is like doing the "HOKIE-POKIE" dance moves, lots of little bumps to start moving to compensate, compensating for the input effect to stop, then again as it drifts..all while looking way out in front of the nose 75' or so for attitude/yaw reference, good sight picture for best reference, only using your peripheral vision to the sides to judge motion. This gives you the best "resolution" of movement along with best vestibular balance. Pilot Bambi's secret was probably that the nose of fixed wing forces one to look out there during roundout & flare, looking to the sides or down isn't good reference, head start to successful hovering! Hovering is like a never ending landing! Can't wait to see her take on float flying too someday!😎👍

@Christine Herrington observation flight..now I'm queasy thinking about orbit after dizzying orbit, looking down gives ya vertigo real quick if your body isn't used to flying, even experienced pilots have to manage it. Also worse when you are not feeling in control(as the passenger rather than the pilot, you are experiencing "uncommanded" sensations..

@Christine Herrington ya, that probably didn't help! "Nervous on a full stomach on the tilta-whirl girl" prank.. a good laugh for everyone if you left them holding the bag, but a little rude if so! If they were gonna make ya lose a perfectly good lunch, they should EACH owe you lunch @ least, or take you up again to do lazy-8's(fun turn, climbing roll&turn, on side @ highest point, then rollout still turning while diving out..repeat..two 180°turns😉) feel heavy, then light, perfectly safe when done right, kinda fun!

BTW, the video you are referring to is on "Pilot Bambi" channel..she and her significant other are an awsome team, they have a great channel.. and she is an inspiration to so many ladies, young and old, to just be open to opportunities that they wouldn't otherwise participate in.. (like a lady Bush pilot from Alaska who is a pilot of the newer models of the Goodyear Dirigible..)I'm not a fan of gender bias in careers, and look @ the women of VERY early aviation history.. even if only for recreation, flying is worth the effort..it makes you an even better and honest person. Kids can do it, they just have to wait to be of age to hold a licence, you have the advantage of being retired & able presumably to RESEARCH the process and pathes and "shop" YOUR path..life is too short to miss out on your dreams! BEST OF LUCK! Meanwhile I fly w/friends & fly RC bushplanes 😃

When I had my first helicopter lesson, I was sweating and forgetting to breathe. You seemed relaxed, waving your left hand and pointing, laughing and using the radio. Your glider time has given you an edge and the instructor is great, which makes a huge difference. Go for the helicopter license...you'll be able to fly anything and never be unemployed.

@Herman Spoot You are totally correct, if Bambi gets a Heli endorsement She will never be unemployed ever. With natural abilities to fly a Heli she could pick her type of Heli flying and name her price and they will be lining up at her door to hire her.

Great video of first flight lesson! A lot to do with the low touch/soft touch instructor who instills confidence and making the student less tense and continues to build that confidence throughout the flight.

This is impressive. I know how hard it is. I was on vacation a couple of weeks ago, and was bored, so I went to the local airport and took a helicopter lesson. It was in a R22 with the doors off. Some of the most fun I’ve had. I only flew .5, but we did a autorotation, and an off airport landing. By the end I could hover, but not as stable as this. I have around 60 hrs, so maybe that helped.

I'm a 47 year old man in the US. I've always wanted a career flying helicopters, but I couldn't join the regular military to get my start. I've been a laborer for 30 years and never could afford lessons. I chose to spend my extra money rescuing and caring for unwanted animals. My heart is full of love, but it's a dream I've had since I was 15. I'm so glad to see others get to live their dream! I'll keep just doing the purpose God gave me. Maybe I'll fly in my next life? I dunno. I've got a better job because I give my little ones a chance they never would have and they are so HAPPY!!!!!

Always wanted to learn flying a copter. I learned to land my dad's Cessna at age 11 just so I would be able to get down if something happened to him in flight. He had the 1st copter service at Lake Tahoe around 68-69. Did have a crash into the lake taking the Bell 3B1 to storage for the winter. Had just removed pontoons. Got out ok, but never flew again. Lost RPM on takeoff from the heliport off the pier at South Lake Tahoe. Still awesome memories before that

I had a lesson in one of these once, at the end of an hour we were just getting to 'this is a collective and this is what it does'. Goes to show what flying experience gives you on translation to helicopters. Nice vid.

Like many, I have more than 25 years in FW and when I asked my instructor "what is learning to hover a helicopter really like ?" he said - " put a marble, a golf ball, a pool ball, a baseball and a softball, on the floor. Then, get on hands and knees and push them all in a straight line with your nose" lol! I've never forgotten that analogy. Later he admitted that was an exaggeration and I could take away the softball. Great CFI, great "Bambi smile" = great video. Can't wait for more of these, safe skies Bambi !

Great job! A helicopter doesn’t exactly fly itself, but you almost made it look that way. I remember when I first tried helicopters in a PC flight sim. I was so occupied keeping a stable attitude that I had little control over position.

Comparing this to C.W. Lemoine's (Navy Jet pilot, also doing initial helicopter training vlogs) first few lessons. Maybe Bambi's a natural. Maybe the R44 is way more stable than the R22. I'd love to see them do a debrief video.

WOW, a natural! When I was getting left seat training as a crew chief on a jet ranger in the army there was a China hat on top of the cyclic stick to control landing light. The pilot had a half dollar coin and held it over the hat switch when he was teaching me how to hold position in a hover. He said if you have the top of the switch inside that circle you are good. When we practiced hovering he showed me that he stayed mostly within an inch of travel. I stunk first few times till I felt the movement and instinct kicked in. Pretty soon we flew nap of the earth at 60 knots and it was the most fun I ever had piloting. Helicopter flight is freedom but it comes at a price. Absolute diligence all the time! No lazy pilots last long.

I was Always a bit scared to transition from fixed wing to rotary winged aircraft, i was kinda worried about how much of a difference there would be plus, i was comfortable with moving flight and stationary flight did seem to be a little unnatural to me. but after watching your videos Pilot Bambi, i found my confidence returned and i am about to begin Helicopter flight training here in Australia.. Awesome videos, thank you for all your efforts, taking the time to record, edit and post them, we really do appreciate your hard work...Keep the videos coming..

Pilot Bambi, I'm planning on my Ultimate Discovery flight in R44 for my birthday next Thursday, and I've been watching as many R44 lessons videos as possible, but I must say, I avoided your video yesterday, it was longer than most, and Pilot Bambi kinda threw me (oh the irony from someone named Fox, right?) But it popped up again as number one video for my search, and I'll be honest, your video is by FAR best I've seen, I even felt the tension, the joy, the struggles and the successes, very nicely done, I'll be watching it several more times before next Thursday!!!

I started flying the R22 in 1985 out of Helistream at John Wayne airport in OC, Ca. One thing you will never forget is your first required cross country flight. Back then I could rent the R22 for $100 per hour including fuel. Good luck and thanks for posting this video! I also have hours in the bell Jet Ranger and OMG, like a Lambo compared to a VW Ghia. I'm 61 now and only fly my drones. With fpv goggles it is as immersive as piloting a heli but much safer. Liked and subbed!

I’ve got 140hrs rotary (Australian CPL-H) And I must say that is some natural talent. Flew it amazingly, only little thing is I’d hold the cyclic abit higher up so you can press the PTT easier. But that is just me. The R44 Raven 2 is a great Heli, not having a carburetor makes it abit easier. As you don’t have to be paying attention to pulling carb heat., plus the power they have is great when it’s just 2-3 people. Can’t wait to see your future lessons!

One secrete in rotorcraft flight... is... keep your forearm on your leg... it helps take the pressure off of your arm from freewheeling... this way, baby movements are easier to accomplish.. I’ve flown fixed wing for over 46 years.. rotorcraft for 30... id rather loose power in a helicopter because I can auto into a parking spot...vs my twin needs a par 5 golf hole... if a road or airport isn’t available.. thanks for sharing...

A good point Robert! Makes small inputs more "gaurded" & precice while giving feedback as to where "average center" of inputs are, "trimming" your inputs (better than your whole arm including the shoulder making inputs! Think fingertip wrestling, not arm wrestling!😎)

Francis Conti - I’m reminded about when I was in training... my CFI flew with one finger while I was squeezing the cyclic with a white knuckled death grip... I love rotorcraft and the freedom. I flew a MD 600 recently (c-47 turbine)... from a hover... I pulled power to fly vertically to see what she had... I went through 12,000 and and thought better if it because I didn’t have 02. Rather impressive...

@@visarma9673 Lol, like an empty Huey, probably would have gotten to 15k & forgotten why you had giggles! You were right, you'd get squirrely before the rotor system! I got a serious wake up to hypoxia in the back of a C-172 @ only 10k because I was squatting and moving around awkwardly doing aerial surveying w/2 SLR film cameras..got confused..forgot most of experience in confusion till about 5000', my pilot was awsome even though I FROGGED up the day's work for his contract completely.. I learned an incredible lesson from that! Excess balancing&muscle strain, didn't think logically about cramps & confusion..& getting more uncomfortable/harder to keep balance..hypoxia markers for sure Items to keep in scan pattern!

Francis Conti do yourself a favor... go to the FAA and find out where the Hypoxia Testing Chamber is.. you even get a goofy blue card that states you went through the exercise. It’s very interesting... I barely made it Six minutes at 28,500 feet.. the most amazing part was... the nanosecond I received a burst of 02? I was back.. good lesson... I would encourage anyone to take a back up bottle of pure O2 with them. Smokers be advised that your hypoxic top of climb should be around 9,000 feet... everyone fly safe...

I just can’t trust an instructor that doesn’t wear a helmet during flight training. He’s not checking the 3 G’s, toppa tees or Dubya cees either. He said fuel gauge is good but for how long? An owwa or two?

Great job! Good sight picture attitude reference skills from fixed wing landing technique show through! If you ever take on floatplane flying, you will be equally successful! Great instructor too! I could sense no pressure and a lot of confidence building, the best! Helicopters are neat, kinda like riding a pogo stick or a unicycle.. all about balance!
