My friend Nicky was so proud to be half Irish & half Blackfeet, she had two bumper stickers, FBI: Full Blooded Indian and FBI: Full Blooded Irish. I laughed and told her she can't be full blooded of two things, but she said that's the magic of that combination. She passed away a few years ago, but your comment made me think of her. By the way, it is a very, very common cultural mix here, the Irish and the native people in the Western USA got along very, very well. And, btw, Butte MT is, by population percentage, the most Irish place in America. Both the native & non-native people here stand in solidarity with Ireland too, btw, you all have some deep history with English speaking people trying to wipe you out, too.

I’m Choctaw from Louisiana and what’s interesting is most tribes east of the Mississippi River don’t have your traditional Reservation like the tribes out west. Most of the land here was claimed by the white man so we either lived with them or had to buy the land back for ourselves. Reservations were implemented to appease us. But it ended up doing a lot of harm as well. Cause the land is super poor and resource inefficient.

Even got to watch prayer time during sweat sessions inside an actual tee-pee with the Paiute tribe. I also grew up near DQU which years ago was a tribal college. Simply amazing people. I also know of an 18 year old kid that receives $800k a year from the tribe he's in via casino monies, yet his own siblings get nothing. As someone who was born, raised, and lived my entire 50 years here in the Flathead Valley I have many Native American friends. I have introduced this channel and series to several of them and they are all appreciative of the light you are shining on their way of life and struggles. I don't know about you Peter, but the fact that African Americans wanting us to make reparations to them, when there is not a single person alive today that was an actual slave owner is being politicized so much, while hardly anything is being said about the fact that we are STILL TO THIS DAY taking from Native Americans and foisting our "white man ways" upon them (the nicest way I could think of to put it) is something I consider a travesty of justice.

I remember watching your videos on the Alaskan videos and being amazed. I was hoping you were able to connect with Native Americans from the reservations they were forced onto, but only found one video (which I watched [About the cowboys] and it was awesome!). It made sense because Native Americans can be rightfully very wary and untrusting towards outsiders and their motives. But I was so glad to see this new video where you have visited a native american reservation, and am even happier to hear that you are making it a goal to learn more about native americans and their experiences and cultures in all of the US! I hope you can be welcomed into other reservations after seeing that your motives are pure :)

I am from the UK. Only recently, I learned that the natives have thousands of tribes. To say I was gobsmacked is an understatement. If anyone could point me in the right direction about books, which may give me more knowledge on this subject, I would be grateful. From the very little I have learnt, the American government has stitched the natives up. As they have done around the world. My maternal family is originally from Ireland. We are now English, because the English did exactly the same as America. I wish you all the very best and success in your endeavours.❤

I grew up with many off reservation native-americans in Montana. As a kid I knew they were different from white folk in certain aspects both historical and cultural aspects but we played together, hung out on the playground, in our yards and houses, fishing in the Bitterroot or partying together in the Montana State dorms during the cold winters, playing basketball, etc. I even had a Blackfoot girlfriend for a very short time in the spring of 1978. I came to know many aspects of what the real situations were on and off the res for many of them and sympathized. Even my great-grandfather was an Indian agent for the Flathead and Blackfeet in 1869/1870 (of which I know nothing negative and maybe a little positive, so much bad happened to these first americans over the years I reserve doubts on do-gooder stuff...) It always comes down to taking advantage of them from every angle possible and little by little they are losing even though they work to keep their heritage

Sad story. One thing you may want to clarify is you stated he was "drafted" into the service at 16. The draft was only applicable & the military accessible to those who had reached the age of 18. During that period there were young men under 18 who could join the military, but they had to get express permission from a parent ot guardian. There are also stories where they would lie about their age & come up with some kind of phoney documentation to support their claim of being 18. But no one under the age of 18 was ever drafted into service. And also, if they were 18 but had not yet graduated from high school then they couldn't be drafted either. In other words, if they had turned 18 but were in their senior year of high school, they weren't able to be drafted until the end of the school year. They weren't taking kids out of school.

Very interesting. I lived in SW Montana for 5 years and used to love going to the Pow Wow in Missoula. Yes, they let non-natives come watch. The whole tribal dynamic in the United States is bewildering. You have tribes like the Seminoles in Florida who have a huge number of businesspersons where the Blackfoot and Pine Ridge reservations are as poor as Appalachia. (Hint for another series, poor Appalachia folks) Various tribes have fared much differently depending on tribal culture, geography and education. But one thing that MUST happen is the US Government needs to give the Natives back their land and stop being landlords. No, the reservation does not belong to the Indians, the US Government owns it and keeps the Natives there like serfs.

We conquered it fair and square, and that thinking literally never stops. Someone always got there first and there’s only so far you can come back. Do we give it all back to the Siberians? The Africans? The problem with native tribes are the fact they rely so heavily on the government, and the ones that don’t learn to sustain themselves and statistically are much better off.
@RealJeep
@RealJeep Год назад
@@xaviercopeland2789 You're somewhat correct. To return it to a tribe one must first decide which tribe to return it to. The tribes were fighting, conquering, enslaving and occupying each other for centuries before Europeans arrived. The Cheyanne were feared by other tribes and displaced many other tribes. The Blackfoot nation did the same to its neighbors. However, the wider question remains; Why is the federal government acting as landlord to these reservations? I’m so enjoying this series on different reservations and the people who live there. There’s so much most Americans have only superficial (if any) knowledge of. As a kid, I remember looking over the landscape and thinking, “just 100 years ago there were completely different people here, they had different names for all these places, they spoke different languages and had different understanding and stories…and I never got the chance to meet them or hear them or know them.” I felt cheated. Not as cheated as they did obviously, but by their absence, and the attempted destruction of their culture and identity, we all lost. Even the one tribe that still lives in Iowa, the Meskwaki, are displaced people, and only managed to avoid being pushed to Oklahoma by gathering their resources and purchasing their land. (And they’re very clear about letting you know that!) So thank you for traveling to these people and helping to get their stories out. They aren’t the stories that we could have heard if our authorities and our own ancestors had treated them as we would want to be treated, but we need to know the truth and learn to look at the situation from their reality as well.
