You can do it, Jason, no photo etch, no decals, just a simple paint job, after a battle with assembly. You'll look forward to the multi media kits after this one, good luck with it.
Nice kit and great review Jason. The idea behind the release of the wildlife and birds range by Airfix was to get more people engaged in less run of the mill subjects and to appeal to a different target market (ladies, girls etc.). I quite like the idea behind it and it diversified the Airfix catalogue somewhat.
I think the reasoning behind the release is to diversify the scale modelling community and attract a different customer base (including women) than the buyers of military models. Airfix were probably inspired by the relative success of similar animal models in the US (by Aurora, I think) at end 60s/early 70s. As u said, painting is the big challenge. Hope to see the end product. Keep up the good work.
Nice to see something different for a change. Bachman did a whole USA bird range back in the days, so maybe Airfix wanted to jump in on that.. these Airfix birds were re-released by Gunze Sangyo in 1999. So maybe if you look on that producer you will find the robins cheaper..
I remember getting this as a Christmas present as a child and having the Eight years old's version of a WTF moment. I distinctly remember those. Wedge shaped leg joints. I also remember how surprisingly fun it turned out to be,and being rather more proud of it than my Grant tank. It may seem an odd thing to remember but since I'm a miniatures sculptor it's not as daft as it seems to remember shapes
Jason, there were Bullfinches and a Woodpecker too. I love Bullfinches, but you never see them these days. I don't think they respond well to modern agriculture.
Hi Jason. When you listed the typical model ranges in asking the question of why?, back then I can remember quite a few historical person figure kits. Henry VIII being one that I tried and failed miserably with. Possibly they were a salute and aspirational modellers challenge to the excellent ceramic versions of wildlife and figurines collectables that held a strong market revenue in those days? (David Winter,Lilliputian, Beswick, Border fine arts etc..). Whatever, I have never seen these before and would be interested interested to see what success you can achieve with your expertise.
I was a painter for David Winter, we were trained at the facility, then did the job from home. They would bring trays of their wares to our home, and we could paint as many, or few as we wanted, the finished ones were rated and payment made afterwards. Any replenishment of paints etc. were done from the Vans. Enjoyable.
