Thanks a lot Liam!! Glad to see you enjoying the OXI and having a happy sequencing time creating juicy tracks💜 That say, in this particular device Loopop’s video is pretty outdated. The ONE of 2023 has improved a lot and it’s a much better machine now. We recommend the tutorials made by Synthdad.
Excellent point on learning one sequencer to control everything. While the learning curve is steep, (maybe not for all), the device is very deep and in my opinion, the best sequencer out there. Agree that it's inspired me to hook it up to other gear that might have been collecting dust. It's also and fantastic companion to the iPad. And works great with DAWs to control VSTs as well.
I love my Oxi, but I went with the original color scheme because when I tried both, I found that the black-out square in the center of each of the RGB pads on the Black Edition made it considerably more difficult to see, at a glance what that pad was doing, by making it more difficult to see the color. It's difficult to explain, but when you look at these small pads, if there's a black square in the center and you're quickly trying to discern the color of the pad by looking only at the perimeter (especially while it's playing) it's MUCH harder. I think the black one looks fantastic, but for me, it was less functional for that reason. (And believe me, I LOVE black editions - I have a Grandmother Dark, Microcosm Black Edition, Strymon Big Sky Midnight, etc., etc. I really wanted this black Oxi, but in the store it was just so obvious that having the entire pad illuminated really lends itself to faster recognition/smoother workflow - at least for me.
For euororack its invaluable. I use the midi out to sequence a BitBox Micro and all the CV and gates end up getting used. Using midi for the micro means all its I/O is free for use. Really a great, great pairing! Programming generative drums, and setting up patterns with different probabilities in the arranger *chefs kiss*
Bought it because it was a very price competitive option when considering eurorack sequencers. And being external solves the cables hanging over the sequencer issue. Now I use it for pretty much everything. Especially like it in hybrid techno live setups since it very easy and fast to program (even faster when using all the randomization tools available). And there is so much stuff in it to explore that it will take a good while before you get bored.
The Deluge is a beast and has a fantastic sequencer. It’s my dream machine and worth every penny. I have the Polyend Play as well that goes with the Deluge
The new screen may help, but I moved to the Squarp Pyramid and Hapax with no regrets. Lots of control for a multi-hardware setup. I might feel differently if I was composing on a bus.
@@TheFlippertube I love Deluge sampling capabilities as well as sound design in general. It does everything I need and then some plus has no track limit, no sample limit and it’s midi features are greatly improved
I moved from the Deluge to the Hapax as well, but now the Deluge is open source and I am building the feature I always wanted the Deluge to have, myself! And I see lots of other people building stuff as well, so in a year from now expect the Deluge to have many more awesome features than it already has now.
I would love to see a video on you creating an entire song on the oxi one. I have one and it’s really cool, but I get stuck in a loop and can never figure out how to make it to the next section of a song. I’ve done most of my writing in a daw, so writing in a sequencer has been a challenge. Great vid!
I normally start with one pattern (a chord progression a melody and maybe a drumloop on different sequencers), then i save them in one slot each. I make some variations of the patterns and save them on different slots. When i have a bunch of patterns or ideas i can either: - Perform them live manually loading the patterns. - Put them in the arranger so the arranger does the job for me. In the arranger I can set infinite repetitions so i manually control how the arrangement progresses (like launching clips in Ableton) or i can set the number of repetitions so the arranger does it by itself fully automatic and I only tweak knobs in other machines.
I have the Oxi One and the Syntakt. I was also a DAW guy and like you, it was a challenge to go fully DAWless. I though it was limiting, but on the contrary, I think it pushes to be extremely creative to get interesting results. The way I compose on the Syntakt is that I start with one pattern, and then I sequence the same pattern by muting / unmuting tracks (Elektron song mode is fantastic with this, so easy to compose a song in this way). On the Oxi One it's a little bit more challenging but I apply the same principle.
Always a spicy mix coming from your many tutorials .. thanks for sinking your chops into this Oxi One .... allowing for countless juicy sound bites to rise to the surface ... cheers !
Great video, I love mine. So many features and they’re still adding to it. Very active development and support. Looking forward to more OXI One videos, there aren’t enough.
@@LiamKillen I have been very curious about the Hapax too, as it looks more intuitive to use. I tried to make a table comparing the two; welcome corrections. I'd say they have about an 80% overlap, with the ecach having some interesting tricks of its own. The Hapax does have an interesting way of stacking MIDI effects (like you can stack an Arp on an Arp on an Arp - no idea what that turns into but you can do it 🙂). docs.google.com/document/d/1etLnCeL0BIIc-4HeFqp3lRIB2nNKVJaVp3NsHARar3Q/edit?usp=sharing
Is it just me, or is it a bit...strange, how the more experienced and knowledgeable we become as musicians and tech operators, the more excited we get about 'randomness generators' aka, the device writes the tune for you?
I see where you're coming from! The cool thing with random generator is that it encourages us to come up with patterns that we just never would have otherwise, regardless of how much training we have.
That's why the best music comes from the 90s. Back then there was still inspiration and emotion in dance, house, trance music. If you now go to the disco (what's left of it), you will hear the same tune and computer-generated music all evening long..
The 303's primary appeal is its impossible sequencer that is mainly programmed by random chance, which has spawned entire genres and truly amazing musical ideas. Art does not have to be crafted by controlling every detail.
@@leewightman8619This Oxi capability differs from general random generation in that you can control the amount of randomness that occurs with each pass; so what you are probably referring to as the "sameness" of random generators that just keep spitting out unenjoyable randomness is now a thing of the past, as the Oxi and other sequencers can now do just enough randomness with every pass to keep things fresh, but still sound musical and in-the-pocket 🤙🌌
i just got a keystep 32, found someone selling it for $60 and i've wanted to try a keystep. Dude, I love it! They keys feel great compared to my Novation Launchkey Mini mk3 and my Akai MPK. I was considering the Akai MPK Plus 37 but probably just getting the keystep 37 instead.
this looks great and all but my question here is why not just use the digitakt for all the above and save some space for an fx unit or a 2nd synth in your setup? P.S. glad you're slowly sinking back into the dawless world ;)
The random generator is a big reason- the Oxi one is more fluid as a sequencer as well and there’s a bunch of other interesting modes that Elektron sequencers don’t have which I have yet to explore!
I wonder about gear specific functions and how easy/hard it is to have fe parameter locks triggered by the Oxi. That said having all the sequences in one device is very appealing
Not only parameter locks but modulation lanes that are completely independent from the note sequencer (independent length and speed). It gives you a lot of flexibility to modulate things that you don’t have on any elektron device.
Yep, in a way I do like the Oxi, especially the limited edition. But it's more for isolating synts for sound design session, or gettting a track going. But a 4 part sequencer is not enough to make it a center piece. I guess it all depends on your setup.
Thanks! Awesome video and the Hydrasynth sounds so good. Maybe it could replace my Blofeld some day. The same kind of aetherial sounds in my opinion. I just wanted to say that what makes me not get an Oxi (probably) is the fact that I have a Deluge. I feel like they are very close to each other sequencer-wise. I would love to learn more about the chord mode. It looks really good and there is none on the Deluge so I've been toying with the idea of getting Scaler for my ipad and using it with my dawless -setup.
@@LiamKillen yes same just different color way i believe and cost slightly more but looks cool there own website didn't have it but perfect circuit did idk
Each to his/her own but I really dont understand why anyone would go with this rather than use the native sequencer in a DAW like Ableton that provides all of this functionality and so much more without any of the headache of having to deal with hardware. Using Push I would say makes all of this equipment redundant.
This has been in my shopping cart for a minute... Having the polyend Play and T-1 torso i have been told this sequencer is even more intuitive... Great demo but for myself do i need another advanced sequencer or want one? Liam i think you have already cost me thousands since I have found your channel hahah... I need to stop... GAS levels maximized!!! But all jokes aside i have heard amazing things about the OXI... I wish they didn't option out of sending me one to demo...
Yes you can! You can harmonize other tracks to the input notes. Also there’s a new midi routing matrix that is available (as 4.0 beta) where you can modulate any internal parameter with midi notes or ccs!
I've been GASing for one of these and your videos really fueled this somewhat more 😀. I have a Digitone, Digitakt and Novation Peak (and Keystep) which I sequence from my Digitone. Do you think the Oxi would be a good fit for this setup? What MIDI box are you using? Great video!
interesting, Im just wondering, why you are using a keystep and an oxi, when a hydra synth and a digitakt could the job with their keyboard and sequencer on their own 🤔, the oxi just seems usefull for me for controlling modular gear. Isnt it redundant in this setup?
In this workflow all of the melodies live in the Oxi One which is sequencing the Hydrasynth, which doesn't have a sequencer. So yeah it almost seems redundant but it's actually not - instead of plugging in steps, I like to use the KeyStep sometimes to actually play in parts.
Oxi One is a good choice if you can't wait for the Sequentix Cirklon. There's a very long waiting list, and it's a lot more money, with the CV output board etc. Question: does Oxi One do Polyphonic MIDI Spread? (That's where live MIDI input gets routed to a specified number of monophonic MIDI or CV/Gate Out channels, by round robin, i.e. Voice Allocation.) It's a great feature for anyone wanting to play several monosynths as a polysynth, or to use Multitimbral mode in a rompler synth to make it sound organic and analogue.
Any issues with the hydra timing wise? I haven’t updated yet and always have to walk on egg shells to get sync or keep it in sync . 2.0 was supposed to fix some of those issues. This sequencer is interesting.👽✌️
@@LiamKillen ditto ! Glen Darcy loves complexity that’s why it’s all in fine numbers with stacked lists like the oberhiem matrix synth he still owns and uses today. It bugs me that the update requires offloading the banks and the reinstalling them I belive one at a time from the user bank? Their tutorials are boring and never get to the point quickly or just leave you scratching your head going …” really? “ but your set up seems very cool with this sequencer ! 👽✌️
@@LiamKillen ditto ! I’m constantly amazed at how many times I’ve pointed this out to them and they just say things like “your emails always make us laugh “ quote en quote. Glen has become quite a toad lately. I think their days are numbered as a company because they simply don’t comprehend how badly their customers want them to listen to constructive criticism. Super childish behavior. 👽✌️
I noticed that OXI has limited internal memory and no SD card. Can you download songs and arrangements into your computer, store them there and load it up for later?
@@LiamKillen To answer both our question, I actually read the manual, and there is an included app that allows you to download and save all your sequences in your computer/tablet/etc.
Liam how are you? Any chance you can give an advice: I have the poly play, and im looking new ways of creating, but im looking into the OxiOne the thing is that the oxi seems like a they have the similar things but I would love your opinion of the comparison of both and if with 1.4 on the play is it worth it to go after the oxi. I see the play as powerful on rhythm and sampling but not much with other instruments, mellody and harmony.
Hej man! Thanks so much for your amazing video. I am kind of new in the world of oxi one and thought (dumbly), that i could just plug some earphones on it and begin to work. Apparently I ll have to connect it with other gear hence my question. Being a OP-1 master, do you know how i could link the two and finally ear what i am doing on the ONE? Thanks a lot for your help ;)
Oh man...linking the OP-1 to the Oxi One... I actually think that midi + OP-1 is usually a very annoying + buggy combo, so i've just stayed away from it. That being said, there is def a way to do it - I just don't know yet! Sorry for the non answer lol
this is awesome, been thinking about getting an Oxi One, looks amazing, didnt think about linking my KS37 to it either, that could be really useful. Was it easy to connect the two? USB MIDI in on a single Oxi sequencer/channel?
I have both. Oxi One is portable, batterypowered with bluetooth. It has a great history of updates (sometimes several per week). Hapax is a stationery powerhouse with big screens, lots of midieffects and in/outs. They are similar, but has imo a different workflow. So the question is: what do you want from a sequencer?
OXI One is designed to help you compose fast and get in the mood as fast as possible. You don’t need to configure MIDI effects because they are part of the workflow! Furthermore, You can modulate any parameter with the internal LFOs , modulation lanes and now also map to external incoming ccs or midi notes!
I've seen many amazing sequencers come out lately, and this is definitely great but how much of it is G.A.S.? If you already own elektron gear or other sequencers is it worth the money and time or is one just updating to stay current?
Really good question- Elektron gear does work really well for sequencing for sure - there’s just way more sequencer modes on the Oxi one which are really interesting - it’s battery powered, 8 CV/gate outputs and the gate outputs can be configured as envelopes
i've had the Squid since release.... They share some of the same functions, but they are absolutely not in the same ballpark in terms of overall functionality and power; come on dude, the Squid can't even do basic pattern-chaining! To say nothing of the ability to have basslines seamlessly following changes in chord harmony.... Do a tiny bit of research, maybe? 🙄🌌
Hey, Liam! Have you tried some other mixers like Denon x1850, Pioneer DJM900nx2 or A9 because I think their effects section and the ability to hook the RMX 1000 on the send return are far superior compared to the Model 1.4
Great video and love the techno sounds ! It looks so good, but now I'm lost, should I get an Oxi One or a Polyend Play ? Plan to use it along with a DAW on iPad Pro and 2 external synths to make some melodic techno. Any idea ?
As I undestand Hydra and Digitakt are on dedicated midi channels and OXI out go straightforward to Digitakt ti MidiIn. But as far as I know Hydra is not multitimbral so you can use only one preset at the same time. Is it true?
@LiamKillen: Are there any synergies with OP-Z? For example could you build base sequences on OXI One and use performance effects from OP-Z? Do they work together wirelessly well over BLE (do they sync well and how is the latency for playing OP-Z instruments)? Any other thoughts on this combo? Thank you for amazing content
"....while having to learn other sequencers"..(showing Hydrasynth) - mate, if there is one thing Hydra is lacking, its a sequencer. I know you can play with lfo's to trigger particular semitone, but that's not proper sequencing. Btw Oxi is good, but I would look at Squarp Hapax.
@@LiamKillen I honestly think Hapax is the most complete sequencer out there for the entire studio packed with hardware. Especially modular. Plus, it has all those fancy tricks, midi modifiers, basically everything you need to record into it and use it as your studio centrepiece. I like Torso T1, love grid based sequencers like one on Polyend Play, ofc, would choose Elektron sequencer anytime, but Hapax is like, one to rule them all. Oxi has neat features though.
I have a quick question regarding the sequencer, and i apologize if this question has been asked before. Can each sequence be dedicated to a specific midi channel?
Can anyone help me understand the gear chain here? I'm wondering if I could use this sequencer with a few of my volcas but I'm not sure on the connection.
Liam i am looking for a software for windows where i can just record usb audio. I just want to be able to record each section, like say bassline, then hit quantize, then move on to another one like piano, then hit quantize and so on. Anything you can recommend? I am in the process of setting everything up again.. I got a yamaha mixer with usb audio out and got 2 roland boutiques, rx 11 drum machine and some other synths and a mic. I want to be able to just record one part into pc, quantize, then reocrd aborher part..etc..as everything is connected to mixer. I looked into reaper but someone told me it doesnt do the quantize. I dont want to be messing around with midi data. I just want to keep record each part over and over until I get it tbe way i want and hit quantize. Thought you might have the perfect answer for me. Thanks. Hope you had a nice christmas! 🎉
I cover that in this video - also with the Oxi One, but with software instruments- something you might want to consider! :-) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oCFRl52jzeE.html
We have focused on the number of creative features and tools that help you get inspired fast. Not in the number of tracks. I think there’s s where the magic of the OXI One is
You could buy one cirklon or two oxi ones….. cirklon definitely has tighter midi (less jittery) and 5 in/out din for super tight parallel midi. I guess it’s device has some nice stuff as well but not build on the best fundamentals. Tight midi should be the first thing to get right. Jitter is no swing or feel….. better have separate sequencers and E-RM multiclock to get the clocks tight and shifted to adjust for midi in to audio out latency differences. This machine is a toy next to a cirklon. Don’t say cirklons are hard to get….. I have bought 7 cirklons and only waited for 1 of them (3 years) no professional who takes himself serious would bother with a toy like oxi one. Many features but bad execution of the basic thing sending out midi in time parallel without jitter…… boy did I enjoy you talking like being in heaven whit your “go to” sequencer….
Constant updates, a developer who's engaged with the community unlike any I've seen, considering the team is less than five people, when you have big companies with updates drier than a desert, and an experience that you can't put a price tag on. It flat out blows any other sequencer on the market.
@@oxiinstruments Totally agree. I can understand that people who don't have any eurorack can find this expensive tho. But then again looking at the competition. Squarp Hapax is 1080,- eur. Cirklon 2 is 2082,- eur (and that's without the cv and gate outputs). Polyend play 719,- eur (no cv and gate outs). And all the cheaper sequencers don't even come close to the functionality Oxi one offers. Considering the value proposition compared to the price. Its gonna be a tough one to beat.
oxi one is a wind chime compared to a real sequencer like hapax. oxi one is for people who cant be arsed to write anything. try hapax if you want a real feature set and you actually give a crap about composing enough to write your own. theres lots of nifty midi functions and fx too. get a one if youre an empty headed hipster
@LiamKillen Hi! There are so many aspects and so many questions about the structure of this STEP SEQUENCER that no reviewer addresses, like they wouldn't even know what its main purpose is. They jump over its MAIN FUNCTION, like it wouldn't even exist, and they only talk about some secondary and mostly useless "capabilities" - like using it as a midi keyboard for playing notes and chords. I do not want to play piano on a 16X8 chess board! That's what pianos and midi keyboards are made for! This is a STEP SEQUENCER and its main purpose is to be used as a STEP SEQUENCER! All the other features are extras. And you should have started by describing its step sequencing capabilities. Not only you did not started with its step sequencing capabilities, but you completely ommited them. I would use this device as a step sequencer for my DAW. And my DAW will send the midi information to each of the desired midi devices through its midi tracks -> midi interface -> midi DIN cable -> midi device. These are the things that we need to know first. Things which you, ond other youtubers, forgot about. 1 - How is the timeline of a track (a track in a DAW) represented on this device's pads? Are there multiple ways in which this device can represent the timeline of a DAW's track?: - a single horizontal row on a single page? - a single horizontal row on multiple pages? - multiple horizontal rows on a single page? - multiple horizontal rows on multiple pages? 2 - How is one bar's worth of time (a bar on a track inside a DAW) spread over the pads of this device? Into how many smaller divisions/pads can 1 bar (a bar inside a DAW), be divided to? 16? 32? 64? 128? If it is 128 divisions/pads per bar, will 1 bar encompass all the pads on the entire grid/page (8 horizontal rows X 16 pads)? - that would be great! Or 1 bar will only use one horizantal row per page, and it will encompass 8 grid pages x 16 pads per page? Haw many pages are there? 3 - Is each horizontal row "hardwired" to a different midi channel? Can multiple tracks (on different midi channels) inside the DAW be controlled by this device at the same time (different horizontal rows triggering notes on different midi channels)? 4 - How many midi channels can this device use simultaneously? How?
I appreciate you reaching out about this however I simply don't have the time to address everything here. I would suggest hitting up a facebook group / server and asking these questions there. People will surely get back to you within a few hours.
@@LiamKillen That's why after noticing that a 18 minutes long video wasn't enough for you to explain its basic functions (nevertheless you "showed how to" play piano notes on its chess board-like surface) I decided not to subscribe to your channel and to hit "do not recommend channel".

@darkuniversesound 1 - Because I already watched a few long videos, and I'm yet to find a good explanation of the basic features and workflow of this device. RU-vid got cluttered with very poor quality "presentations" from unskilled people who might be better at doing other things than making youtube "reviews". Many lazy people trying to trick the life by doing nothing and hoping to earn their bread by posting poor quality videos on RU-vid. Manufacturers pay these "youtubers" to post positive "reviews" on RU-vid (or offer them those devices for free). All these makes it very difficult to find an honest and good quality presentation. 2 - Because this is the comments section designed to share our opinions about the quality and the content of the video! What is wrong with that? Did I make him sad and make him lose his hopes that he will become a successful RU-vidr? Maybe he is better at doing something else. Life is more difficult than that. Making a job that you're not good at can have many negative consequences - like keeping you from pursuing your real passions.
