With my wife Dace we traveled to the other side of the map again and we are in Armenia, a country in the Caucasus region. Join us, we are going to walk its streets to see what happens and share it with you. Armenia is the 26th country that we show on the channel and it has received us with mild and cloudy weather.
Armenia is located in the Caucasus region, at the intersection of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. It is bordered by Turkey to the west, Georgia to the north, and Nagorno-Karabakh and the Republic of Azerbaijan to the south and east.
The streets of Yerevan support our first journeys but the country has an impressive natural beauty. From the majestic Caucasus Mountains to fertile valleys and beautiful lakes, the country offers a variety of landscapes. Mount Ararat, located in western Armenia, is a national symbol and one of the most recognized mountains in the region.
Armenia has a rich history dating back thousands of years. It is considered one of the oldest nations in the world and was the first country to adopt Christianity as its official religion in 301 AD. The history of Armenia is marked by various empires and conflicts, including the Armenian genocide perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire in 1915.
Armenian culture is rich and diverse, with a strong tradition in music, dance, literature, and visual arts. Armenian medieval architecture, with its ancient churches and monasteries, is an integral part of the country's cultural heritage.
Notable examples include the Echmiadzin Cathedral, considered the oldest Christian church in the world, and the Geghard Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
From what we are seeing, it is a country of medium density, although it is small, it has almost 3 million inhabitants, although, due to various historical factors, such as the Armenian genocide and the collapse of the Soviet Union, there is a significant Armenian diaspora throughout the world. world.
Armenian communities in countries such as the United States, France, Russia and Argentina have preserved their cultural identity and have contributed to the development of their host countries and add, in total, some 9 million descendants.
These days the country is being visited by many Russian tourists who, having other doors closed, decide to come here. It is very common to hear Russian among passers-by since, in addition, most of the Armenians are bilingual, and that allows us to communicate with them in a good way.
An issue that raises concern is the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, a long-standing dispute over the Nagorno-Karabakh region, over the past few days, negotiations and mediation efforts have been carried out by the international community, and between the presidents of both countries, to put an end to the dispute.
There is a halo of nostalgia in the atmosphere that surrounds us, it seems that Armenia has clung more than other countries to both the recent and distant past. It is a good country to visit for lovers of ancient history and the Soviet Union.
A tour of the supermarket and other shops have made us recognize certain products that we used to consume in Latvia but that European sanctions have removed from the shops. The prices are higher than we imagined, compared to Eastern Europe they are either the same or higher.
A different aesthetic to the one we are used to excites us. Traveling is hyper-living and we feel that here we will have a lot to discover. For now, the indecipherable alphabet, some features on the faces and peculiarities of the architecture, confirm it to us.
At night the rain has left, a good opportunity to choose a good restaurant and try the famous Armenian cuisine. We know that we have yet discovered little of the secrets of this culture.
