I discuss a pocket fountain pen from Platinum. Quite an impressive pen!
I also failed to record video of my talk and didn't feel like putting my "set" back up so I took the lazy route and filmed it with my laptop. Going old school!

I enjoyed Richard Binder's book on Japanese pocket pens, which I have on Kindle. Naturally, I'm biased towards Pilot, but there are some amazing writing instruments out there!

I have not seen that book, so now I'll have to look for it. And, yes, the modern Pilot incarnation is a great pen.

I just got a 1970s platinum pocket pen and I LOVE it! I keep it in my purse and it’s great for jotting quick notes and it is a gold nib! Amazing little pen!

They're great pens. A modern equivalent is the Pilot E95s.

Not the first time I've been persuaded upon watching your video (just acquired a Platinum pocket pen in Japan on ebay, another locally i.e. U.S., and the Binder book on Kindle). It's wonderfully informative with an aesthetic sense I appreciate. Thanks ever so much..

Great to hear! These really are good pens. And the Binder book is very helpful!

Nice. I have several of these. All with gold nibs from 14kt to 23kt. I like them a lot, and for obvious reasons, the only pens I use posted. Reliable and fun little pens.

Very nice! This is a great form for a pen. And they all seem to be quite high quality pens!

Many thanks for another video - I have the Platinum Pocket Pen with the 22k nib, and it probably has the longest run of any pen in my own "Pens-in-Use" weekly list! Just great pens, which write beautifully.

Very nice! I'm quite impressed with this one. As the current fill is running down, I'm considering refilling it again.

My first impressions are very positive. Pocket pens are cool. And the sight of (B) for nib size is always right up my alley, especially so in a Japanese pen. As always, I’m most interested in the wetness/flow and smear tests. And to my eyes, this neat pocket Platinum did very well on both. Also, if the PG test is indeed ‘world famous’, Pierre has to thank you for that. 🙂 Cartridge-only sucks, though. A Pilot-style Con-40 would have been a nice bonus on this one. I have a combined total of five pocket pens from the Big Three of Japan. I think I ought to check out Anderson Pens again. They often have an array of old/vintage Japanese pocket pens for sale. You could pick up a pocket Sailor there, I’m sure. I have a pair I love much.

Pocket pens are great, and I use them a lot in the summer. And, yes, this Platinum did very well. I wasn't able to get converters to work on either of my vintage Japanese pocket pens. And, yes, Anderson pens does have a nice selection now. Also a lot on eBay right now.

A cool pen, glad you are enjoying it. Hah! Again it is kinda spooky to discover our tastes and interests coincide! I also picked up one of these Platinums the end of January-early February from Anderson Pens. This week I started working on my Instagram Post on the pen for next week. One post ahead of it for this weekend. @avee3138. I’ve had a Carbon Black cartridge in it since mid Feb and it is still writing. While compact, surprisingly un capped and posted it is the same length as a uncapped, posted Parker 61, Pelikan M200/M400 and a Pelikan M800 uncapped and not posted is about one inch shorter than the posted Platinum Pocket! Love the “moody dark by the light of the Warp Core retake.” Nice change of pace and attention grabber.

I have one of those, exactly the same in every respect except mine has a nice bouncy EF nib. Research found the model is PKB 2000, and it ran from 1964 to about 1975. Cartridge-only is a drawback, fortunately I have a few of those already from buying new Platinum pens. So I think it's a very nice vintage pen.
@WaskiSquirrel

Thank you! This helped a lot. I agree on the cartridge-only thing. But, like you, I've picked up a few Platinum cartridges over the years. Time to use them!

That's a nice pen! I have pretty much the same model just with a metal cap and an F nib. It's a good and reliable everyday writer! With a refilled platinum cartridge it writes about 15 A4 pages.

Thanks for the review. I have no problem using cartridges. I have a drawer full at work. At home I rarely touch them as I prefer bottled ink. Anyway, this is a nice pen and an interesting design. I like it.

Fair enough! I guess my only concern is a lack of empty Platinum cartridges. But, I suppose I'll just have to work through more of them.

There used to be two pocket models from Platinum - Platinum 300 ( stainless steel barrel and cap) and Platinum Pocket 18 which is the one in this video (And a pocket 22 with 22K Gold nib ) Its Sailor equivalent used to be Sailor 21.. I learnt the above while looking for an ‘affordable’ Pocket pen in the form of used/vintage pen ( since $150 for the new Pilot E95S is a little too much for me ).. All the vintage models were available for $50 - $60, but they’re unfortunately sold out here in India !

I had not heard of it by these names. Interesting! This one has the 14k gold nib. I'll check up on the Sailor so I can be more accurate when I do that one. Yes, I know the Pilot is too expensive, but I am really enjoying it. And, yes, a lot of these for sale right now. I'm quite happy with this vintage Platinum and the vintage Sailor.

I have a variation of that pen, the CON 70 won't fit but the old CON 40 squeeze converter fits nicely. The CON 50 might fit, but I'm having a hard time finding one. You can email me if you want the pictures.

@@WaskiSquirrel it was weird to me to. It also did come with an old platinum Squeeze Converter for me, but the bladder sprung a leak and I tried to fix it, but it was to no avail, the CON 40 somehow fit and I don't really know how or why. The original squeeze converter was said to have also been vintage but it held up well for 2 years of daily use while I wrote my drafts.

I'm not sure why it wouldn't fit. I have no problem. Is it possible it's a pen from a different brand, or has a part borrowed from another brand?

@@WaskiSquirrel definitely the exact same pen you have on this video, when I pop the cartridge in its almost the same total height as when you tried out the converter. Sticks out about 1/2 inch. All the original parts seem to be there. I'm really at a loss.

Good looking pen! Seems like, other than the one company that I'm trying to collect, I'm getting pretty drawn down the rabbit hole of vintage "ladies" or "vest" pens. Basically, pocket pens in general. Even to a (probably, from what I can find) New Diamond Pen Company "Midget" that, uncapped is about the same size as an international standard short ink cartridge. Not one I would regularly carry and use, but it's still in working condition (pretty easy, since it's an eyedropper filler.) Even has a TINY gold nib. For the price, about $12, I couldn't resist it. 😁 I get it about not liking a cartridge only pen. I have one, and though I like how it writes well enough, I'm not sure how often it'll be used, after the single cartridge it came with runs out. A converter would fit, but a converter is about double what I paid for the pen. Could justify the cost of a converter for my Parker 45, which I'd bought before I realised that it still has the original Aerometric type converter, but this is a Platinum Preppy. (Came with another pen, effectively making the Preppy a free pen, so...) I have enough trouble filling a pen already, with a converter or piston or even a vintage ink sac. If the pen you showed was cheap enough for me to get, I'd not turn it down, however. 😁 Thanks for sharing this!
@WaskiSquirrel
@WaskiSquirrel 3 года назад
Glad you enjoyed this! Yes, I can see a lot of value I'm the "ladies" pens. I have a few. The term has been modernized, but it does fit a specific need. I'm hoping to do some traveling soon, so I'll be pulling out a few of these pens. Wild to imagine a pen the size of an international short cartridge!

@@WaskiSquirrel And it's actually functional, with a bit of flex. And came with the original "Compliments of the Hotel Commodore" box. 😁 I don't always have a shirt with a pocket on, so I really like having at least one pen that I can just drop in my pocket is what got me into pocket size pens, and I actually found out that they're as functional as a bigger pen, usually.
